Was this play simply too smart to work?

They were never supposed to snap it. They were just trying to draw someone offside. Not the best play design, but it wasn't supposed to be as much of a trainwreck as it ended up.

If I remember correctly, they had to switch the guy receiving the snap for someone who hadn't practiced the play. He wasn't clear on what he was supposed to do. Not a good idea to put him out there, desu.
