I think it's because you need 11 players on the field

There are other plays in the play book that accomplish the same thing, they just have a different formation and different routes.

For instance you'll have the one receiver on the right run a go, and you'll slot the other two receiver on the other side and have them run a slant,curl, or out route, i.e two across the middle and one deep but you change it based on coverage.
