no i was basically the opposite.

A good friend of mine is a soccer ref, played from pre-k through his senior year. He's an absolute stoner and hrs authorized up to u-17 and can probably keep going with it if he wants. He just enjoys being around the sport and has a cavalier enough mindset that he doesn't care when parents are screaming at him to kill himself.

I knew two guys who started refereeing bottom division matches: one loved the game but was so shit it beggared belief, the other loved the game but got injured so much that he played like three games total through high school, and had to stop playing.

Not so sure. m8 used to ref 5 a side and got paid £40 for two 40 minute games every evening. Not bad considering you just stand on the touchline and call fouls.
