I honestly thing that baseball is get to be the most popular sport in America again. The controversy, politics, and concussions with kill the NFL. I think baseball will stop basketball because you don't have to be 6'9 and black to be good at it. Plus baseball is really the one sport that can have a white guy, black guy, latino guy, and asian guy all on the same team. You can be an ogre like Judge, or a fucking midget like Altuve and be good at baseball

Baseball became my favorite for 3 reasons:

1. Outcomes are always surprising
2. No time limit
3. Stats/numbers heavy

Most sports have very limited amounts of games, are timed, and care more about field strategy than actual play stats usually. Gave most other sports a try.

Hockey is a lot faster because of the ice but lacrosse has high scoring because goalkeeping is somehow harder.

Still, it's more boring than both hockey (which is ok, especially live) and soccer (which is simply retarded).
>>
>>77643171
I think the trades were made to free up playing time for their young players. Rosario looks like he'll be good. Don't know about that 1st basemen though. I think the core is pretty good in itself though. Once they get their pitching back, they'll be a good team.

>>
>>77643025

Sadly, I disagree.

Kids are becoming more and more conditioned to instant gratification. Yeah, we had TV and videogames and slow as shit internet in our day, but nothing like smartphones, tablets, and an internet where a vast amount of entertainment options are a click away.

Baseball will never, ever die, at least in our. It's survived more disruptive technological innovations (pundits of the day thought Americans would give up baseball for bicycle riding and car driving), but I think the game's pace is just too slow to convert enough Gen-Zers away from "faster paced" sports to the point where baseball is number one again.

it's already the most popular sport in the world by total attendance. MLB blows out the second highest-attended league in the world by fucking miles, and that's also a baseball league. given, they have far more games than other sports, but they also have legions of dedicated fans going to those games, some of them every fucking day. the diverseness of athlete types that can participate definitely helps too, in other sports you have to be in like 98th percentile of athletic conditioning in order to even play in a lower level league (and ninny league fags think the DH is bad because a smaller proportion of them are pretty fat). in what other sport can a total lardass be a feared offensive threat? handegg meatshields don't count

I'm not sure baseball has declined since the steroid era, it's just that other sports have risen into the media spotlight since
>>
>>77644380
i think the fact that baseball has so many games is a good sign, even - 162 games each team, and it still pulls fuckhueg attendance
very clearly, baseball at least in person is going nowhere for a very long time
even people who don't like the sport think it's a good time to head to a game and drink
of course they're the ones that end up the bandwagon tards with no idea what theyre talking about in the seat behind you
but dead games don't have even that

they have international tournaments that don't count as part of their league's attendance, as well as domestic tournaments that also don't count, so they play 2 games a week almost all the time, one mid-week and one on the weekend

clubs also have several 2 week breaks throughout the year where the best players have to report to their country's team. it's radically different to the way american sports are run, and you can't really compare any individual european country to the states so if you summed up the attendance from even just the top three leagues, it's already approaching baseball numbers
>>
>>77644478

fair enough, and soccer can indeed be extremely boring to watch on occasion, but so can baseball. if you're invested in the outcome as a fan of the sport though, then the whining of casual plebs doesn't mean much

although a 0-0 tie into the ninth can be extremely thrilling for a baseball fan, whereas a 0-0 soccer tie is usually a drag for everyone unless it was really contentious

I've been meaning to ask for a while now why field dimensions aren't standardized across all parks?

Considering fence height and distance directly affect the ability to hit home runs and home runs directly affect the game, how is it that some parks are easier to hit home runs in than others?
>>

No, there is something else to ask. Are eSports sports?

The answer is no.

>muh views

Lady Gaga concerts are also not sports in case you are wondering. Neither are Game of Thrones episodes.
>>
>>77645562
Because they don't necessarily give the home team an advantage. The visiting team can hit those same easy home runs.
>>
>>77645562
How? Everything from location of the park to the length and height of the walls determines what kind of hits do or don't happen.
>>
>>77645609
Yeah. But the home team has the option of building their team specifically to suit their park. That's one of the reasons that the red Sox took 86 years in between series wins. They couldn't win on the road in the playoffs.
>>
>>77645634
>That's one of the reasons that the red Sox took 86 years in between series wins.

Maybe, but that vanishes when they are on the road like in the Boston example.

The Rox could build their team to compete in those massive NL West parks but that would be their choice.

Leave the variety alone, it's awesome and adds to the game.
>>
>throwing parades for illegitimate home runs
>>
>>77645689
I agree about not having standard dimensions. It adds to the flavor of the game. It does cheapen certain personal achievements though. Inflated BA for right handed hitters in Boston or inflated HR stats in NY and Baltimore. Skewed pitching stats in LA, etc.
>>
>>77645734
there's so many factors that skew stats though. ballpark factors are constant and relatively easy to adjust for.
>>
>>77645734
Agreed, but there's enough stats discussion in baseball to account for stuff like that.

162 games in ballparks of identical dimensions would be a depressing downgrade from today's game.
>>
>>77645801
Wrong. I don't even know why you post here if you're going to be an idiot. Ballpark factors are almost impossible to take into account, and they greatly inflate a players stats and ego.

Even if field dimensions were exactly standardized, there would still be wildly varying park factors such as elevation, humidity, architecture of the stadium, etc. Coors is the best hitters park mostly just due to geography. Also the manner in which the park groundsmen condition the field affects hitting as well.

And besides, it has always been like this and it would be impossible to just get every team to reconstruct their ballpark into some standardied thing at once.
>>
>>77649672
that's why you'd have grandfather clauses. every new park build would have to conform to X dimensions

Build a new stadium and standardize. the only explanation for you not getting this is to be 12 years old or younger.

Boy, playing for the Royals would mean more times playing at Kaufman Stadium, a notable pitchers park, and less time at Coors field, a notable hitters park. they had one borderline elite year from Ubaldo. And it goes back to the fact that Coors is a launching pad that makes Arenado look elite.

I'm assuming you are still referring to useless statistics like OPS. His offense is about 20% above average when park adjusted. Combine that with the best 3B defense and he is easily an elite player.

a 3.6 xFIP and 3.66 SIERA is far from borderline elite in 2010, unless you define elite as like top 30 at the position or something

It depends. If multiple teams want to pay the contract, then maybe the Marlins can get farm system help. If it's only one team willing to pay, like only the Giants, then I don't see the Marlins getting much back.

two and only two options
A. grand slam. now its 5-6. bases empty 1 out
B. 2 run double. now its 3-6 runners on 2 nd and 3rd still 1 out

Which is more favorable?
>>
>>77650639
I think the opposite is true, that most people expect stanton to outperform his projections, since they are fairly conservative on him thanks to those times where has played through injuries (and missed time)

There's definitely a lot of teams that would line up to take on stanton's contracts. What they would get back in the way of prospects depends on how many teams exactly, but it definitely wouldn't be a salary dump. Even if there's only one team they could just threaten not to sell, the team has already been sold even with his contract on it

The "face" of every team in baseball. Teams not listed don't have enough fans or media attention to qualify, it's like how players need a certain number of games to qualify for titles.

Yankees: Aaron Judge
Red Sox: Mookie Betts
Rays: Evan Longoria
Blue Jays: Josh Donaldson
Orioles: Manny Machado

Tigers: Justin Verlander. Maybe Miggy among spics

Astros: "I'm pretty good"
Angels: Ricky Nolasco
Mariners: Felix Hernandez
Rangers: Yu darv- oh wait.

Nationals: Bryce Harper
Marlins: Derek Jeter
Mets; David Wright
Braves: Freddie Freeman
Phillies: They're so shit right now that despite being the only team in an east coast city they still fail to have a qualifying player

Cubs: Kyle Schwarber
Pirates: Cutch
Cardinals: Adam Wainwright

Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw
Rockies: Nolan Arenado
Diamondbacks: Paul Goldschmidt
Giants: Pocket full of Posies

do projection systems take injury susceptibility into account? I doubt he's value for his contract even if they do, and even if it's the case, you'd again have to have a weird amount of faith in them to base this kind of decision on something that's essentially trying to predict the future

man like two months ago everyone thought it would be insane to take on his contract, much less give up prospects for the entirety of it. I don't think this recent hot streak changes the big picture much considering there's almost 300 million still owed to a man with a big injury history. if there are multiple teams lining up to take it, why did no one claim him off waivers? I can only think of two reasons, that they would only negotiate a trade where miami eats part of it, or they were scared miami would revoke the waivers and they would lose their chance. either way, not claiming him works to their disadvantage if they feel secure in taking the entire contract, as the former is then irrelevant and the latter could be still be figured out in the off season without having to risk other teams getting in on the present opportunity

I find it a far-fetched proposition that any team would give up almost 300 mil in guaranteed money AND prospects for one man who's only played two full seasons in his career

>recent hot streak

He's been one of the best hitters in baseball since he was 21, it was only last year that he underperformed and even then we're still talking about an injured player who can hit about 15% above average

Obviously projection systems don't include "injury risk," there's no way you could predict that with data, you would need medical professionals to evaluate the player. However most obviously account for missed time in the past, such as the ones we have available to us like steamer. It's impossible to know what teams actually use however, they probably have their own private projection systems

Trading for Stanton now isn't much different than signing him in FA at this point. Maybe it would be a little bit lower than what the extension payed out because of the injuries and slump last year, but we're still definitely talking about a 250+ mil contract.

and even as one of the best hitters in the game since age 21, the contract has long been considered bad and a likely albatross. it takes him through his age 37 year. pujols is 37 now, and he averaged 155 games a season as the greatest righty bat of all time before signing with the angles. Stanton's amazing but I find it hard to believe anyone will take on his comparable contract at full price

again, why did no one claim him off waivers? why pay more what you had an opportunity to have for less?

That's not at all a comparable contract. Pujols is signed until age 41, Stanton until 37. The Stanton contract is a ton of money but you're paying for only 4 past-prime years of what is possibly the best non-Trout hitter in baseball when healthy. The Stanton contract is more like paying out the ass for a great player through his prime and a few years of decline, the Pujols contract was like paying out the ass to babysit a passed his prime HOFer until he's ready to retire.

No one would claim any player off of waivers unless they had a done-deal worked out prior to being placed on waivers with the organization, or you're trying to block other teams from trading him. If teams don't think the marlins are going to trade him then there'd be no reason to claim him at all. And they really have no reason to trade him at this point since

Stanton has never even had an OBP above .400 in his entire career. he's never even batted over .300 in his career. he's a relative strikeout machine with no speed. calling him the best non-trout hitter in baseball is an extreme stretch. pujols was on pace to match ruth's career WAR total and be a legitimate GOAT in the sport when he signed while Stanton is basically young Ryan Howard 2.0, except Ryan Howard actually slashed over .300/.400 one season and actually played several full ones in a row.

>Giancarlo Stanton cleared waivers, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, which removes one of the last mysteries of this particular saga. Would another team take the burden of Stanton’s entire salary, even if they didn’t even have to trade a single prospect? The answer is no, at least for now. There wasn’t one team out of 29 that would even take that chance.

I don't see why they'd need to make a deal beforehand, considering the only thing at stake is Stanton's entire salary, and any team claiming him would have to expect they would be taking it all
>>

What experts? Statistically, the NL West has the best team in baseball and two of the other top teams. I'm looking at "power rankings" and all the ones I'm looking at have 3/5th of the NL West in the top 7. You refuted nothing I've said and all you got is "muh power rankings" and even those you get btfo with.
