Human nature is geared towards rallying around objects and symbols that we revere. When someone intentionally disrespects that symbol (a proverbial sacred cow), the group that reveres said symbol (the flag and anthem in this case) becomes defensive and interprets it, usually correctly, as an insult to them and their identity. The song is about the flag still waving in the midst of a battle and the revolutionaries holding their ground and chasing out the Brits despite their odds of success. Its not telling the citizens to worship the military or even pro military, as the US military hadn't even existed at that point in time. Nobody said all human traits are good. And the problem with forcing nationalism and patriotism is that people don't set aside those greviances to make it work. Making someone stand for an athem, wear an armband, etc doesn't make them take pride in or think strongly of the the nation they felt terrible about about yesterday. Even in your post you agree that people riot, dodge and disagree. And it is incorrect that everyone worshipped FDR as an emperor. People held him in high regard as a leader but many were critical of his lengthy tenure and stated precisely that he is not a damn king. Also, nationalism in that time period again came as a result of people coming together on the damn battlefield. People back at home were not fucking huddling together and crying while preaching America first. The groups still had their divisions but the men who spilled blood together got to understand each other better which created a respect based nationalism. Back in the homestead during and post war, nationalism died as quickly as it built when people, particularly those that did not go out to the war, continued their divisive non-empathetic bullshit and did things like lynch black WWII vets returning home from battle while still in uniform.
