Who is the most dominant athlete ever in their chosen sport?
Don Bradman
Same answer that these threads always have

This is my first time on /sp/ except for the olympics, sorry if this is a common question, was just curious to see what the /sp/ chosen ones are.

Gretzky. The fella who rated Bradman above everyone else didn't consider hockey players in his study.

tl;dr
Gretzky Z-score (how much better you are, statistically, relative to other players in your sport): 4.9
Bradman: 4.4
>>77611712
the scores you've posted there are gretzky's score is relative to other forwards whereas bradman's relative to all other cricketers
that guy's blog has bradman with 5.0 when compared to just other batsmen which seems like a fairer comparison number to me
>>77611712
comparing Bradman to other batsmen gave him a 5.0
5.0 > 4.9
Bradman is still the undisputed GOAT

>the scores you've posted there are gretzky's score is relative to other forwards whereas bradman's relative to all other cricketers
I don't think it would make a difference, since defensemen are not known for piling up the points, and as he admitted, he doesn't know how to measure (statistically) the value of a defenseman. It's very much an eye-test thing. You can also measure player value through +/-.
I also think the 4.4 score is more accurate for Bradman. I don't follow cricket, but I assume players can affect things (for better or worse) defensively? Being a bad fielder, bowler, etc.
>>77611766
Cricket is more than just batting, though. You have to field and bowl. If Bradman was subpar defensively, that should be factored in.
>>77611825
>Cricket is more than just batting
not for a top order batsman
he didn't ever have to bowl and his fielding isn't important, you can just hide him in the field. its so negligible that anything but batting shouldn't be considered for bradman
>>77611812
to an extent, but cricket is a game with super specialised roles
top batsmen tend to not ever bowl at all and fielding seems like too woolly a discipline to really put a value on with current statistics, let alone held statistics from 100 year ago
i don't know jack about ice hockey, so i don't know if there's a decent comparison of what i'm talking about. but it might be like how this guy took ty cobb and didn't just look at his batting average, but also his pitching record and fielding record at the same time
as a nice little aside, the fielding team would often be considered the "attack" in cricket

I see.
The objective answer is Donald Bradman
>>77611825
you have maybe 1 player in a team that is expected to bat and bowl and no one expects them to be particularly great at either role

Tiger Woods was at one point twice as far in front of Mickelson (ranked number 2) than Mickelson was in front of the guy in last place on the world rankings. He lapped the field twice.
>>77611327
Don Brad"man" was a war dodger who statpadded against amateurs because all the good players died in WWII.
He also had Douglas Jardine's name ruined for eternity because he couldn't handle Harold Larwood's 125kph "chin music"

Star players get away with much more than your average NBA guy. I get the reasoning but still it's pretty unfair and inflates their stats/highlights.
