It's also heavily linked to reputation, ability and squad status. So yes, you could end up in examples where your veteran player cannot tutor a younger player because the younger player currently is a better player than the veteran... while IRL those veterans, even if not good enough, are often kept around for this very specific purpose.

Bold claim: Chelsea won't make top 3 this year. They'll battle for 4th with Tottenham and Liverpool.

In the end, the table will look like this:

1. City
2. Arsenal (they'll only get 2nd place once the league is done and dusted)
3. ManUtd (but the only team who'll briefly battle City for the title)
4. Liverpool
5. Chelsea
6. Tottenham

I'm sure there's more clever ways to approach it, but my aim is usually to clog up the middle of the field (1 DM, at least 2 hardworking CMs) and then find an effective front pair (either two strikers or an AMC and striker)
"defensive" is usually a safe mentality if you have a few fast players who can break, make sure you fiddle with players' instructions a little bit so that they aren't ALWAYS booting it long, and don't use too much closing down (esp. with defensive players) unless you think your opponents are complete garbage

not sure about FM17 but the slider FMs seem to keep passing length and through pass tendency apart
I figure it's something like that, shorter passes with the recipients running onto the balls
>>
>>77606938

but what would be the purpose of this system-wise? The two don't seem compatible.

isn't the purpose of shorter passing to mitigate risk and build an attack pragmatically?

and isn't passing into space the exact opposite? through balls into space is risky is it not?
>>
>>77607038
you're making the passes riskier compared to what they'd be if you only retained possession
but they might not be as risky as they would be if you didn't touch either instruction
or they might be riskier
and it probably depends on the players, formation, other tactical choices
>>
>>77607084

So do you think this would work?

Shorter passing, higher tempo, roam from positions, pass into space, on a defensive mentality and a flexible shape?

might be a bit slow (unless you want that) even with the higher tempo, try experimenting with higher/much higher tempo and/or defensive/counter
although it should still offer good opportunities for counterattacking
>>
>>77607271

Yeah, my problem is I have a very slow, weak team with no aerial ability so playing direct isn't going to work.

I'd like a defensive/counter mentality as I'm one of the smaller teams in the league (predicted 13th finish) so I don't want to get ran over either.

Basically what I'm looking for is a safe, quick ground passing counter attacking team who stay in their shape for the most part
>>
I've read through all the stuff in the pastebin, and it really made it obvious how many aspects of the game I wasn't aware of previously, especially with pair combinations. What's the best team to try all of this stuff out? I usually play small teams but they don't have the resources for you to really get the exact talent you need in each role. Or is it better to have weaker players in a more cohesive team strategy?
>>
>>77607463
>stay in their shape
>roam from positions
sounds risky
>>
>>77607468
I think you'll see the benefit of a system more with a shit team as you can know for certain it isn't the players ability pulling you through games. Try a lower ligue1 or serie a side

>>77607468
should I opt for a pressing defensive approach instead? I mean, I'm playing a 41212 narrow so I doubt I need the roaming from positions if I play a bit wider as I should always have a passing option. I could probably still keep my shape in that case.
>>
>>77607575
pressing disrupts shape
>>
>>77607468
tactics have to adapt to your players too so if you want to test an ideal tactic then pick a top team, but picking a low league team lets you try tactics for all levels of football as you progress through the league system.
Like for example lower league teams rely mostly on physical players and counter-attack (aka pacey niggers and tall strikers), and a team that has a chance at winning the league will have better results playing control or attacking football. This game is about finding a tactic that works and endlessly tweaking to adapt to your players and your opposition.

So in order to keep my shape I'll keep my pressing to sometimes to let my players decide (in theory a countering mentality should result in less pressing I think).

I'll go for higher tempo, short passing for the counter with plenty of support roles in midfield to offer passing options (I'll also have wingbacks on support for a wide option).

I'll also play slightly wider (risk should be mitigated on a counter mentality sitting slightly deeper I think) in order to create more vertical passing options into space in order to make up for players sticking to their shape instead of roaming. If I'm still too open I'll specify to stick to position.

In theory, does this sound ok to you?

What kind of attributes do I want for this system?

I'm thinking intelligent passers in midfield with at least decent workrate, marking, tackling and positioning with an intelligent striker with good OTB, AGI, Pace, Decisions, and composure.

Defence I would probably opt for workhorse fullbacks with ok crossing (can't be my main focus since no aerial threat at all, tallest striker is 5'11 with no hops) and solid defenders who have decent mentals so they don't just clear the ball retardedly.
>>
How do I defend against an aggressive 4-4-2 that crosses a lot? do so close the crosses down with my wingbacks? Or so I play narrow and deep to get compact?

I have my formation and system that I want to play, which is a 442 diamond.

What I'd like is quick, fluent, short ground passing for a counter by exploiting the mid and having the WBs support to stretch play.

I'm on counter - flexible with a higher tempo, shorter passing, play out of defence, and exploit the middle.

I'm in my very first game vs my under 23s and what I'm noticing is, despite these instructions, my players are hoofing it for my advanced forward (notably less since I switched him from a poacher to an AF at half time as I thought this was the reason why). Is this because of the tactical familiarity?

So when they become more familiar they'll start hoofing it less and less and play to my instructions (pass shorter, etc), or will they hoof it regardless due to the tactics not really defining what I think they are?
>>
>>77610338

Forgot to mention, I'm also using pass into space with the shorter passing

>>77610338
Train your match tactics hard for a while and it should improve, your team literally has no idea what they're doing right now.
>>
>>77610338
Your players aren't good so they struggle to pull off the shorter passing which is why they'll hoof it. Hoofing is way better than short passing in the lower leagues anyway so nothing wrong with that.
Besides you really shouldn't be trying to get your players to play the way you want right now. Just focus on winning no matter how they do it.
>>
Should I go for him?

He looks very decent compared to my current options.
>>
>>77610986
Offer trial.
>>
>>77610993

Never done it before, what does it do and how long should I do it for?
>>
>>77611021
The trialist will train with your team and be available for friendlies during their trial. What it actually does is reveal their attributes and pros and cons, like scouting them does and it's the best way of scouting free agents. I usually go for 2 or 3 weeks, though if they turn out to be worse than expected I cancel the trial before that.
>>
>>77610338
short pass and narrow tactic which exploitx the center needs a APM (AMC) not DLP, if you want it to be more effective just turn the 2 strikers into SS
>>
>>77611074

Are you saying get rid of the AM--A in favor of a APM and drop the DLP into a CM or something of the sort?
>>
Also, are regens hard to find?

I find one rather quickly, not sure if it was luck or not.

Is he any good?

Just noticed his current ability is better than any of my current defenders. He's 16. What the fuck.

How do I go about developing him into a good talent?
>>
>>77611293
Regens are easy to find since there's bunch of them generated each year. Though since you're at the start of the game they're rarer.
Also he is obviously very good for your team.
>>
>>77611293
To develop him just play him regularly. Also set his training to CB and maybe to improve specific attribute, though he has no clear flaws. You can also teach him prefered moves, but since he is CB there isn't much. Only one I train for mine is stays back at all time.
>>
>>77611178
yes, turn attacking mid role into advanced playmaker (attack)
if you still favor the Attacking mid then turn the DLP into roaming playmaker

I'm being way more proactive. I'm looking for signings that can bolster my squad. I know the style I want now and I'm just gona roll with it for better or worse.

My only problem right now is other teams are poaching my scouts.

>Your players aren't good so they struggle to pull off the shorter passing which is why they'll hoof it

But isn't the point of shorter passing that it's less risky and will therefore be better for teams with poor technique and vision, who struggle to keep possession? If you ask players to make fewer risky passes, the passing directness bar will lower.
>>
>>77612423
Actually you're probaly right.
>>
>>77612423
Because your players will be put under pressure and fuck up their short passing.
1 short pass is easier than 1 long ball, but 4-5 short passes aren't.

If they struggle with possession then they're likely going to be intercepted as they do their tiki taka.
With long ball you basically only have to rely on pacey wingers and a strong big forward.
This is perfect for the counter so your defenders can sit nice and deep.

Short passing is also generally done together with a high defensive line and you don't want an offside trap with shitty teams.
Short passing needs men forward for those triangles, long ball doesn't so you can have more men in the back

If you don't have pacey wingers then long ball becomes significantly less effective.
With good defenders you can go with possession football.
But with long ball you don't need composure so much, short passing you neeed.

If a big club wants your kid, 50% of next sale. Not profit, of next sale. Even if it means getting 1M less straight away. Else, they can fuck right off: they buy it for peanuts and pebbles and then sell them for 50 millions and basically, you're an idiot.

Several of the people at SI are definitely Arsenal fans because it's absolutely ridiculous how they always seem to win the premier league in the first few seasons and usually win at least one CL within the first 3 (I've seen them win 3 in a row).

Yes, all the English teams are overrated but it's actually a joke when it comes to Arsenal.

Not really, its Arsenal have a great youth/scouting set up and obviously that sort of thing is arguably a little OP in the game to help you develop small teams into world beaters so it helps Arsenal under AI to have a leg up over many other big teams and then once you throw in EPL money on top its only a matter of time before they can dominate.
>>
>>77617853
It's often linked to Brexit in my experience. The harsher it is, the more they thrive due to having an excellent youth system. However, Man Utd quickly develops into a powerhouse: unlike more complex setups, Mourinho's tactics are very easy to replicate for the AI, he doesn't take random dislikes of players like his IRL counterpart, Manure have buckets of money (sponsorship, EPLel TV rights, merchandising/marketing) and excellent rep which allows them to attract nearly every player they want. They always have a world-class team and bench.
>>
>>77617853
In my experience Arsenal always do extremely well and Chelsea turn to shit
>>
I'm save scumming the ever loving fuck out of the first game of a Champs League quarter against A.Madrid away from home, must've played it 10+ plus times because I can't accept having a 4+ goal deficit no matter what my tactics, team picked, opposition instructions or team talks; it always ends up with them getting 4 goals and me lucky to get 1. Greaseman turns my half a season unbeaten defense into mush, they won't hold line and my midfield runs straight into their players or boot it out of touch.

I just want a chance for the second leg, I'd take a 2 goal loss but this seems scripted as fuck, it's always the same result.

Does everyone here run all three tactics? I'm struggling in this season running 2. I'm always bad at this game, but I was looking solid at the start of the season, and with some injuries I've slowly crumpled.
>>
>>77620331
I ran only one during my climb from the lower divisions, but I kept training all three. Now I've used two, which are basically the same but one for countering against way better opposition, the other for home games/tighter matches. I also have a wingerless formation in case of mass injuries
>>
>>77620331
run one or two in preseason to max familiarity and then maybe add a third

although I've only used one for 3 seasons in a row in this save and I've won the league and got promoted twice in a row and I'm doing well again now.

If I'm running something stupid like 3331 I tend to have attacking and defensive/control versions of it
>>
I have a question about regens. I'm managing Derry City, which plays in the Irish Prem. In "Club Details", the nation of the club is Republic of Ireland.

However, the team is actually from N. Ireland, and all of my regens so far have ben from N. Ireland, with some having Irish as 2nd nationality.

According to what I've read, Ireland has a Level of Youth Rating of 2 1/2 stars and N. Ireland, only 2 stars.

So which country determines the potential ability of my regens?

>>77619808
Does that work?
>>
>>77620467
Why wouldn't it work?
It's a bit of an old image and I've changed a couple of things by now, but it's actually a great tactic.
As for regens I think they're determined by the nation of the club instead of the league they play in.
>>
damn, was looking forward to watching Wet Spam bring it home but they loaned out two good defenders, one of whom was their best player in the semi
>>
Since I've never left Europe on my saves:

Do you think there are any "broken" leagues in FM? I'm not necessarily talking about leagues, in which teams overperform for what they are or these small differences. (Although you can list some of those examples, if you want.)
I'm more thinking about leagues that have regulations with which the AI can't really cope.

Took an inevitable 4-1 loss with 5 yellows and won 4-2 at home, it's getting into real crunch time and I'm not having my team implode from something completely set up. Some results are scripted, no doubt. Used to savescum plenty and this is only the second time on a three season save, it robbed my captain for 13months the fixture after the window shut; can fuck off with that shit, still injured someone else even so just not my main man. It comes down to percentages and mathematics in every part of the processes of this game, certain things set up as a process . . . thats following a script.

The point of FM is trying (and failing) to simulate real life. If your team's star player gets injured, tough luck, you can't reload in real life.

At the end of the day it's you playing, and you should do whatever makes you happy, but it's still basically cheating.

4231 is perfectly playable in 17, with 2 inside forwards. From my experience the two IFs (together with the full backs maybe) are also the most important players in this formation.

As an aside, if you feel your IF's are too far forward or you want them to participate in defense you can play WM's instead and give them cut inside/dribble more/push forward instructions. From my experience WM's are almost strictly superior to IF's in fm17 (and IF's have cross less on default which is I think not very good). WM has been one of the best roles for years just because it's so customizable. You obviously won't really play a 4231 anymore (at east on the tactics screen) but the WM's will score tons of goals.

Did a bit of research and SI removed it to simplify the process and make general training have a greater impact.

Also, in terms of tutoring, if I have a tutor who is younger than the player being tutored will that effect anything? Also, lets say I want to tutor a player who has low composure, but has higher determination that the tutor, will their determination lower to match the tutors or will it remain the same?
>>
>>77632709
Unless SI changed something serious in the new games, you have to be 24 or older to tutor and you have to be 23 or younger to be tutored

Determination is the only visible stat that changes *directly* as a result of tutoring, but the personality changes (i.e. a tutee going from unambitious to model professional or something to match his tutor's personality) will aid in development and cause their attributes to rise more effectively. Regardless of composure or anything, the determination of your tutee generally shifts towards the determination of his tutor
>>
>>77632725

Wow, so if I have a model professional with less determination than a balanced personality, but I tutor them anyway the tutee will become more professional while losing determination?

What in teh fuck.
>>
>>77632737
Yeah man, i just did this but then his determination went back up due to off-field events. I'm not sure if it was linked or i just got lucky
>>
>>77632737
Determination isn't actually that important so you should do it anyway. Though model pros will likely have great detetermination.

They sure seem to be in a better state than they are in my save currently. That debt worries me, although we should get back-to-back promotions fairly easily, with the squad that we have.
>>
>>77635389
>They sure seem to be in a better state than they are in my save currently
I've piggybacked Slovenia for nearly a decade which made the rep ratings of ALL leagues in the nation raise (and hence money), and both the 1.SNL and 2.SNL are pro leagues with TV rights and prize money. The prize money more than doubled or something over the last 8 or 9 seasons.
>>
>>77635416
>2nd division
>That prize money

Dear god. How much does the winner of the first division get?
>>
>>77635517
2,106,000€. This is what it looked like in the 1. SNL when I started the save; at that point the winner of the 2. SNL earned 180K€. The whole idea was to follow a German-like system where the winner earns about twice as much as the last in the league. The amount of money each club receives as a result isn't that impressive which means that overall the wages haven't changed that much over a decade; not even for Maribor or Olimpija who due to several CL qualifications are filthy rich but don't use that money at all.

However, the global amount of money in the league is higher and there isn't a club facing financial issues as a result... despite not being any better now than they used to be. I mean, not at all. Olimpija and Maribor may qualify for the CL, but they hardly grab a few draws when they don't lose all six matches; forget about the clubs in the group stages of the EL, it's not even worth checking out.
>>
>>77635576
>>77635517
Now consider that the league was 30th or something in rep and we're currently 7th and were 6th. So compared to leagues with similar rep, the prize money is still far behind when it's not worse. It's still a better idea to play the Champions' League.

Scouts and DoF have separate spots, having the latter doesn't take away a spot for your scouts. They're quite useless however, unless you want them to take over certain tasks (keep in mind that that the AI is shit at handling anything whatsoever though).

Maybe they are in the biggest leagues, but I know there are not very legit when it comes to Slovenian league. Supposedly Olimpija players have much, much better wages than they have in FM.
>>
>>77637095
they used to be notorious for fucking up some leagues

I think it was russia where some players were just totally wrong, like strikers set as rbs
>>
How do I know what formation to play? I just changed my team philosophy to playing offensive and give young players a chance. Now I'm expected to at least win /bundes/.
>>
>>77637095
Back when I first started playing in Slovenia, a Slovenian told me that basically the Slovenian scouting was made by Maribor fanbois. For instance, they have amazing facilities and youth setup while they don't have that many amazing good youngsters. OTOH, Celje has quite a few good youngsters in the db.

That said, the Slovenian rules and especially the calendar were fucked up in FM15 anyway.
>>
>>77637182
Take a look at your players, what they do well, what they don't do well, and come up with something based on that.

going off of >>77636615, if i hire him as director of football and then don't allow him to do anything will that grant me his knowledge?
we're in the vanarama conference for reference
>>
>>77637211
That's probably true since the "official" Slovenian FM forum is full of salty Maribor plebs.
>>
>>77637182

First look at your players and put the best ones at their best positions. Figure out everyone else around them. If you have 3 good strikers play a formation with 3 strikers, if you have one good striker don't try to make a formation with two or more strikers work because it wont.

Keep in mind that the formation you set is essentially your formation when you dont have the ball. When you have the ball players will move around depending on their roles and instructions.

When it comes to philosophy it depends on the players and their skill level. You can't expect half amateurs to play a fluid highly creative and fast system when they can barely stop the ball at their feet.
>>
>>77637283
Yes, you will get his scouting knowledge either way, as long as he's at your club.
