My 4-4-1-1 pit in 85 crosses in my first league match. I'm fine with crossing, but how do I make it so I don't solely rely on it?

I don't want it to be my only avenue of approach.

My current tactic is on retain possession and work the ball into the box with mixed passing with a control mentality.

I used exploit flanks since it was a 532 and they had no width as their fbs tucked in.

Maybe I just crossed so much that game because the midfield was so congested with their 3 midfielders and 3 cbs, as well as their 2 forwards, which pressed defensively.

I mean, my action zones are literally like 34 33 33 right now, and I've been creating plenty while retaining possession and and dictating the tempo with a controlled mindset. I normally use either a SS, or AM-S if he is unavailable, to man mark their pivot to help with midfield numbers too.

I use my assman purely for set opposition player instruction during the beginning of the match. If it is an important match I will set them myself but on a random match I'll tend to allow it. Most of the time they do ok with mark tighter and show onto weaker foot the players I would as well.

I would stop that if I was you. Staff hiring in general is the easiest part of the game to figure out IMO and for scouts you really just need to look primarily on Judging player ability and then determination & adaptability. Also staff are extremely easy to negotiate a lower salary with. Low ball them and then slowly adjust their price upwards until they demand a finalize contract. Worst comes to worst you'll lose a good to great staff member that is fairly easily replaceable.

Give him striker buddies. If he's alone, it's just not working and the """help""" defender would just run at ball and get it while your TM fighting for position with his marker. If it's 2-3 forwards with TM in the middle, he can even become best scorer with support role. As a solo role TM hasn't worked since 2013.

So, I wasn't really creating much with my TM all game. I ended up going 1 down to 10 men and still couldn't score.

I subbed on a poacher late in the game and ended up getting 3 goals (I was dominating midfield with my 4-4-1-1 vs their 4-4-2 because one of my wingers I changed to wide playmaker and he came inside meaning I ended up having a 4v2 in midfield and eventually a 4v1 after the red)

Pic related is Velios' minutes (my target man), I'll post what happened after I dropped a target man for a poacher.

Also, I only have one tactic. Should I have other tactics to train? For example, if I start with my regular tactic but then I notice I can exploit the midfield and change to that mid game, would I have already wanted a preset tactic of that so it's being drilled in training also to gain familiarity? Or does it only matter if the formation changes?

It might be key to note; this game my TM didn't have a strike partner due to an injury to my SS. I had to run with the next best thing, which was a AM-S. Maybe that's why my TM struggled and my poacher thrived?

I'm brand new at the game and I have 10 injured players 2 games into the season. I have one striker that can play a SS role. One that can play Targetman, and one that can play Poacher. SS was injured, and I didn't think a poacher would work well with a targerman.

My BBM did well this game with my targetman as I told him to get forward to make up for it (which is why he had a ton of shots, which were either assisted or pre assisted by my TM)

It always has an impact, the tactical familiarity (granted you're playing FM17) will tell you how much of an impact it has.

If it's a punctual change due to circumstances, who gives a shit. If you're going to do that kind of change frequently, and if it has an impact on the overall setup of your team and you have free tactics slots, you might as well train it.

I don't know, it's different for every league. You go to your league, overview tab, and look at the rules. Although clubs are unlikely to be interested by an injured player.

Generally, the AI doesn't know better; hence why I told you to sack your Director of Football and keep all the responsibilities to yourself. Then, you don't know much better either, so at least read them and judge for yourself if they're worth listening to or not. 99.99% of the time, you should really do it yourself, even if it's with the help of a guide.

Whichever works at the time. Seriously. Between injuries, drops in form, player moral etc., you'll probably end up playing them all at different points of the season anyway.

My plan for every season is this:
>Have 2 gameplans, one attacking and one (slightly) defensive
>Start every game with the attacking one, drop to the defensive one when trying to keep a lead against a strong side
>Play players based on their suitability to the role I need

Everything that can go wrong, almost certainly will go wrong. Just focus on your tictacs for now.
Don't worry about a player's "best role" though, just pay attention to how well their attributes sync up with what you want them to do.

Watching the match back now and here are the common themes I'm seeing:

They used one of their wide players to tuck in to outnumber my midfield and just passed around them, and my midfielders chased them without a hope of ever getting it the ball back as they always had an outlet, and this left a lot of gaps to be exploited.

I had no real penetration and my transitions were very slow, allowing me to be pressed easily and their midfield to reorganize. Also, my target man lost the majority of his aerial duels (won 4 lost 14) and their CBs were to blame.

You could change RPM to CM(A) if you want someone to link better with your build-up play. Also using a DLF instead of TM would make it so that the wingers and midfielders have more options in the final third.

The defender always has an advantage on high balls, but if there are enough people around to catch the loose ball it might be a succesful tactic anyway. Just don't expect the TM to win most of his duels, or to be able to do much with the ball the times he does win.
Also, I believe TM is a role that is hardwired so that your team seeks that role more often (maybe than they should). Perhaps you could use another role there and still get the type of play your looking for by changing something else.

Don't think about these roles too much
It's just the game taking the attributes it thinks fits to the given role and comparing it to your player. It's just a guideline.

Scroll down, find the role you want to use, click on it, and see how high attributes the player has on the highlighted attributes. Chances are a player that's listed as b2b would be good as a cm too. If he need for example acceleration attribute and he doesn't have it you can just take that into account and maybe tweak your tictac in some way to cover for his lack of acceleration.

You could even put them on a different postion, i.e an attacker as a defender, and all that would happen is his decision attribute would be lowered.

You don't retrain for role, you have misunderstood that concept.

You could retrain for position if you like, that would give some advantage (his dec attribute wouldn't be lowered when he becomes green). But he's already green positioned in central attack

When you train him as a DLF he'll train the highlighted attributes more, and will in time maybe perform better in the role. But you can just as well pinpoint the attributes he's lacking if any and try to train them one by one. And if he plays as a DLF and actually uses for example more passes than he would as a poacher, he would improve more there naturally just by playing that way.

He's old now though and won't change so much anyway.

I always train all my CB as BPD, even though I'd never use the role. I want them to be comfortable with the ball and not hoof it, neither with good intentions as a BPD might or out of stress as a LD. I want them as close to 100% succesful passes as possible.
Similarly, I often train wing backs as CWB to get them well rounded, and CM as DLP as those attributes are some of the most important ones. Attackers often train as f9 wether I use that role or not.

Well my U19s are just a place holder. They're useless. In seven year, a Slovenian country with four divisions and over 150+ clubs generated exactly one Slovenian player that you could consider somewhat world class (pic related) and I didn't even notice him at all. The other world-class players that were generated in Slovenia all are from foreign countries; from my affiliations to be precise. I had boosted the youth rating from 78 to 87 mind you. The kids' league is there just because; I already had deleted the Reserves because they serve no purpose... to me, at least. Can't say that much for the other clubs.

You have wingers and a BBM, Pumping the Ball Into The Box bypasses them. There's no reason to stick to positions. A BWM isn't a holding midfielder, which means he will run left and right trying to get the ball, and considering you have a BBM who tends to roam about, you have no central midfield whatsoever. Which means CM(D) instead of BWM(D).

Hit Early Corsses makes sense only if you consistently have a player in the box to receive them. You have wingers, they can run, they will run and; if they're able to beat their marker (generally the opposition's FB) one on one, there's no reason to Hit Early Crosses.

There's also no such thing as a cookie-cutter tactic; only general guidelines you'll have to adapt to your squad.

There's a lot more to say, but in general it doesn't seem that you took what your team actually can do (which isn't the same as what FM thinks they can do) before slapping roles, duties and instructions.

Yes, else you won't play. You really just won't play any football at all if you consistently have to comply with that kind of crap. Holds true when you sign a player who wants to play in a given position with a given role and duty: remove that garbage promise, and if they don't like it, tell them to fuck off. It doesn't mean you can't build a team around a player who will play in a given position/role obviously.

You also have to consider that the average takes in account all your players. So you actually have to see if your first team players exhibit such issues or not.

But then it mostly depends of the player's age and Professionalism; their personality is a good indication of how they'll behave on and off the pitch; you'll obviously have to look at their coach report.
That's why I told you that Greek (or something) guy wasn't going to cut it: past 24, improvements are scarce and he wasn't going to play because even the youngsters were as good as he was. Without knowing his Personality, I guessed that it would've been complicated for him so he's out.

Despite Slovenia being 6th and having a reputation just below France, the mindset of the clubs in the country due to where they come from as well as their own terrible reputation works against them.

I had the same issue in a scenario db I made where I had made top Slovenian clubs+Triglav very rich: even if I made them billionaires, they wouldn't/couldn't spend that money on players. The above paragraph even shows that it isn't even a FFP issue: they can't spend their money, and I suspect reputation is the reason why.
