Apparently Fyfe was demanding a ridiculous amount (like $1.5m) which coincided with his very poor run of form, so the Saints decided to shift to Kelly.

Very much so. They have structured their salary cap to land one, and so if they don't get one, they are just going to overpay average players. The saints also lack that much vaunted "star power" which a Kelly or Martin would provide.

The thing is what does he get suspended for. Brown clearly had the ball, so he wasn't late. The action wasn't a dangerous one like as long, nor was it high contact. It's a rough tackle no doubt, but in a contact sport unfortunately things like that can happen. Shouldn't be suspended in my book. Hopefully Brown's ok.

Best way to tackle, yes. But you deprive the tacklee of any way to control themselves so the tackler has a duty of care to keep them safe.

Yes. It was the distinction from a fine to a suspension, and why the Cats said they didn't challenge.

The issue with the "pinning the arms" thing is by taking that into account, you are essentially punishing someone for a perfectly legitimate, even encouraged, tactic.

>>77480723
I agree, he likely will get a week, but I don't agree with it.
>>
Grundy's tackling technique was shit. Those specific tackles should be illegal. You can have just as effective tackles without hurting the opposition like he did.

No one has an issue with pinning the arms.
The tribunal has an issue with pinning the arms and having their head slam unprotected into the ground.
>>
>>77480785
The line between a good tackle and a 'dangerous" one is so slim. Grundy's technique was fine and if it was mostly shoulder into the turf, there would no no issue.

I honestly understand what you are saying, and I reckon you will be right come Monday, but I do not believe that a player should be suspended after a legitimate action which unfortunately resulted in a concussion.

Here cunts, BB could see he was about to cop it but staying put on the ground for as long as possible led to that final takedown by Grundy. It was definitely brutal that can't be denied, but had Ben at least made an attempt to drop kick the ball or something Brodie wouldn't have resorted to that. It can't really be helped.

The exact same argument could be made regarding bumping.

Bump them in the chest = fine. A few cm higher and getting them in the head = 5 week suspension.

>>
>>77480851
Right but the actual process between tackling and bumping is completely different. Bumping you are initiating contact and are obligated to avoid head high contact. In tackling, particularly the Grundy tackle, you are simple attempting to bring them to ground and dispossess them. With a hulking mass like Brown in particular, the action is far more complex.
>>
>>77480379
>>77480278
>>77480555
Hmm
>>
>>77480877
>Tackling you are initiating contact and are obligated to avoid slamming their head into the ground
It's much the same.
>>
>>77480897
My point is that it is far easier to avoid head high contact while bumping then in a tackle on a Centre Half Forward.
>>
>>77480905
On the contrary, a bump happens very quickly and there's no time to correct it. With a tackle you've got a lot of time to pull out/change what you're doing.
>>
>>77480893
had 200 for +33.5 so won 90. Not the greatest bet though.
>>
>>77480917
A bump does happen quickly, but with a compact and correct technique, and barring reckless engagement, it is easy to avoid high contact. On the tackle however, where a hulking figure is nearly impossible to bring down, it is far more difficult to 100% ensure that the head will not hit the turf.

Why do you need to take them to ground? If you have both of their arms pinned what does bringing them to ground achieve?
>>
>>77480987
Because if you take them to ground, you are more likely to get the free kick, and it makes it far harder for them to get a clean disposal out. You can't seriously find fault with a players decision to bring them to ground, that is a core part of the game.
>>
>>77481003
So does picking them up and turning them upsidedown. Surely most AFL players can lift >90kg.

Why don't they do that? Because it's dangerous. Same as bringing people to ground and not allowing them to brace themselves for impact.
>>
>>77481019
And that is reckless and deliberate endangerment of the player. Grundy had a legitimate action which didn't deliberately seek to injure the player. This is the key distinction.
>>
>>77481033
>Pinned both arms

Grundy started his tackle while he was only on his toes and using his left leg for support, Ben was still trying to run and break out of the tackle, probably trying to bring the ball down with him instead of attempting to dispose it some other way. It's a matter of stubbornness vs sheer strength.

This has not been confirmed, no idea where you got this. It was a single motion in grappling him and bring him to ground, which means it's a clear distinction from a sling tackle. Assuming this post >>77481154 is also you, then it is clear you are a North supporter and are thus biased in your decision.
