High scoring sports are always going to favour the favourite. Basketball and tennis are the best examples. Even if the overwhelming favourite fucks up within a match and concedes a lead, there's plenty of time for them to regain it. Football on the other hand is low scoring. We average less than 3 goals per game across Europe's top leagues which means there's opportunities for upsets. But because of the length of matches, underdog wins are rarely because of luck. They usually have to earn them with a great display, whether it be competent attacking or disciplined defending.
