Eric Snow's career is so amazing to me.

I mean, he was an awful player, but he was also the starting PG for two different finals teams. He did the exact same scam twice. Play with a fantastic ball-dominant initiator/scorer and be a good defensive guard and do the Dirty Work. And he was awful at it! He couldn't shoot! He is almost certainly the worst shooter to be a starter on a finals team, especially for a guard, and he did it twice with two different teams. It didn't work with AI and then the Cavs looked around and said "hmmmm you know what didn't work for the Sixers? Let's try that." It's fucking incredible. Absolute respect for Eric Snow.

Curry is an iffy defender who's only been good for 5 years - and those 5 seasons are great and I love him, but LeBron has been playing at that level for a decade at least. Shaq might have been a better player than Bron if he hadn't been crippled by his laziness and his inability to shoot free throws. And Hakeem, while he was great and I love him, was not as good a scorer or a passer or a shooter as LeBron, and while Hakeem was a defensive beast, LeBron is a pretty good defender himself.

You can look at per possession stats. You can look at FTA. We can look at usage. We can look at all those things. Even if you take away points from free throws, you're still going to find that LeBron scored more points per possession than Hakeem, and he also had a higher EFG% meaning that he did it more efficiently. You can go down and down the list through all of this, but the reality is, LeBron is better at scoring points than Hakeem was by a substantial amount. And he's better at most other things on offense as well.

So what we're left with is the idea that Hakeem's game is more skillful than LeBron's in some sense. And maybe that's true. Hakeem's post game was skillful as hell and he got his points in a very beautiful way. But to me, I don't think you can call Hakeem a better player on offense when LeBron is demonstrably better at scoring and everything else. Hakeem looked cooler when he was getting his points but he wasn't as good at it as LeBron. I don't see how you can say that he was better.

Hakeem was scoring at a high and efficient rate in the paint in an age where all defenses focused on was protecting the paint, keeping 3 players in the box, and having 2 players that're 6'10+ defending in the paint at all times.

LeBron lives and breaths transition scoring in spread defenses with 80% of his attempts 1 on 1 against one defender and no help defense. He's getting to the basket easier than anyone would ever get in the 80's-90's because the game has changed and it's more perimeter focused than paint/interior focused.

The level of skill required to score efficiently in the post at the rate Hakeem was doing was absolutely incredible. One, I agree that, in some broad-high level sense, the reason that Bron is more efficient than Hakeem is because he's better at shooting and transition. But... that's in itself significant.

Two, I agree that the style of defense has dramatically changed. At the same time, LeBron's usage is much higher than Hakeem's was. He's taking a lot more shots which usually results in decreased efficiency. So there are factors that cut against Bron as well.

Three, at the end of the day, like... the goal of offense is to score. We can make all kinds of statements about how you should score and what ways of scoring require the most skill and are the most beautiful and all of that. But I think that the most important measurement has to be how much you actually do score. And LeBron scores more and more efficiently than someone like Hakeem or someone like Bird. It is really hard for me to believe that it makes sense to say that someone is a better scorer when they're less productive. If you score more points (adjusting for usage and pace and all of those things), you're a better scorer. They don't give you points for style in the NBA, they just give you points for scoring.

Now, if the argument is just that the difference in defensive styles is so significant that we should massively discount all scoring post-hand check rule, that would be a different argument. But I don't think that's what you're saying because that would disqualify Durant. And I also don't think it's true.
