The Barca Academy has high standards regarding the attractiveness of their young athletes. Messi simply wasn't considered on the same level as his strapping teammates, and thus was forced to wear a mask to hide his Quasimodo-like features.

This only served to instil a burning desire to rise above his deformed dwarf appearence and become the greatest player of all time. He wanted to prove to the other swarthy, movie-star looking youngsters that he was just as worthy as them.

Some may call the treatment of Messi cruel, but without it he would never have developed into the player we see today.
