You want your player's to be able to act a perfect defensive diagonal every time you need it. That implies your players always are climbing together towards one of the outs of the field.

As soon the ball is long-passed through your defence, there is one defender who make a diagonal movement to cover the space and take the ball. Another defeder cover the position left empty from this movement, the terzino cover the next empty position, the nearest mid cover the terzino's empty position, and so on. Pratice and high IQ make it perfect.

From the most to the least important

1. Good team movement as soon as the ball is lost. It's mostly the forwards, and midfielders parts. The team needs to move as an undivisible unit

2. A good defensive midfield in front of them

3. Good coordination and placement. No offside mistakes, good coordination between the 2 CB in particular

4. Invidual 1 on 1 defensive ability

5. Individual ball playing ability

Defending the space instead of the man.
Manipulating space instead of rushing the ball.
Establishing agreements with your mates and sticking by them even if instinct says otherwise.
