And rather suitably, Phil Taylor wins his 16th Matchplay on D16 to join his 16 World titles. However, this final is not one that will be remembered for its competitiveness, as Peter Wright flopped yet again on the major stage against a player far better than he is.

Clownman lost the match before it even started, giving up his second walk-on advantage, dressing up as a fruit and crying on the stage before a dart was thrown. He was then immediately broken in the first leg by Pheel and despite getting into the match with a 101, lost the first session 3-2. A double tops 100 in the second session put him on course to at least get something back, but the cruellest of all finishes took it away from him: 81 on the bull for a 6-3 lead and won the second session 4-1. The "Scot" then decided to play; after missing 5 for 7-4 and a bull 82 from the Prowler, he went score crazy, with 11 scoring visits of 100+ in a 3 leg streak. It was an immediate surrender with under 200 scored after 4 visits to the board to go 9-6 down, and that practically ended the match there. Taylor's relentless scoring (104 average) and finishing (55%) were just too much for the sub-100 and 30% checking world number 3. Wright only managed two more legs before Philth hit that 32.

However, it is the post-match interview of Clown that will more than likely live in the memory. In an awful rambling that saw him break down in tears yet again, he admitted he doesn't deserve to be World #3 and firmly stuck himself in Taylor's pocket. He will surely slide down the rankings now after that meltdown.

This has been a very odd Matchplay: numerous seeds crashing out early, matches looking worse than they actually were, the emergence of Daryl Gurney as a proper player, and the one week revival of near-vintage Phil Taylor including the dismantling of a broken Michael van Gerwen. Thank fuck Pheel won't be on the Empress Ballroom stage again.
