Playoffs make money. If anything they should shorten the regular season and add a round.
They should just get rid of AL/NL divide so teams can have rational travel schedules then make it like NBA where half the league makes the playoffs.

just make rules about pitchers wasting time and if an inning is 1-2-3 outs in succession, do not go to commercial before the next inning half
