It's not a surname, just saying where he's from, state of Pernambuco.
There was also Juninho Paulista at the time.

>>77300628
This >>77300669, since we had so many players called Juninho at the time they would say the players first name on the diminutive and add his native state as a nickname. This is how Ronaldo became "Ronaldinho" for most of his carreer (there was already a Ronaldo in Brazil NT), and why Ronaldinho started to get called "Ronaldinho Gaúcho" (to not be confused with the other Ronaldinho, Gaúcho is how we call people from the Rio Grande do Sul, his native state).

Uhm, no Fiorentina is most definitely not an elite team. I lived in Italy from 1980 to 2004. Fiorentina has always had some good players - I particularly remember the Batistuta-Rui Costa tandem, and before that obviously Roberto Baggio and Dunga were strong players, and more recently they have had some talents like Jovetic, Luca Toni, Adrien Mutu, and lately Pepito Rossi, Cuadrado, and Bernardeschi.
That said, in the 24+ years that I was there, they didn't win a single scudetto and didn't win a single european or uefa cup. They won two coppe italia in 96 and 01, and also won a supercoppa italiana in 96. But that does not qualify as an elite team, they are the definition of a competitive middle of the pack team.
In Italy, the elite teams are Juventus (the national juggernaut), Milan (strong domestic side with a european pedigree), and Inter (strong domestic team and biggest rival of Juventus). In more recent times, Roma and Napoli have also emerged as highly competitive teams, although both of them have won little. These are the 5 elite teams of Italy. If you really want to stretch the definition, you might also add Lazio, but it's debatable.
Any Serie A team not called Juve, Milan, Inter, Roma, Napoli, and Lazio is not elite, and hasn't been elite for the past 30 years.
>>77300703

>>77300693
18 Premier League titles, 5 European Cups, and one of the most valuable and marketable brands in football make Liverpool more than elite.

I seriously doubt it, would have probably come 4th last year, but no way could they beat Champions League finalist Juventus.
Better than last year's Milan and Inter though. Prime Bati-Gol was something to behold. The only one I can remember that was more devastating was the first Ronaldo at Inter.

I just don't see how Lazio can be considered greater than Roma. I think that's just Lazio propaganda. Roma consistently ends up ahead of Lazio and has stronger economic power with Pallotta.

They won trophies in Europe that's how.
This crazy attacker.
Won the Scudetto with Verona, but not really an elite team.
>>77300941
Fiorentina frequently ended up in midtable through the 90s. They might be elite by today's standards but definitely not for 90s standards.
>>77300941
Anybody who says Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool is not elite is wrong.
Anybody who says 90's Fiorentina is elite is also wrong. Compare trophies won in the past 30 years and balance sheets for proof.
>>77300971
the thing is that he made it elite, he was the elite part in there, not the team
Napoli was a shitty team before Diego
>>77300947
Because that Napoli side improved and won trophies, thus becoming elite. Thinking Napoli was "Maradona + 10 players" for the entire time he was there is just ignorant.
>>77300993
That's the standard answer Laziali say. But the European trophies they won were a Coppa Uefa (now a Europa League) and a UEFA Super Cup. Roma consistently plays in the Champion's League and even played in a (lost) final.
Roma has also been relegated to serie B 1 time.
Lazio has been relegated to serie B a total of 11 times, which is probably unheard of among other elite teams.
>>77301019

This used to be a proper competition until relatively recently. The Super Cup wasn't a joke, either. UEFA Cup was a serious task and not just seen as a runner's up to CL spots.
CL qualification and expansion alterations changed that.

I agree, the Super Cup was the best European achievement of Lazio. And I would argue it's still a pretty prestigious cup, and very rarely goes to the winner of the Europa League and not the Champions League, making Lazio's 1-0 win over Manchester United even more impressive.
That said, the 11 relegations are, in my mind, enough to take away the 'elite status' for Lazio.
Although what this anon (>>77301092) says is correct. Chelsea was hardly a contender in the 90s, but anyone who doesn't consider Chelsea elite today would be wrong.
>>77301049
>But the European trophies they won were a Coppa Uefa (now a Europa League) and a UEFA Super Cup
UEFA Cup still had prestige back then
Super Cup is a top tier European trophy, especially when it's the underdog winning it against the CL winners like Lazio did vs United

>>77301259
Fair enough, but it's still the exception rather than the rule.
From 1985, the year Juventus and Everton didn't play, there have been 31 occasions of the European Supercup.
The Champions League Winner won 18 times. (58%). You're right, it's closer than I thought, but it's not a coin flip.
>>77301358
It's as close to a coin flip as you can get considering the difference in quality/money
>>77301377
We're not talking about the Intercontinental Cup. Rich clubs have won the UEFA Cup winners cup/UEFA Cup
>>77301265
What??
Parma is most definitely not elite and it's not even debatable.
They haven't won a single season in Serie A and they went completely bankrupt. Last year they played in Serie C (Lega Pro) and came second.
Two Uefa Cups in the 90's don't make a bankrupt Serie C team elite.
>>77301354

>>77301537
I believe that elite teams are elite because people still hold high regards even when they are in a bad phase (Milan, for instance). No one really cares about Florence now.
>>77301604

>>77301604

This guy
>>77298221
Henrik Larsson, Ally McCoist, Steven Gerrard, Ichiro, Mike Piazza.
>>77301595
Bull shit on the Batistuta part. Actually, it's all bull shit but I'm only addressing Bati right now.
Bati joined Fiorentina and played there from 1991-2000.
In these years, Fiorentina placed:
1991-92: 12th
92-93: 16th (out of 18)
93-94: Was in Serie B
94-95: 10th
95-96: 4th
96-97: 9th
97-98: 5th
98-99: 3rd
99-00: 7th
00-01: 9th
That is not the record of a domestic elite team. What years did they compete for the title during Batistuta's tenure, with the possible exceptions of '96 and '99?
As mentioned earlier, Fiorentina is a competitive middle of the pack team. Certainly their domestic record with Batistuta wouldn't demonstrate otherwise.

It's the other way around, back then top teams used to be a bunch of average hardworking plaayers mixed with some truly great ones, nowadays you can't have big success unless you have 11 world class players like Real and Barca
If current Atletico played in the late 90s they would have at least a CL and a couple league titles more. Simeone is just like Lippi, Capello, Ferguson, he can build a team from scrap and throw a couple great players in the mix
Remember Juve reached 3 consecutive CL finals with Pessotto, Torricelli, Tudor, etc, and only a handful of stars (Zidane, Del Piero, Inzaghi, Deschamps)
United were the same, and even fucking Real Madrid used to be like that
The super stacked teams of today started with Real, Milan, Chelsea in the early-mid 2000s

Club football is just a lot more focussed on the top leagues. In the early 90s top Brazilian teams might be legit better than Euro giants. Now they're joke-tier feeder clubs. In the early 2000s Celtic and Rangers matches were serious business, Ajax or PSV might sustain a solid team for several straight years. Now they're picked apart, and even the mid rated players go off to mid table Premiership clubs to try to get higher up the ladder.
