Kershaw maybe has a couple years left in him. If that disc is already fucked up again, it's only going to get worse. There is literally no cure for a herniated disc or a degenerative disc. The guy is probably already pumped so full of cortisone shots and percocet this season that he is getting diminishing returns on the relief. He's probably taking a break so he can comeback for the playoffs and the cortisone and opiates will be effective again.

It's an incredibly painful and demoralizing injury to live with.

Sucks to lose Strahm, he has a lot of promise and was rushed up out of necessity. Either way, he doesn't help us this year and Wood was shit 80% of the time and had to go.
It's a good trade for both teams. SD gets a solid reliever, possible starter in the future after they let him heal and develop a little longer. We get some much needed pitching help right away. They're not show-stopping additions, but anything's better than Al Alburquerque's sinker that doesn't sink and Travis Wood's shit that definitely stinks
