Edmonton didn't make any money so the city said "we're spending how many millions per year for what?" and that, much like all the other city circuit races that happened for like 3 years and disappeared, was that.
Same thing probably happened in Van, but they called it 'redevelopment priorities' or whatever when they cancelled it.
Montreal is pretty much cucked by F1, and not by some stupid Berniemagic contractshit - if F1 is in town at all in a year, Indycar has zero chance of being event #1. Here's Alex Tagliani in a Champ Car at Mont-Tremblant in 2007 for no reason at all:

What a race for /ourguys/... except for Hinch, fucking leaf.
Josef could conceivably win the championship. Dixon had his first run of bad luck this season finally, he still managed a top ten despite this because he's kind of a god.

Speaking of sub 1 minute lap times.

I present Portland International Raceway, a 1.9 mile road course.
There are some obstacles keeping Indycar from there, the facility needs upgrades, but the track is great yet.
Track record:
0:57.597 (Justin Wilson, RuSPORT, 2005, Champ Car)
>>
>>77175509

The biggest issues with Indycar going back to Portland are noise restrictions (Seriously, Formula E might be too loud to race there at present time) and the fact that a lot of the facilities would need to be trucked in and set up like a street course.

Juan got booted from his seat because he decided to get fat and slow his 3rd season in for Roger.
Josef placed 4th in the championship the same year with a much smaller team. He deserved that seat.
Helio is past his prime and given the sponsorship cut back, I'm not certain a championship win could save his Indycar career.

Some words from the designer of the 2018 aero which we'll see here in the near future as testing will be happening in 1 week.

Indycar has specific criteria they are checking for rather than putting thousands of test miles on these cars.

Color me doubtful.
Indycar has learned a lot from various incidents.

Crazy Silly Season Shit from Robin Miller.
http://www.racer.com/more/viewpoints/item/142417-miller-a-million-moving-parts
>As Silly Season starts, Hinch sits atop the Most Wanted list. At 30 the popular Canadian is a winner, a good qualifier and sponsor's dream. He's in his third season with Schmidt/Peterson Motorsports and it's his team, so to speak, if he wants it to be.
>It also possible that SPM could field three cars if Mikhail Aleshin returns or another paid driver surfaces.
>If Michael Andretti is persuaded by Chevrolet's checkbook to switch engine manufacturers, there will likely be two seats opening up...
Rossi is pretty attached to Honda and Sato will never cut that umbilical cord because it's the only reason he has a ride.
>Could Hinch return to Andretti?
>Rossi to Ganassi or SPM sounds logical. About the only sure thing for CGR in 2018 is that Dixon will be back, and will likely have NTT Data as his sponsor.
>Max CHilton keeps getting more comfortable at CGR, but there remains a chance he could help Trevor Carlin launch his IndyCar effort since his father, Grahame Chilton (CEO of Gallagher Insurance) is also the majority investor in Chilton Racing.
>Kanaan made his intentions clear last weekend. "I'm a free agent on August 1st, I probably won't be back with Chip but I still want to run IndyCars," said the 2013 Indy 500 winner.
>Pigot may be full time, loyal to ECR's team, Ed may step out of the car and do Indy only while Pigot goes full time

No matter what, the 2018 Paddock will look very different.
>>
>>77195049
Ed's finally realized he's shit? It'd be a shame if Sato didn't have a ride next year after winning the 500

I agree that's a bit of a weird sentiment.
He did have a really good season in 2013 when he won 3 times... then he went to SPM... and had middling results.

He may be a better driver than he lets on due to Sam's team being mid pack most of the time or in the case of the #7, near last.

>tfw driving a flip flop

Never mind that the HALO only solves the problem of large debris. Any small suspension piece could easily hit a drivers head.
I'm interested to see Indycar's solution because apparently they'll be once again taking the initiative in safety innovation.
F1's entire methodology to arrive at their solution has been really strange.
Who did they partner with to develop their aero screen/shield?
They drop it after one field test by one driver rather than getting the opinion of many?
Instead of engineering the problems out of the shield they proceed to go back the their first solution(Halo) which is not only hideous, but probably not helpful either. What if it deflects some smaller debris down into the cockpit?

Vettel was complaining of being dizzy and yet we never hear this issue from fighter pilots or LMP drivers, was it due to the buffeting?

It's all suspect.

Penske's Tim Cindric talks about how great their new driver, Josef Newgarden, is.
http://www.racer.com/indycar/item/142471-newgarden-has-shown-he-can-win-anywhere-cindric

In seriousness, the article is fluff on a slow news week, but Josef began in Indycar with Sarah Fisher-Hartman racing. SFH racing was a new team and would not be a strong contender for anything despite the helpful backing from Hartman Oil. Josef had to develop, set-up, and make changes alone with his one car team for 3 years between 2012-2014.
In 2015 SFH racing folded in to Ed Carpenter's team where Josef became Ed's teammate alongside Luca Filippe on road courses.
Josef would score two wins that year with this new, powerful team. One win at Barber and the other at Toronto, kind of mirrors this years results actually.
2016 was another strong year for Josef where he scored 1 dominant win at Iowa and finished 4th in the Championship. Hartman Oil pulled out due to international sanctions hurting his business and as a result Sarah's team was no more. Ed Carpenter Racing continues to run two cars.
Josef was signed to Team Penske this year, may seem like an easy choice, but the pay was actually a little better in 2016 at ECR and Josef values loyalty.
In 2017, Josef has won at both Barber and Toronto.

The kid is very good, he has made waves everywhere he has gone and this article gives him high praise.

Foyt has said neither driver in his current lineup has impressed him.
Not sure what the old codger wants out of his two shitbox cars. It wouldn't matter who they put in, Paul Tracy drove a one off race for AJ Foyt once and it was basically "undriveable" so AJ Foyt walked up to his engineer and said "Boy, I'd like to take that computer and smack you upside the head."

>Side impact protection has been significantly improved in a variety of ways, including the sidepod leading edge and induct duct joined with two bulkheads to create a proper crushable structure ahead of the radiator. The unitary construction is designed to absorb loads from all directions, and the structure is 8 to 10 inches wider at the driver’s hips.
>The top of the sidepod has been designed to exceed FIA side impact tests. The inlet duct, sidepod side and bottom have been constructed in hybrid carbon/dyneema fibers for improved penetration protection. Oil and water radiators have been moved forward, adding cushioning on the driver’s side.
>Simulations show the new car meets all of INDYCAR’s targets for not going airborne in spins at 90, 135 or 180 degrees yaw. The rear wing and front wing main plane are smaller and the centerline wicker from the nose of the car to the cockpit is tapered to provide protection against the car lifting when it spins.

In seriousness though, most safety parts of the car likely exceed FIA standards since those standards are usually measured by F1, which does not race on ovals and does not commonly see crashes recording over 100G's of force.
Innovation usually comes out of necessity.

Gross, I don't mind catching them race, but something about watching production cars, whose original purpose was to be sold to wealthy people, try to race each other with an artificial BoP isn't as scintillating as watching purpose built race cars pound around a track at much higher speeds.

Surely if the sanctioning body allowed many types of engines, but a hard HP cap, and many types of bodies, but a firm weight limit then manufacturers could develop cars to that spec and it would naturally find balance.

They used to just have a sliding air restrictor scale for displacement and weight that usually worked really well. The start of the fuckery was when Maserati wanted to race the MC12, which was totally fucking illegal. ACO pretty much told them to fuck off but the FIA decided to allow it with performance handicaps, then went "lel why not equalize everyone while we're at it to keep them from spending money".

GT3 used the same system to put multiple spec series in one race (they originally gave trophies for each manufacturer) and at some point became a huge meme and infected GT2/GTE because "dude this rear/front engine car totally can't compete with a mid-engine Ferrari even though the street cars are just as fast and they did so successfully for the past 10 years".

For the fun of making this related to IndyCar I may as well explain why rear mid-engine is better than front mid-engine in single seaters but doesn't really fucking matter in GT cars.

The short of which is picture related. Although these are a few years apart and the cars got a bit lower and wider in general, the big difference is that with the engine in front of the driver they have to be able to see over the engine, while with the engine behind the driver they can be sat -in front- of the engine with the highest parts behind their head, cutting down frontal area a ton. In a volume production car (fuck off Ford) At a more advanced point the engine in the back also allows a narrower nose for front aero but that came way down the line when formula car aerodynamics became really specialized and has some counterthinking with opening up the tunnels like the Nissan memecar.
>>
>>77316777
Oops

In a volume production car (fuck off Ford) the height of the car is mostly set by what kind of seating position an actual buyer will stomach so unless you're using a pigfat touring car like BMW or are racing A FUCKING VOLKSWAGEN like Porsche it's about the same anyways. Actually the 996 GT3s had less frontal area than the F430s because the Ferraris were so wide. So the only fundamental disadvantages become slightly less concentrated mass because the engine has to clear the driver's feet, and the presence of a driveshaft. With a front-mid engine car with a transaxle and some ducting freedom you can do pretty much whatever the fuck you want for weight distribution, the GT1 Corvettes with big fucking oil coolers in the back apparently had more rear weight percentage than an IndyCar. The new GTE aero regulations open up some areas that are difficult for certain cars to exploit (like Porsche had to move the engine forward just to use the allowed diffuser space) but that's because they've made them less production based.

Incidentally from an IndyCar safety standpoint some people want the seating position more upright to reduce back injuries, in which case maybe some sort of disgusting roadster wouldn't be at an automatic performance disadvantage.

https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/motor-sports/sam-schmidt-says-full-speed-ahead-for-new-indycar/
>“The idea is to break Arie’s record,” the Henderson team owner said in citing two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk’s four-lap qualifying record of 236.986 mph set in 1996.
Sam Schmidt believes that the car may challenge Arie's record which is a bit contrary to what Servia said the stated goal was.
With that said, breaking arie's record would be really easy today. If Indycars today had the kind of HP that was available to them in 1996, they would beat it by 5 mph.

Do you think the new car could in time beat Arie's record?

It's absolutely a lot more slippery.

I agree, that'd be neat to see. The drivers are absolutely on edge during qualifying and it's a miserable experience for them, but something incredible for us.
Bourdais' accident might not have been as severe in the new car given the larger crush zone on the sidepods to mitigate force away from the driver.
He may have still been injured, but it might have been a one race miss rather than a most of the season.

>It's absolutely a lot more slippery.
What would make you think that? The airbox is made up for by the sidepod inlets being fucking huge, losing the wheel pods is a drag increase, and none of the spec parts are going to be as well developed as the manufacturer ones were (the front wing is clearly a shitload worse than the Chevrolet one). Only things they have going for it are that the IRL knee jerked and didn't let them use all the underbody options starting in 2015 to slow the cars down and the new floor design means they don't need the domed skid. Maybe the new floor is a bit more efficient otherwise.

It's worth noting incidentally that in general the IR18's sidepod inlets are REALLY FUCKING HUGE. I guess it's because they're still keeping the fucking air filters that made them think putting an airbox on a turbo car was a good idea to start with but holy crap they could swallow a man.

Like when previous Champ Cars and IRL cars had sidepods this high, they had ramped underwings so the sidepod inlet actually only went maybe halfway to the bottom of the car (Lola started using stepped sidepods that raised the inlets even higher to make more ramp space), new IndyCar's are just as high, just as wide, and go all the way down. It reminds me of a MiG-25 or something.

Mind you they have like 3/4 of the right intake blocked off already here, but if they don't end up needing all of it for hot street races then it's wasted space from a performance standpoint. Aero kits were stuck with a spec sidepod duct anyways though, so not a huge deal I guess.

The cars were designed to produce less turbulence which in turn means less drag.
The rear pods when they were first introduced on the DW12 were actually used to clean the air up behind the tires, but they became an aero appendage after that when Manufacturer aero kits were introduced. In 2015, when the cars began to flip through the air, Indycar mandated that the rear pods be closed off at the back, increasing their drag produced and lowering their aero dynamic effectiveness.
Nearly every bit of the new kit produces less DF, but also less drag. This reduction in DF is offset by the much larger amount of it produced by the new floor.

It has a purpose this time, we can get a pretty reasonable comparison here.
Obviously teams could trim both aero kits way out, so the winglets on the pods aren't necessarily representative, but the fundamental structures are there.

Imagine not being able to fill a race day thread in two weeks.

It's not that bad.
Busy would be better, but that we have anyone here is progress.
>>
>>77339297
If the close out panels were generating so much drag they wouldn't have kept using full size pods (both Chevrolet and Honda introduced new wheelpods that were used on speedways in 2016, Chevrolet's were speedway specific and Honda's actually had bigger close out panels than the old ones)

The first day the ran the speedway aero kits in 2015 Montoya did a 226, and Penske usually sandbags like a motherfucker in testing.

One thing you'll notice is the overall contour of the body is better at directing air.
Chevrolet had the right idea by directing air under the rear flicks. Indycar took that and made it less draggy, afforded by the fact the radiators are moved where they're supposed to go.
>>
>>77339590
Moving the radiators somewhere non-retarded is basically the only real performance improvement here because it probably makes the floor more efficient, but it doesn't actually help for Indy qualifying where the dart shaped sidepods are actually useful for reducing drag.

That front wing is hugely draggy, it produced a fair bit of DF, but that was to offset the rear weight bias.
The sponsor blocker was draggy as well.

>That front wing is hugely draggy
No it's not. Being that long allows it to be super thin and have better flow attachment. Longer chord wings are less draggy for the same downforce level. You never see long wings like that normally on speedways because they're never allowed.

>that was to offset the rear weight bias.
That's not how it works, if you have a high rear weight percentage and a high front aero percentage the car will spin instantly.

It's not like the rear lacks DF, but on all ovals, drivers want understeer rather than oversteer.
More front DF offers more oversteer.

Porsche is leaving WEC.
Now Toyota is guaranteed to win Le Mans(they'll lose to a privateer LMP2 team).

If Kaiser wins the Lights championship it sounds like it'll be a done deal for Carlin to get in
