I'm from Concord, NC. Not even 5 minutes from Kannapolis. My dad actually grew up with Dale and knew Ralph. There is so many things about Dale that the typical Earnhardt fans don't know because so much wasn't talked about for his good ol' boy image. Such as...

While it's true that Dale dropped out of school because he wanted to go racing, he also was the kind of kid that was "too smart for school." He hated having to slow down for the rest of the class. School bored the shit out of him so he just decided to quit and go racing while working in the mill because that was at least a challenge to him. But he honestly regretted not finishing school so when Jr said he wanted to quit school and go racing like him he shipped Jr to military school and made him graduate so he wouldn't have the same regret.

Dale was way into going to Japan in 1996-98 and wanted the Japanese companies to join because if anyone wanted the NASCAR fan base to go global it was Dale. In fact he commented that he actually liked the Japanese fans more because of how respectful they were to him and each other when they did the signings over there. I can imagine it was nice when you consider how annoying his fan base probably was around him.

Also, Dale would/did probably hate the racist contingent of his fan base. Kannapolis is massively black and has been for years. And for the most part everyone gets along. Especially back then because everyone worked in the mill together.

He also hated politics, and while not a Democrat was definitely not a Republican. Every once in a while though he would do things that would make him seem political but really it was him playing to his fan base. He also wasn't a drinker. My dad says he never saw Dale drunk. He would drink occasionally in moderation but would prefer soda to beer

Sr was one of the first NASCAR guys to "brand" himself. He was the first to open up a dealership and created his own merchandise company. He also was the one who started "special" paint schemes with the chrome 3 car in the 91 Winston.
