Professional baseball was already established here for a decade before soccer was even codified. And the beginnings of American football were taking root about the time soccer was codified.

Soccer had a huge boom in the south over the past decade. I think this is in large part due to the suburb culture in Birmingham, Nashville, Atlanta, and other southern cities. They wanted a culture to set themselves apart from the inner cities 10-20 miles away so they molded themselves after the east coast peppiness of the 80s and 90s where soccer got it's start in the states. This culture has now slowly started to seep into the cities. Nashville may be the hippest city in the nation now. Birmingham even has had a huge boom downtown over the last couple of years and shows no signs of stopping.

Whenever the National team plays in a southern city supporter groups from all over the south flock to them (even Jacksonville!). Nashville will land a MLS team in the next couple of years for sure.

It's pretty easy to explain : those colonies predate standardized English rulesets (Rugby and Association football), so their games come from grassroots English ball games that developed locally. By the time football became a thing all Anglo colonies already had their thing and football spread through communities of British expats (students, mines workers etc).
