because they drained the farm for a series of 1-3 year seasons from older players, consistently had terrible draft classes, and realized they needed to rebuild a year and a half too late. After the 2013 season they should've sold everything they could. Out of curiosity, I decided to look up how Judge's strike out rate and comparatively high average ranks among other players. Firstly, he's currently putting up the 53rd highest strike out rate (29.8%) in history. Going down the list, it's not until the 462nd highest strike out rate (Matt Kemp, 2011: 23.1% strike out rate, .324 AVG, .380 BABIP) that I find someone within 5 points of batting average, and not until the 660th highest strike out rate (Manny Ramirez, 2000: 22.0% strike out rate, .351 AVG, .403 BABIP) that I find someone with a higher average than him. Truly a bizarre combination of stats.
