Also basketball and football are the best sports for poor people, but football has a deserved reputation in America of being a sport for bumders, so that only leaves basketball as Jamal's ticket out of the ghetto.

Black non-hispanic Americans overwhelmingly prefer basketball and football over all other sports. Other racial groups, like whites and hispanics of all race, are more likely to prefer baseball, hockey, or soccer (as well as niche sports like swimming, lacrosse, etc.). Asians and Jews are discouraged from focusing too much on sports growing up, because their parents recognize that it's not a valid career path. Black American culture glorifies physical prowess and sports above everything else, to the point that going pro is seen as something possible and achievable (helped by the desperate situation many black Americans are in). Finally, people of west african descent are more likely to be quicker sprinters and higher jumpers.
