No reason to have an air box on a car that doesn't have a naturally aspirated engine.

They use the airbox as an air ram for cooling to other parts of the car now from memory, cooling some weird little bits and pieces so they can slim down the side pods. It adds up to a more aesthetic package over all and more efficient cooling.

I don't think that's the case. An airbox is very draggy, more so than a rollhoop. Both obviously disturb the air, but an airbox leads to the engine bay while a roll hoop generally leads to a tapered engine cowling and possibly a fin.
Two different design philosophies, but roll hoops are mandated by F1 aren't they?
Be interested to see if they'd stay give they're using turbo charged engines now.

Roll hoops are mandated no one is using the minimum size airbox from what I can figure out from the specs. They definitely aren't using the minimum height with is well below the roll hoop height. I'm not sure if they would go, like I said they are using the airbox to help cool some other bits that aren't the main radiators, not sure were I saw that but I might try find it if I can. But as we know from this year the top 3 teams have tried to shrink the side pods as much as possible rather than the airbox that I'm sure can be much much smaller but all I can find are maximum dimension examples.

Yeah, that was a crazy race.
Not normally that intense, a couple factors lead to that. The new track surface caused the tires to not degrade like normal, instead of gradually shaving of rubber, they would not degrade and start to blister. Without degradation cars are next to each other on a knife's edge every lap. Downforce configuration was also a factor, it was too high.
