American sports aren't a bunch of different companies competeing under a neutral umbrella. In America, basically every team owner is a shareholder in one single company, the league. That way, it can be organized in a way that every owner is guarenteed to profit, "parity" is ensuring geographical demographic coverage is as large as the league can support, and wages can be tightly controlled from the top down with artificially maximums.

They took a competative market and turned it into a complete monopoly. It's the most capitalist evolution you can get.
