How important is possession in soccer?

Very important

you're an American, you wouldn't understand.
Its an empty stat, just like shots on goal. Literally the only stat that matters is the score. Beta autists scream and lose their minds over teams "parking the bus" and "being outplayed" but if a team is winning 1-0 and they switch to all out defending to see the result, then it's pretty clear they weren't really outplayed because they won.

Art.
Not important at all. Only thing that matters is goals
>always through possesion was about how long each team had the ball, like they used some kind of timer and then calculated the number of % possesion of time played
>turns out its a team’s passes divided by total passes completed by team
It's important because it allows you to create more chances, but it can't be empty. No one gives a shit how many times you pass it around if you're not getting proper chances, and then concede on a quick counter

Possession is a meme.
'Should be mid table fodder' Leicester won the title with around 35-40% all year, by playing fast moving breaks and massively solid defence. But, it still took a lot of skill to combine at that speed.
Possession football was good a few years back, but now it's largely figured out and just an outdated way of playing the game.
>that feelio when Celtic is the one remembered for beating Barcelona with low possession
