He has decent passing range and good vision but there's no place in the midfield for players who don't help defensively anymore and Messi's the definition of lazyness. Even if he wasn't, there's another problem: he abuses through balls. Great midfielders like Xavi and Iniesta only play through balls when they're positive it'll work so they won't needlessly waste possession or risk being countered. Of course, they also take risks at times, but Messi is not suited for that role because he's nearly fucking insane, that's how much of an offensive minded player he is. Midfielders should always play smart.

He has the best ball control in the world, there will always be a place for him. Besides becoming slower with age won't affect him as much as you're making out desu. Strolling around the pitch might look lazy but he's always in the right position to draw defenders and create space, doesn't need to out-pace anyone.
