Depends on sport. On races and events with multiple participants silver or 2nd place is obviously better than 3rd or bronze. If sport is usually done as tournaments of individual duels like in martial arts it can go both ways, as often both losers of semifinals might classified as bronze medalists instead of having B-final, olympic boxing has done that since 1948 and wrestling since 2008 to save broadcast time for more popular sports. In big team sports done as tournament like ice hockey, football or apehoop they have their own medal ceremonies that are bigger than in any individual events.. bronze might be better as you win it. Gives you a better marketing event, better show and happier audiences for bronze medalists.
