You guys know what's better than cave exploring?

Cave diving exploration!!
Just imagine being 100's of meters bellow water and one guy from the front group that went early is dead blocking the pass!!!
Don't forget you need a lot of hours of decompression for every extra 10min spent at those depths!!

http://dynamic.hs.fi/2014/deep/
>>
>>76847972
what the hell is wrong with these people
>>
>>76847948

>>
>>76847972
Couldn't they turn around? Or was the tunnel too tight? Imagine seeing a tiny little passage like this as a place you want to crawl through: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO74RXs8V8U
>>
This is by far the most retarded sport in the world
Why whould you want to enter a tiny hole?
I bet it's some weird fetichism of wanting to get fucked by planet earth of something I really don't get it
>>
>>76848001
One of them did turn back iirc.

What you can see in the pic is that the first guy died in the deepest part. One of his friends tried to help him but for every 10 min at 100m you need an extra hour of decompression. So he had to choose from dying from drowning or dying from decompression.

I can't even begin to think what it must felt like.

Oh, that's right:

>All had been going well until not so long ago, but then the dive started to go wrong.

>Kai Känkänen had tried to help his fellow diver, but he had little time in the freezing water at a depth of over one hundred metres. Känkänen did as he had been trained to do: he had to save himself. He tried to stay calm and swam on.

>Then he saw the body of another fellow diver.

Apparently climbing Everest is a total meme at this point. People queue to have their pictures taken on the summet. K2 is the patrician mountain.

>With around 300 successful summits and 77 fatalities, about one person dies on the mountain for every four who summit. It is more difficult and hazardous to reach the peak of K2 from the Chinese side, so it is usually climbed from the Pakistani side. Unlike Annapurna, the mountain with the highest fatality-to-summit rate (191 summits and 61 fatalities), or the other eight thousanders, K2 has never been climbed during winter.

its too dangerous and expensive to retrieve the corpses so they just stay mummified there forever, while other climbers pass by them

It's an alternative "cave cred" entrance. Video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAY-t32vyds

>Boost your cave cred (like street cred but for caves) by trying to squeeze through the alternate entrance to Deep Cave in Edwards County, Texas. Note that the main entrance to the cave is in a 3 m sink just out of camera view, but you don't get any cave cred for strolling through the big entrance.
>>
>>76848759
I'm always wondering about the getting down part. Seems to me that that would be much harder since you don't have the same vision downwards and some stuff like climbing over a steep crest backwards seem awkward in reverse. I'd just install a ropeline at the top and you can zoom downwards. ^^
>>
>>76847662
>nutty putty cave

is that what hope solos husband calls it
>>
>>76848055
Free climbing hands down. At least with that, the sense of danger comes from everything being in your control as opposed to caving where it comes from outright taking away personal control and putting you at the mercy of a fucking cave.
>>

For me it's the story of David Kirwan that always creeps me out.

http://www.snopes.com/horrors/freakish/hotspring.asp

>Kirwan and Ratliff rushed over to the pool to aid the terrified dog, and Kirwan’s attitude indicated he was about to go into the spring after it. According to bystanders, several people tried to warn Kirwan off by yelling at him not to jump in, but he shouted “Like hell I won’t!” back at them, took two steps into the pool, and then dove head-first into the boiling spring.

>Kirwan swam out to the dog and attempted to take it to shore; he then disappeared underwater, let go of the dog, and tried to climb out of the pool. Ratliff helped pull Kirwan out of the hot spring (resulting in second-degree burns to his own feet), and another visitor led Kirwan to the sidewalk as he reportedly muttered, “That was stupid. How bad am I? That was a stupid thing I did.”

>Kirwan was indeed in very bad shape. He was blind, and when another park visitor tried to remove one of his shoes, his skin (which was already peeling everywhere) came off with it. He sustained third-degree burns to 100% of his body, including his head, and died the following morning at a Salt Lake City hospital. (Moosie did not survive, either.)

Anyone who dies at yellowstone (Which happens more often than it should) is a prime Darwin award winner. The park management does everything in their power to drill it in people's heads not to get too close to the damn water, and they put up warning signs over every inch of the park.

Just today I was thinking that you never hear this word pulley
>>
>>76849229
I want to try it at least once.

You know what's funny is that I used to be afraid of the idea until I had a dream where I was ejected towards earth from space and for a few seconds it was a nightmare until I just kind of realized there's nothing I can do about it anyway so I embraced it and that fear immediately turned in to extreme excitement, and I woke up pumped. I've wanted to try it ever since.

>>
>>76849239
Kind of feel the same. The idea of it feels different from being at the top of a huge structure.
>>
>>76849300
My falling dreams always start with me a couple feet from hitting the ground so I mostly just feel fear.
Skydiving is a large investment if you really want to experience it. First jump you will always be strapped to the isntructor, so is not as fun as it could be.
Anyway isn't this whole idea of extreme sports more /asp/ material?

I imagine part of the fun is being able to access and/or discover deeper, bigger caverns that are only accessible through these horribly claustrophobic little crevices. I hate those signs

I live near the Kalalau Trail on Hawaii which is supposed to be fairly dangerous. At one part there's a river/ocean boundary and due to tide the water level can shift rapidly which is a bit dangerous, but if you're not retarded you can avoid it. Well they have a sign that says "300 People have died here, don't go swimming!" with a little tally board for deaths. It's such a joke, at least this one says "caves like this" and not this specific one

I did a static line jump from 2000 feet, it was far far worse than rockclimbing. I was the first out, looked around at the other guys and every single one was chalk white. I thought I was about to throw up. Everybody was fucking scared for the entire two days training.
It's not a meme jump where you're strapped to some guy at 10,000 feet and don't have to do anything. Back then if the main chute failed you had to go through a four stage process and pull out the reserve by hand. I'm pretty sure I would have just died if I had to do that.

The only way they can do it is slowly build up over years until fear is manageable.
Like this. They measured his brain in a scanner and he can basically control his fear/reaction response almost completely. This guy is a rare beast, the celebrity meme exponent who is the real shit. Nobody else could do what he did. Free soloed El Cap, climbing really hard and sketchy moves along the way, 3,300 feet. You have to know something about climbing to take in how fucking nuts this is. I don't see it being repeated for a long long time. It usually takes days doing this with ropes and placing gear, he did it in four hours. This is the only video so far.

I've never seen it, but I've met people who tried it for the first and bailed quite a way up, even with a shitton of gear the fear can creep up overwhelm. It's such a bastard wall and it goes on forever and wears people down until they cry.

I think the best climbers all did what I did when they read the reports and saw the pics, kind of sitting there chuckling, shaking your head and getting up from the pc and walk away. Fuck that. Yes, he prepared for a year, but even for him the mind control is not guaranteed.

No. It's no different from para regiment basic training. Supposed to be no big deal, sponsored grannies did it, or used to.
But even though the static line opens the chute, you still have to sit on the door ledge, throw yourself out and arch correctly or it can all go wrong. I spazzed out of the door with no arch and my mind literally switched off, went black. The next thing I know I'm looking up waiting it for it to open and late in the count. When it does and you can look around the feeling is pure euphoria, but it's just really exaggerated relief. You still have to steer it and land without breaking your legs. I wanted to do it again when I landed, but I wouldn't now. I just now I'll end up killing myself in some stupid way.
A few years before I did it some chick got pushed into the blades of a helicopter on the ground by the wind, seriously. This world hates you and wants you dead.

pic related, it looks exactly like this but with visible sheep.

Yeah, it's one of the most famous walls in the world. There are dozens of routes up it, pic related is the hardest that's ever been free climbed (no hanging on gear, only protection used to stop a fall). At this level it's advanced autism with tendons.
Nobody has ever soled any of the routes until Honnold, somebody will probably try one day, no guarantee they'll live.

I still think I'd prefer to do all this crazy height-based shit over caving - other than the stuff I'd be physically unable to do obviously. The lack of control in being stuck in a little tunnel, unable to move your arms and the idea that you've still got entire passages to overcome before you can get out and see daylight again is absolutely terrifying.

I think it'd actually be really hard to die in one of the main tunnels of these systems - unless there's water. Once you calm down from the panic your companions would help you out. At the very least they'd get your dead body out of the passage.

My mum had no idea she was claustrophobic until she got an MRI scan. She felt so uncomfortable doing it the first time that she went to another hospital with a bigger machine for the follow up.

Is it really that bad.
>>
>>76853748
The fucking weird thing is that I wasn't claustrophobic, ever in my life. I was even looking forward to it in a 'let's see what this is like' way.

But it's about three inches above your head and you're right in there with screeching and clanking all over. You've got a panic button, but if I hit it I knew I'd just feel like a total fag and have to come back to the same one. The nurses said about 2/10 bail out. yeah, it's bad, but I had a second one and just shut my eyes and breathed and it was ok.
