When Klay Thompson becomes a free agent in 2019, I could see him sign with the Spurs. Thompson is a great fit in Popovich's system. Great two way player. Klay is the 3rd/4th option now. Klay is good enough to be the 2nd option, but not good enough to lead a team. Klay could be the 2nd option for the Spurs with Kawhi as the first option. Kawhi/Klay would be a good duo. not really. Kawhi doesn't pass well he's mostly a spot up shooter and one-on-one baller. He's not the type of guy who makes others better around him. Thompson is a spot up shooter, to get the most from him you need to move the ball and Kawhi doesn't really help that (in fact he sort of hurts the spurs offense, it's his defense which makes him invaluable to pop).

The spurs are in a weird place, where the parts don't really fit together well. The old guard play great together but their best/youngest pieces don't fit that scheme well.

Coach K knew how to use him. Stick him on the wing, get him in motion and let him be one of the all time greatest spot up shooters the league ever saw. Take primary ball handling away from him, don't let him play hero ball, and he'd be a 30 point a night scorer in the NBA.

Problem is Melo's been on two dumpster fires of a franchise, and never had a top end ball handler to allow him to be a spot up option, or a coach who wouldn't let him be a hero-baller. He's outrageously good off the ball, and a better catch and shoot player then anyone not named Clay Thompson.

the problem with the Cavs, and I've gone into detail about this in my other blogs on /nba/, is that LeBron and Kyrie will always end up in iso ball.

Kyrie in particular, has great dribbling skill so when you take him out of iso or pick n rolls, where he can break down the defense for a floater, stepback or kick out for a 3.

Here lies the problems, the Cavs offense ends up breaking down to ball watching when that happens. If you remember those Kobe teams from the around '06 where it was him, Odom and a bunch of scrubs, it's very similar.

So, Kyrie needs shooters to be in the corner. But instead of running motion based offense around a lot of movement (think Atlanta with Kyle Korver), they instead got Korver and Love sitting in the corner waiting to take a semi contested three

So the solution is two fold. Move kyrie and aquire a pass first point guard, and then change the offense to be more free flowing.

It's even as simple as running a weave more often, getting some movement across the lanes that will force defenses to react.

The elephant in the room however is LeBron doesn't really like to play in motion based offenses. He wants to get out on the break and run, but after that he spends time off the shot clock looking someone to cut but often the wings will just sit there in the corner and they start the offense with 14 or less on the clock. So you end up with a shitty pick and pop from TT or a LeBron 3 off a screen.

In other words, in order to succeed and beat the Warriors, the Cavs need to adapt to the modern NBA. It's not just about shooting 3s (which the Cavs do as much as anyone), it's about move off ball and forcing the defense to make decisions. That will let LeBron use his high bbiq to find spots and seams in the defense where he can deliver the ball or attack to the rim.

In the 80s it was always the Lakers or Celtics with the Pistons bridging the gap into the 90s where the Bulls dominated (except for 2 years without Jordan where the Rockets won twice), then the 00s had the Lakers and Spurs going nuts. The 10s have basically been owned by whichever team Lebron is on and now the Warriors are looking to close out the decade strong.

Every so often you get another team coming in to shake things up, but for the most part it's been a handful of teams (mostly the Celtics and Lakers) owning the league.
