You're not looking at the big picture. In times of crisis, it's up to the team to stick together and be aware that if you aren't doing a good job, you're expendable. The fact that Montero decided to throw Arrieta under the bus when the fault lied entirely on Montero is why it was so unforgivable and Rizzo (The team leader) had to come in and defend Arrieta. I'm sure if Montero was havinga great year and throwing everyone out and the the only time he was having trouble was because of Arrieta, then he might have gotten some leeway. but the fact he was complete shit is why he got the boot because it shows he'd rather blame everyone else than self evaluate.

tl;dr in times of crisis, it's best to look inwards rather than for others to blame and tear up the team from within. Montero did the latter and got thrown off the team in less than a day because the Cubs can't afford that sort of shit.
