are there actually casuals that post in /cfb/ who only follow P5 football?

Embarrassing tbqh
>>
So didn't care about or even watch football at all until last year. Last year I joined WSU's marching band so how the team does actually effects me. Last year I got really into it and stuff but I still don't know that much about anything. how do you go about learning about everything? just watching enough games?
>>
>>76691505
Learning about your own team and getting to know your PAC-12 rivals is a good start. The Apple Cup rivalry, too.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_State_Cougars_football

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-12_Conference

And in general, watch as many CFB games as you can.
>>
>>76691505
Welcome to CFB, friend.

Being in the marching band is really cool. You'll get to witness some great football games in person.

Winspedia is a cool site that can help you get to know your team better, and shows head to head data on your team vs rivals

It's just sad. We might as well replace you in the PAC-12, and you can drop down and be a Big Sky school.

I don't think the athletic department as Wazzu has a lot of brains. They only recently came into money, when the conference expanded to 12, and they just blew it all on Mike Leach.

Maybe they just had a bunch of old commitments from those dark days? Once they play Boise and Montana this year, I checked the schedule... next year they host Auburn and BYU.

>doubled season ticket cost

>>
>>76699500
I don't remember the prices exactly, I get in free. Last year it was around $150 for student passes. This year I think it's $256
>>
>>76699584
As a student at my shitty G5, I got in free, yes. As an alum, season tix weren't cheap.

For a P5 school, that price isn't unreasonable, but jacking them THAT MUCH over ONE season is, while not illegal, certainly a dick move.

Way to go, Coogs.

I hate that App doesn't get to play Georgia Southern in Week 13.

It's mostly because ESPN loves to put our rivalry game on a Thursday Night because they know people will tune in as long as there isn't a P5 matchup.

It's been on Thursday nights in mid-October/November for the last 3 seasons and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

We do have a couple other teams worth watching. No one watches them though. We have good Women's soccer, women's basketball, and volleyball teams. Their games are actually a lot of fun to watch but students only care about football.

I play at the basketball games but not with the band. I'm in the drumline and for everything but football we are completely separate. They have a small pep band play basketball and volleyball games. They have a drum set guy instead of the drumline. I play that too but they have a couple guys that are music performance majors with a drunset focus so it's way out of my league. The drumline does all men's and women's bball and soccer as well. And a couple of random volleyball games and swim meets

Ohio State's student ticket package is ~$130, but being able to go to the Michigan game last season was worth every penny of it. There is a pretty large demand for buying and selling tickets, and since the Michigan game was at the end of Thanksgiving Break, a lot of my out of state roomates that went home over break and weren't going to be able to make it back in time sold their Michigan ticket for like $200 and ended up turning a profit on their student tickets.
>>
>>76714332
How did they sell the tickets?

Is it not through your Student ID?

At my university, they swipe your ID at the gate and check the photo. No match, no entry.

Also, what in the fuck is California thinking with this travel ban?
>>
>>76719720
I don't want to really bring politics in this thread, but it's basically just making a moral statement. It's not really a ban per se either, but a limitation of state funds which can't be used by state agencies to go to other states that have laws that California deems as discriminatory against LGBT people. Bama, Texas, and SD all just recently passed laws that allow adoption and fostering agencies to deny LGBT couples' requests solely because of sexual orientation or gender identity. Kentucky also just passed a law saying that school clubs can ban or exclude LGBT people from joining based on the religious freedom argument. This is in addition to the original four, Kansas, NC, Mississippi, and Tennessee which all had the limitation for similar reasons.

All it really means though is that until it's lifted, Cal, UCLA, SDSU, San Jose State, and Fresno State can't do away games in any of those eight states unless they already had the games scheduled (like Cal and UNC this year)

I transferred to UT in 2011

I recommend biking everywhere. It’s fuel efficient, drivers are much more accommodating to bikers on the road, and there is fucking nowhere to park without paying for it often. Plus you’ll get in shape quick.

Don’t work out at Gregory Gym unless it’s a weekend. Go to the rec center adjacent to the football stadium.

On that note, anything that is a meme in Austin is packed. Oh, it’s popular or well known? That means it’s packed. This goes for bars, restaurants, and which roads to drive on. Start to find hidden gems.

Get groceries in bulk and learn to cook. Bring snacks since you’ll be on campus for hours because you don’t want to constantly buy food on campus. It will drain your wallet.

Listen to Jason and Deb in the morning. 6-10am, 101.5 FM, alternative rock. Best radio morning talk show. The male host is a Longhorn fan, the female host is fucking hot

Sit in the front of the class. Go every day. Take notes. Ask questions, but don’t steer the lecture off course. If you want to do that, go to office hours or ask as class is dismissing. This way the prof likes you and knows you, but is not annoyed by you.

Hook ‘em

The Constitution specifically prohibits any law that honors a religious institution.

Nobody is forcing nuns to adopt, but if that nun forces some to have/not have an abortion, that nun is going to jail. We have personal autonomy in this country; you can worship however you want, until you start fucking with your neighbors.

>>76720931
Except that law doesn't have anything to do with abortion.
It has to do with religious adoption services being given the freedom to do what they please in accordance to their freedom of belief.
California wants the state to get involved in each of these states and make them adopt policies which fly in the face of their beliefs.

Also the first amendment specifically says
>Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...
It's as more about protecting the Church from the state, and guaranteeing freedom of worship by ensuring the state doesn't get involved in matters of faith
The constitution protects the laws these commiefornians are trying to take down.

There are, as you can see, at least 5 SEC schools, strictly better academically than other schools which have AAU membership, yet the AAU haven't extended membership to them.

Georgia is the most egregious example, it's a great school that is en par with Texas (which many still consider a public Ivy) yet they were denied membership I think twice

Gainesville doesn't have much, but it does have a lot of kickass natural parks and outdoorsy activities.
Payne's Prarie is among the best. It's was site of an old Timucuan village, and later a colonial Spanish ranch. It's infested with alligators, one of the only places in Florida where you can see wild bison, and wild horses that trace their lineage to the Spanish settlers that first set foot on Florida

UGA, Auburn, and Alabama deserve to be in the AAU at the very least. UGA and Alabama have very well respected schools and are increasing rapidly towards making all of their schools good, while Auburn is a great engineering school (which is, iirc, the #1 factor in AAU). The fact is that the southern schools lagged behind others because they were founded later, and they can't join the AAU because the membership won't allow it right now.

I miss those days, but they're gone forever and it was probably doomed before the Big 12 even formed. The Big 12 was a marriage of convenience between two conferences that were staring down raids. The Pac-10 wanted Colorado and Texas. The SEC already got Arkansas and wanted Texas A&M and Oklahoma. The Big Ten wanted Missouri. A few tweaks aside (Mizzou going to the SEC and Nebraska to the Big Ten) it kind of looks like the Big 12 only served to delay things by 20-25 years instead of preventing them. If Oklahoma stays past the GoR I'll eat my hat and once that happens it's basically game over.

I doubt it. Religious schools have proven MORE than willing to turn a blind eye to their athletes' behavior, see:

>Baylor
>SMU
>>
>>76750207

BYU and Liberty don't fuck around with their honor codes, they are serious about their uptight rules. At BYU they have people who go to the parking lots of bars to search for license plates registered to any current students. Just because Baylor is the sleaziest institution in America doesn't mean the other religious schools are too.

>>

Maybe. They've got too much on the line with the transition to FBS, in both money and prestige. BYU has a devout and ever-expanding Mormon population that's used to the kind of bullshit they impose at the college. Liberty, less so, and even fewer of their athletes will be willing to play along.

Maybe I'm wrong, but my gut tells me I'm not. We won't know for a while, I suppose.

Although I have a pet theory that if Tom Herman fails spectacularly Texas may eventually consider it, because Texas is soulless and desperate.
>>
>>76753303

Tom Herman will be a reliable 8 win coach at Texas, but I don't think he is Natty material.

Unlike every other time liberals try to deny the slippery slope argument, the case you are trying to make is actually a fallacy.
The state isn't denying anyone the right to adopt. It's allowing people to exercise their religious rights by running their religious services however they please. They are denying them the right adopt AT THEIR AGENCY. If faggots want to adopt so bad there's plenty of secular adoption agencies they can do it through.

In any case, there is no legitimate religious group that would deny a racial minority couple, or a mixed race couple the right adopt at their agency so your argument is absolutely invalid

So what's the best team in Texas this fall, everyone?

Baylor and Texas both have fresh blood (from the AAC) in the coaching positions.

Houston, TCU, and Texas Tech will probably back slide some.

North Texas has been exceeding reputations.

San Antonio recruited like a boss in the off season.

That's not at all what I said. I said Rutger's WAS good once, I only mentioned the Big East as the time frame. Plenty of those Big East schools have gone on to be great; Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, WVU, and VA Tech being only a few examples.

>worrying about preseason ranks.
Name a time when preseason affected the final outcome.
Inb4- TCU/Baylor, they would've advanced to the playoff if there was a b12 CCG.

Unless youre talking top 4 then rankings really don't matter, that's why the Selection Committee doesn't start until November.
>>
>>76728248

I worked on the committee to get a certain school into the AAU way back when. We succeeded.

The main components are research and medical. If you just produce a metric shitton of research dollars in the forms of grants and whatnot and produce a ton of scholarly work AND have a decent medical school or are associated with a good medical school you get in.

The school I worked for has all that. Alabama does not. UGA does not. Auburn does not. It's why Nebraska got booted out, they didn't have a medical school when that became something important and they didn't land enough money for research.

Really, it's all about money. Look at the endowments of AAU schools. They be rich, bitch.

it allows a team to be in a good spot to make the post-season.

If you're Alabama, and you start in the Top 5, and go 11-1, you're probably making it to the playoff.

If you're Boise State, start unranked, and go 11-1, and even 12-0. you're not doing shit.

It's basically white privilege in sports form.

>play fucking nobody, the best teams they play this year are BYU and Washington State
>only chance of making playoff is if you go undefeated and at least two P5 conferences have 2+ losses for every team, even then it's not a sure thing
>fags whine about this on /cfb/ and compare it to white privilege

Working as intended. Not all 11-1/12-0 records are equal. 99% of the time it is more impressive when a P5 team goes undefeated or one loss than a G5 team doing the same because their SoS are not even in the same ballpark. The playoff rankings don't come out until late in the season so they don't have a preseason bias. Preseason poll bias no longer exists after a few weeks anyways because by then the fraud teams have been exposed and the darkhorse teams start getting attention.

preseason rankings are shit, m8.

Mid-season rankings actually help, because you're able to gauge the talent of the teams undefeateds are beating.

Take BYU in '84: >>76792092
>Pitt ranked preseason #3
(Pitt actually sucked that year, going 3-7-1)
>Get throttled by BYU
>BYU gets week 1 win against #3
>BYU catapulted into the top ranking all because of a meme preseason ranking
>>
>>76792025
at least florida isnt a flyover state
>>
>tfw someone mentions your team but they are just using it to prove how easy a team's schedule is
>>
>>76792092
>>76792152

Wouldn't happen again today. BYU's first game this year is against LSU, who will probably be #10-15 at kickoff. If BYU goes undefeated while LSU finishes unranked and 7-5 the committee isn't going to pretend like that was a huge win against a top 10 team. Thanks for proving my point that midmajor undefeated records aren't as impressive as P5 undefeated records, though.

>Thanks for proving my point that midmajor undefeated records aren't as impressive as P5 undefeated records, though.

Who ever said that wasn't true? And what does that have to do with anything?

Preseason rankings nearly always inflate P5s over G5s, since G5s rarely receive preseason hype, aside from the occasional Houston.
>>
>>76792209
this.

Preseason rankings basically never do G5s any favors. It usually takes WEEKS for more than 1 G5 to even make it into the Top 25.
>>
>>76774863
This is a pretty funny joke. Sometimes I think Coosa fans take it seriously, though.

No, that would be ridiculous.
>>
>>76792209

Well for BYU I will say if they go undefeated this year they absolutely deserve a playoff spot. They play LSU, Utah and Wisconsin in the first 3 weeks of the year then later in the year they play Boise State and Mississippi State.

>>76792226

It's because G5 teams can't sustain success so they typically have to earn their vote instead of getting the benefit of the doubt. If they are good it is because they caught lightning in a bottle with a player and/or coach. The coach leaves for a P5 job after a couple years and the special player graduates. It's very rare for a situation like Boise used to have where a great coach stuck around for a long time, which resulted in them getting preseason rankings and even now they are still the most respected G5.

Well yeah, you're basing preseason off of last year's returning class, the coach, and the recruiting class.
Of course there will be errors, but saying you expect Saban/Meyer/Harbaugh to continue to win 10+ games isn't outlandish.
Saying Western Michigan will go undefeated in regular season after an 8-5 record is considered a risky bet, Vegas would agree with that.
This year is even worse, the only returning G5 coaches with success are Navy, MTSU, and Boise State. Do any of them look top 25 to you? If not, I don't see why preseason rankings are so controversial.
They're used to gauge how important a game is to the overall season to every team. By the time we truly know who the best teams are that's when the Selection Committee releases their rankings.

>FCS school with FBS talent vs FCS school with FCS talent
hmm
>>
Thread is almost dead, so I'll finish on a high note.

I am currently watching the Ohio St-Michigan game from 2016. I am not a fan of either team, but holy shit, this game was hype as fuck. The crowd, the teams, all of it. What a game! I'm so fucking ready for college football. I'm a Nebraska fan (class of '14, grew up in Omaha), but I'm in love with all of CFB. So much passion, excitement. Nothing compares. Anyone who tells you the NFL is better is lying. Any Eurofag who talks about soccer is a literally laughingstock. God damn. It needs to be college football season already.
>>
>>76805673

I've been re-watching some great ones from last year, that was certainly a classic. In no particular order, I've watched:

>UT vs ND
>UH vs Navy
>Louisville vs UH
>Army vs UNT, Heart of Dallas Bowl
>Pitt cs Clemson
>OU vs OSU
>Lousiville vs Clemson
>Temple vs Penn State (2015)
>>
>>76805898

Thanks for the recs. I'm probably going to go back and re-watch some of those. I'd also add this year's Rose Bowl. I was pulling for PSU, but that game was amazing regardless. I watched it with my dad and my 13 year old sister. I grew up watching Husker games with my dad. And now my 13 year old sister is into CFB. Pretty magical desu. Actually tearing up thinking about it. Sorta drunk though, so things are hitting me pretty emotionally right now.

CAN IT PLEASE BE SEPTEMBER ALREADY?

YouTube has a surprising amount.

I really like the 30 minute condensed games, or no huddle ones.

Sounds good. Are they just fan made stuff or are they professional? I assume I can just search "Washington state Vs Oregon 2016"

I don't know what you watched but OU got destroyed.
>>

It didn't have to be EVEN to be enjoyable or noteworthy.

UH dismantled Louisville, but it was still interesting to watch such a dynamic offense, specifically the QB, get so thoroughly shut down by an outstanding defense.
>>

Wow, thanks. I actually meant was vs osu because that was a more interesting game, plus i got some camera action on that one. It was nice because the part I was in was in the ESPN highlights. I'll just look for it in the same channel

I JUST realized that Butch Davis, the coach from UNC's seasons where the NCAA should have handed out the death penalty (2008-2009) is going to be the head coach at FIU in the fall.

As an OSU fan who was at that game I can tell you that living through that game live was fuckig awful. OSU couldn't score or move the ball, neither could Michigan but you never really notice what the other team not doing well when your team isn't playing well, and on when we went for it on 4th I thought they were going to say he came up short. That game was so fucking stressful. It was 4 straight hours of anxiety until Curtis Samuel got the edge on the last play. Definitely made it all worth it.

Unlike Goose Island and Wicked Weed, which started independently and were bought later, Landshark was created by A-B to resemble and compete with Corona.

Blue Moon was started by MillerCoors to pretend to be a craft brewery as well. There was/is a big legal dispute between Blue Moon and real craft breweries over them marketing themselves as a "Craft Beer."

I went to a soccer game in Vienna, The "Green and Whites" of "Rapid Wien" and was sorely disappointed.

The crowd was smaller than an ECU football game, and had half the energy.

It was a grudge match against their arch-rivals, who had just won the last game of the series. 0/10 see me after class, Europe.

Is it acceptable to follow a Group of Five school and a Power Five school (assuming you graduated from said Power Five school)?
>>
>>76807354

Follow whoever you want.

I like Eastern Michigan because they have a gray field and it looks cool on TV.

I spent 6 years in the Army, but I like Navy football because they use a 70 year old playbook and still get ranked.

Don't let people tell you what to be in life Anon.
>>
>>76807354
I guess, because it's unlikely that a G5 and your P5 school have a rivalry. Do you have a justifiable reason to follow a G5 school? Not that that's necessary, but I feel like to appreciate any cfb team you need a justification, no matter how convoluted.
>>
>>76807354
no

following conferences is encouraged tho
>>
>>76807384
Not really, it's just the P5 school I follow is one of the blue bloods and I figure it'd be fun to root for a G5 underdog. Preferably one that has a reasonable chance of memeing its way into a New Years Six Bowl at some point.
>>
>>76807420

>Preferably one that has a reasonable chance of memeing its way into a New Years Six Bowl at some point.

Soo... an AAC school or Boise State?
>>
>>76807354
That's a good question. I follow two P5 schools just because attended both. Do what you want.
>>
>>76807436
I suppose the AAC school I'll follow would be UCF. Admittedly the reason is somewhat stupid, but I was for some fucked up reason rejected by their main rivals (while I got into several better schools which was weird).
>>
>>76807470

>main rivals

ECU? Or USF?

>I seriously doubt EZU rejects anyone
>>
>>76807478
USF. For some fucked up reason I got rejected by USF but accepted by The Ohio State and Texas (granted they were both off the waitlist).
>>
Is conference bias/east coast bias a real thing as far as rankings go? I lot of people last year at my school kept saying we should have been ranked higher than they were. Is it real or are they just butthurt? school is wsu btw
>>
>>76807566

To be fair, outside of USC and the occasional flash in the pan team like Washington, the PAC-12 in general hasn't done well in out of conference games.

PAC-12 runner up Colorado got completely shut out by a pretty run of the mill team in diet Okie.

Just look at the numbers, and the PAC-12's money lags waaaaay behind all the other power conferences.
>>
>>76807566
>>76807579

I say this not to relegate west coast football into irrelevance, but just look at the stadium attendance figures to see that CFB isn't as popular on the West Coast as it is out East.

For example, ECU is a run of the mill East Coast G5 school, and its stadium attendance figures are comparable with half the PAC-12's.

That says something about how seriously both the fans and the university take CFB.
>>
>>76807436
the entire upper half of the AAC /and/ the MW is in play, ya bitches
>>
>>76807492
really I heard the opposites. UCF is the one with the fucked up admissions. I heard of people gets accepted into UF but declined by UCF
>>
>>76807588
LA is the only one that traditionally cares about football.
>>
>>76807588
>>76807579
I guess that makes sense. the idea that football isn't a big deal here just seems weird because at WSU it's a really big deal for the students. and I can see why people would think there's a bias because WSU at it's high point last season was ranked 20 and at that time we were #1 in the PAC-12. If they're all easy teams I guess it makes sense though.
>>
>>76807631
Speaking as the resident Cal alum here, it's not even that the teams are necessarily bad. Usually the top few teams in the conference are really good. It's more that there isn't really a football culture at a lot of the schools in the conference. Look at Stanfurd. They've consistently had a ranked team recently and their attendance figures at games are pathetic. Students at big name universities like Cal or Stanfurd don't go there for sports, they go there for school. I'd imagine it's that way for a lot of the teams in the PAC too. Football just isn't as big of a deal-generally speaking-here out west and it's compounded by a general lack of interest in the sport by more academically-focused student bodies.

Navy has a grueling schedule.

Lots of starting talent got lost, as usual.

Almost all the hard conference games are on the road.

Even the OOC schedule only has one home game.

Who knows, maybe another Will Worth will dark horse his way into the QB position. As it sits on paper though, it's going to be a tough year for the midshipmen.

I'll definitely be in Annapolis for the Air Force game, and maybe even Cincinnati.

I was there with my pops last year for the AAC CCG. Navy is one of my favorite teams, I love watching that meme option offense control the clock and shove the football down the field.
