It's not like Canada is an unathletic country (we have a small population tho), so we do produce good players every now and then.

However, we are behind the 8 ball because we don't have a proper national team that can beat anyone. So this deters local talent from wanting to stay.

There needs to be a generation and a half of sacrificial lambs. These are excellent players that are extremely selfless, and are willing to stay in Canada and build up a roster instead of going overseas for a chance of joining a winning team.

These players will have to sacrifice big, because they know that staying in Canada to help produce a team will mean they will almost certainly not make it to a cup final.

However, once we have 1.5 generations of this, and Canada actually has a team that gives players a reason to stick around, then we can see some progress.

Toronto vs Montreal playoff finals were huge, lots of people watched it and the CPL is going to help build our nation up.

I would say in 5-10 years Canada will be better than the US at soccer, just because our ethnic enclaves are so much more ethnic. We celebrate our European heritage much better than the US does theirs, the World Cups and the Euros are always a big hit in the big cities.

Too cold is a meme, as kids we played soccer almost every day of the year even when it was cold and there are a ton of domes with turf fields where you can play. Also futsal/indoor is a thing and it improves your skills in a different way ultimately making you a better player.

The osa/csa mens/youth program is an absolute joke when it comes to player selection and development.

We only seem to pick big and fast players, and this begins at the youngest ages so you'll have 9 year old jamal who can outrun every other kid on the pitch at his age do really well up until age 14 when everyone else starts to catch up with him but little jamal has 0 tactical understanding of the game because no coach has ever bothered to teach him
