The first fight was close but Ward truly left it all in the ring tonight. In the early rounds it looked like it would be all Kovalev and he'd even get a finish, but by the later rounds it was clear Ward was just letting him gas himself out. Before Ward started dominating the 8th round, Kovalev tried to play a hard body shot as a low blow and even got a short break but that wasn't enough. He was clearly hurt by a shot to the head. This was the most strongest round of the fight and Ward would've likely won every round from there if not a later finish. I would've liked to see if Kovalev could've lasted another 30 seconds but he was getting lit up and doing a bad job protecting himself.

Kovalev will be a top fighter someday but he still has a long way to go. His plan is to just brawl and fans love that, but he's still too one-dimensional compared to boxers with real boxing skills. He couldn't even finish a 50 year old man. Kovalev is older than Ward, but his career is several years younger. He moved to the top too quickly.

It's crazy how boxing has been on the decline in the USA since 1950 (boxing, horse racing, and baseball were as big from 1900-1950 as football, basketball, and baseball are today) and hardly exists as a third-tier sport as of 2000, yet we are still able to provide the best boxers in the world against countries where the sport is undergoing a renaissance like Russia, Germany, Poland, UK, etc..

Considering how competitive the fight had been, the way it ended is obviously going to be contentious. Even had Ward decisively won every round up until that point, it would still be a contentious stoppage. That's the issue here.

Why the lower weights? Because that's where the rest of the world is, many parts of the world are on the smaller side, due to genetic reasons and poor nutrition so if you only know the larger divisions you are not going to see as much of it.

But their style was very unflattering? Never stopped Floyd and other Americans from receiving plenty of praise and attention for similar, subdued fighting styles. It was the fact that they were Eastern Europeans that people stopped watching, had they been Americans they would have received nothing but praise and stardom.

Poor people have always been the dominant force in boxing. There were a shitload of great Jewish fighters years ago and then they moved into the middle class.

I really don't know why anyone is pretending to be happy with this fight, or these fights. I don't care if Ward hit him with a great right, and I don't care that Kovalev was gassing. The fight was not over, we all know that much. A warning would have changed Ward's game plan, so that is a massive butterfly effect on the fight. As far as I see it, we have 20 rounds of pretty competitive boxing that is unresolved. I don't see how this could leave a good taste in any boxing fans mouth.

He did look like it. He wasn't that impressive after Chilemba and he said he trained improperly. Then he gassed out by the 5th in the 1st fight with Ward and said he overtrained. Then he started heaving and was breathing through his mouth again in the 5th for the 2nd fight, despite having a new conditioner.

It's enough for me to suspect he may have an endurance problem.

With that said, Kovalev would still clean out the division if Ward wasn't there and he'd have great and competitive matches with Gvozdyk and Beterbiev. His power and his jab could carry him far.
