So first, Football is a proletarian and sub-proletarian sport in majority in suburbs area of big cities. It's a fact that France for economical reason, and mostly bad ones, since the 70's imported large amount of people from ex colonies. Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and of course Guinea, Cameroon, Mali, etc. The consequences of this mass immigration and specially visible in football went more visible in the late 90's. If you look in the French Football Team in the 50's, we had Polacks. If you look in the 70's, we had Spaniards, if you look in 98 world cup, we had : Armenians, Algerian, Islands French DomTom, few African born, Portuguese, etc. It was always like this. In France, Football is promoted as a social elevator. Who wants to go up ? Of course the poor people from Sub-proletarian area. In majority, they are black and at least from foreign origin. Upper-class kids in Western countries have better professions to go into than sports.
Sports might be high paying (NHL average salary is $2.4 million, NFL is $2.1 million, for example), but they also have short careers and those careers can be terminated via injury - and if you've oriented yourself toward that sport at the expense of your studies you are fucked.

Lower class families have, or believe they have, fewer options or are less inclined to see the reality of chasing a sports-career, and will more be more likely to orient their kid to "follow that dream". (See: Hoop Dreams documentary.)

The best example of this class divide in sports is MMA. There are very few, if any, UFC athletes from upper-class families, and there's a good reason for that: the UFC pays very poorly, its athletes are treated poorly by the UFC, the Reebok contract era means athletes can't make money the way GSP did, the sport itself is brutal and leads to a shortened lifespan and a degraded quality of life.
Upperclass parents aren't going to miss those reds flags, neither should anyone, but some might see it as the only chance to make it out of the favela.
