You don't understand at all. At younger levels, it's true sheer athleticism has a better impact. But with time technical and mental ability develops and comes to the fore. That's why a lot of "really athletic" younger players fizzle out in their mid-20's. They rely too much on that brand of soccer and don't broaden their skill set.

The true GOATs have to have an added mental element that isn't usually accompanied by overly dominant athleticism.

The problem is a lot of the potentially best soccer minds/bodies go play football/basketball/baseball and disappear, it's not that the best soccer players are transitively the best basketball players.

No. If you actually watch the league play they are not "insanely" fast. They are fast just like most strikers and attacking mids are but it isn't their premier quality. It's vision and more importantly technical control and dribbling WHILE moving at a very quick pace. That is the threshold precious few players, especially those of elite physical ability, pass. The fastest players on the field are typically wingers with comparatively poor technical ability, their job is to simply run the ball up and down the field and cross shit in. That's where most of our "fastest" would end up.
