Vandoorne, like most rookies now, had barely any testing. The new F1-PU is completely different to the GP2-Dallara (hence the change in F2 car next year.) Ocon is doing better because he had those shit Manor races and endless Mercedes / Renault testing experience.

Vandoorne is clearly under-performing. He's had 7 races to prove himself against Fernando Alonso, and he hasn't delivered.
Palmer on the other hand is dong fine. People need to get off his back and give him time. He's only had one and a half seasons, and 14 Friday test driver sessions before that. And let's not forget, he was GP2 champion.

Fiat are the kind of company that were they to acquire a Dacia type brand - cheap stuff using last gen or parts bin components (from Renault in Dacia's case) costing a few % less than parent brand equivalents, they would try sooner or later to market a luxury model. I have also always been a Button fan, from when I started watching properly, maybe 13 years ago. Everything you described in your post, how you feel about the possibility of him leaving, the tentativeness at the end of the 08 season up to when he went with brawn, when he won the campionship. I feel exactly the same and felt exactly the same.

I also remember when he got signed with McLaren alongside Hamilton, I was so SO pleased having a all British team, and then finding out that there would be an all German team in Mercedes, Schumacher and Rosberg (the old enemy :P), I was so excited for that season for the Anglo-German shoot out.

My favourite memory of him has to be Canada 2011, I remember watching the race, and it got to that point of the day where I was going to the pub with some mates because of all the rain delays. When we got to the pub the race was on and it had just restarted, everyone I was with had no interest in it and were chatting away.... but not me, I was absolutely glued to that screen, couldn't take my eyes off of it. then that final lap, Jenson closing on Sebastian, I think I was so close to the edge of my seat I was hovering. And then it happened Vettel made that mistake, that fateful, glorious mistake. It was absolutely beautiful. I jumped and shouted in this quiet country pub accidentally throwing my pint over the guy next to me, I was just ecstatic, overjoyed, thrilled. Truly a magical moment in my life

Its one of the few defining moments that I can remember watching F1. Its gonna stick with me forever.

Although to give you a serious answer, just watch races. It's as simple as that. It's the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend, so it's on your continent.

Tomorrow is FP1 and FP2 (free practice sessions 1 and 2). Then on Saturday it's FP3 and qualifying. Then on Sunday is the race. In the practice sessions they're just practicing to see how fast they can go, of course. It gives you a good indication of how quick each team and each driver is looking that weekend.

Ferrari are better at using the tyres. They did more testing when Pirelli was testing the 2017 tyres, so they learned much more - ALSO I only learned today that ONLY FERRARI decided to stick a wide rear wing on their "mule car" (pic related) to simulate 2017 downforce levels (so again this allowed them to gain more data on the tyres). Mercedes and RB didn't do this.

Perhaps this informed Ferrari's decision to choose a short wheelbase, plus whatever wizardry they're employing with the "GRIP" dial on their steering wheel.
