Zak Brown going HARD:

>I don’t want to get into what our options are. Our preference is to win the world championship with Honda. But at some point you need to make a decision as to whether that’s achievable. And we have serious concerns

>Missing upgrades, and upgrades not delivering to the level we were told they were going to, you can only take that so long. And we’re near our limit

>There’s lots of things that go into the decision and we’re entering that window now of 'which way do you go when you come to the fork in the road

>Do I think you can win with a customer engine? I think you can

RON DENNIS BTFO.

>When you actually look at the impact of loss of FOM (Formula One payments) money and loss of sponsorship, it starts to diminish the commercial benefits of what Honda brings to the table

IMO they're just as likely to end with Renault or even (rebadged) Ferrari engines.

AFAIK the biggest issue with Honda engine is combustion and fuel. The ICE was designed for Mobil fuel (hence the excellent performance in test bench), but when Red Bull poached them away, Honda was left with BP Castrol. It will take time to get the fuel quality and trackside operations to Mobil's level.

And when Honda finally solves the problems for next season, Zak might feel a bit stupid with Merc customer engine and restricted engine modes. Sauber, however, will be one happy team.

Octane number and energy content are important, but there are many more variables such as flame speed and things. Things that help to get maximum power and efficiency from the crankshaft.

And due to regulations, the engine manufacturers can do almost anything with fuel.
With optimal fuel the HP, fuel mileage and combustion efficiency gains can be massive.

Fucking based Zak.
1) Red Bull have proved you definitely can win with a customer engine
2) It's clear Zak is pissed off, he made pointed comments at the end of Indy how it "wasn't surprising" that a Honda engine blew up on him
3) He's absolutely right about Honda's payments not really making up for the loss of sponsorship. McLaren were in a strong place in 2014, they had the best fucking engine on the grid. And McLaren usually do have one of the biggest budgets, so I think they could have challenged at the front.

>>76389825
The whole reason Merc is in F1 is to boost their brand. It defeats the purpose if another team beats them.

>>76389893
It's one of the best on the grid, how else do you think Alonso qualified 7th in Spain despite the shitty PU making them 20km/h slower at the end of the straight?

>>76392329
Honda give them free PUs and €100 million a year mate. McLaren don't pay a penny - they RECEIVE money.

Red bull was a pseudo works team when they won, as Renault proper get back into the groove of F1 I doubt they will be able to compete.

>Red bull was a pseudo works team when they won
How so? Surely they were customer just like everyone else. Remember the Renault team still existed in 2010.
>as Renault proper get back into the groove of F1 I doubt they will be able to compete.
Red Bull have a much bigger budget. Renault aren't spending that much. But I guess sponsorship has a role there, and now that RB aren't as successful, those contracts might be less lucrative. And Renault's improvement this year might attract more sponsors. But it really does depend on how much Renault decide to fund it really. If they wanted to they could probably blow Red Bull away. They could hire Newey, for instance. That would be funny.
>>
>>76394279
Dying Renault > Lotus Renault > lotus

Renault wasn't exactly in a strong position in 2010 and they weren't really in F1 as a works team in 2011.

It's not exactly clear cut which is why I said pseudo works team, RBR wasn't really a works team but it's not like there was a real works team at the time.

I have faith that Renault will be able to turn it around, they seem to be renewed in their dedication to racing. Time will tell.

>>
>>76394601

It's not for toothpastes.
Your shame should be drawn out and painful.
>>
>>76394421
I guess it's true that it's very rare for a customer team to win the world championship when their engine supplier is ALSO running a works team. In fact 2010 is the only example I can think of.

McLaren could still go with Mercedes though. In fact maybe Eddie Jordan's hunches from the conversations he had with Dieter Zetsche could be right, and Mercedes will go back to being a supplier instead of a team. Who knows.

>>76394440
That's just an estimate from 2015. Look at this which says what the teams spent in 2016.
>Red Bull: €252 million
>Renault: €176 million
http://www.grandprix247.com/2017/01/03/what-did-formula-1-teams-spend-in-2016/

But like I said it could be down to sponsorship differences. Red Bull and Renault themselves might be putting forward similar amounts for their teams. Red Bull obviously have a very strong sponsorship portfolio because they're seen as a successful team with a proven track record. The Aston Martin deal alone could be worth quite a bit. Whereas Renault have had to build a sponsorship portfolio from scratch, and obviously they don't have the success to convince big sponsors to jump aboard.

Indeed Eddie has been right about many things, and you've got to bear in mind that he says his source is Dietrich Zetsche himself, the head of Daimler.
>"Let's put it this way: I had a lengthy talk with [Daimler boss] Dr. Zetsche in Monaco. I told him about my ideas and thoughts and he didn't leave the impression these were wrong. But he obviously didn't go into detail."

Also I just found these earlier comments Eddie made, before Monaco:
