I've never been inhibited in any way wearing long ass shorts and stay plenty cool in them. They also keep the draft off the upper part of the leg better in cold weather. They also are better at blocking your skin from being exposed to dirty ass sticky ass benches. Short shorts look gay as fuck and are uncomfortable. I wore them on my tennis team in high school and hated every minute of it. I played basketball religiously all through my formative years and always wore long shorts.
