True but there would be anywhere. These people just have to face the fact that nowadays in Detroit there aren't many places you can do a race that don't look like absolute trash on TV. Just Detoilet. Long Beach, Toronto and St. Pete to an extent are part of the mainstay of road & street courses in Indycar and all of them usually can produce good races every now and then.

Detoilet, on the other hand, has never been liked in the long history of CART and now Indycar running there and has always been a meme track that has boring races.

Noted this a while back, but the camber on the tires in the 2018 aero photos are different. The flick is slightly less draggy on the oval kit as well.
Of note, I remember F1 cars not having a central support some years because the wing endplates were support, surely that's less draggy than the current solution.

Yeah, was unlikely that Reynard or Panoz was going to fabricate the aero on a Dallara monocoque.
Maybe if teams can fabricate their own spares, their costs will go down.
It's a step in the right direction, but I wish we had more than a sole chassis supplier.
So many have shuttered in the last 10 years, Lola, Swift, etc

>>
>>76378665
>Is the Haas F1 team popular over there?
No.

>Do you think having an American team has got more people interested in F1?
No.
We don't care if an American owns a backmarker team, especially if the drivers aren't American.

If an American were to somehow get on Ferrari or Mercedes and do well, or Haas were to somehow become a non-backmarker team AND hire American drivers, maybe then people here would care.

Also, the 2005 US Grand Prix was a total fiasco due to the shitty F1 politics getting in the way of running a proper race and that pretty much destroyed the reputation of F1 in the US.
>>
>>76378776
Alex Rossi should go back to F1. He came 2nd in GP2 which is pretty good. He could replace Marcus Ericsson, who is pretty shit. Ericsson's best season in GP2 was 6th.

>>76378821
Haas aren't a backmarker team, they're a midfield team.

2005 going ahead was basically due to Ferrari's influence and pressure. The other teams were willing to alter the track layout so the Michelin teams could run. But Ferrari are such cunts that they used their influence over the FIA to make sure that the race went ahead, so they would get an easy victory (since the only other two teams that could run against them were backmarker teams)

So as always, blame Ferrari, because they're the biggest cunts in F1 and always have been
>>
>>76378933

Yeah, there was talk that Grosjean would run one of the road courses (Watkins Glen or Sonoma) last year in the Cup series, but they chalked it up to lack of preparation time and being a distraction to their F1 goals, and I haven't heard of it since.

If he puts up a string of podiums* or top 10's it will reflect better.

*unlikely frankly, not on Conor's ability, but rather his competition and Foyt's team is going to prevent
>>
>>76381140
even top 10's are a tall order when you are on Foyt's team.

and it's not like the chassis or engine is to blame. this is a spec series. they have the same Dallara chassis and Chevrolet engine/aero kit as Penske and ECR. the only possible explanation is, Foyt's engineers are messing up.

Connor needs results to get out of his shitty team and go to a better one, but his shitty team makes it extra hard to get those results. it's a catch 22. he's in a pretty bad position.

Carlos Munoz is in the same position. I bet he's not happy for being traded to Foyt from Andretti for Takuma Sato.
>>
>>76381295
It's a combination of Foyt """""engineering""""" and the fact they do very little in the way of suspension/shock development.

A lot of people don't pay attention(because it's not that interesting) but suspension development is reasonably open.
Coyne' success can be attributed to offseason development in shocks and to a massive engineering shakeup.
>>
>>76381424
Foyt had a massive engineering shakeup too. it doesn't seem to be working for them.

it's a shame that a legend like AJ Foyt has a backmarker team year after year.
>>
>>76381424
>A lot of people don't pay attention(because it's not that interesting) but suspension development is reasonably open.

it is interesting. to me at least. I like knowing what makes these cars tick.

I heard next year, along with the new Dallara aero kit, teams are also going to be able to shop for a lot more of their own parts (besides engine, chassis, aero, and safety-related equipment)

a lot of these parts are mandated to be one specific supplier right now.
>>
>>76381498
Yeah, but if your shock development is 4 years behind there's only so much the engineers can do.
Foyt's team shakeup was primarily a driver shake up, they put on some different/more engineering staff.
>>
>>76381593
what're they doing for 4 years then???
I guess one team has to be last in the series just like one driver has to be last in the race but it's hard to see that happen

>>

>and it's not like the chassis or engine is to blame. this is a spec series. they have the same Dallara chassis and Chevrolet engine/aero kit as Penske and ECR. the only possible explanation is, Foyt's engineers are messing up.

Actually, it's more like Foyt have access to the same pool of parts and pieces that Team Penske & ECR can use, but all three of those teams are free to run whatever they want from that theoretical box of stuff. Same with all of the Honda runners. Granted, usually there's a specific set of aerodynamic parts and appendages that produce the ideal result, but sometimes teams will buck the trend and run whatever else they can find. (EX: Ganassi running 2015 aero kit parts every other Honda runner gave up on and ending up qualifying on pole.)

To me, Foyt have been screwing up as a team because they seem to go down blind alleyways on the car setup and a lot of the time can't find their way back from where they started. Case in point being last year when they would sometimes come out of the gate and be in the Top 5 in practice, but be lost in qualifying and further behind in the race regardless of driver. Combine that with a complete lack of suspension development and they're going to be stuck at the back of the grid for a while... Which makes me wonder how patient ABC Supply is, because 1 win in 15 years is pretty fucking pathetic IMO.

Q: I saw the images of the new IndyCar and to me, it looks like the engineers are going in a positive direction. The wings in road course/short oval configuration look huge to me! My first question is, isn't this new design supposed to be taking more advantage of ground effects, thus smaller wings? I'm worried that if they go back to Phoenix with those wings, they will still have a problem passing.
Tom, Bristol, Pa
RM: Ryan Hunter-Reay tested the 2018 kit bits at PIR last year and said it would definitely make things better, and moving the downforce form the top of the car to the bottom is supposedly the key. So be patient.

The cars were moving so fast around the banking that they averaged 236mph~ around TMS. The trap speeds were nearly 250mph.

So a safety concern has been looming in the back of my mind for the 2018 aero configuration.
Obviously F4 cars are held together with duct tape, but wasn't part of Billy Monger's accident due to the frame of the car sucking out past the rear?

Texas was repaved, it needed to be because of you recall last year there were these "weepers"(little pockets of water underneath the track) that continuously spout water.
I'm thinking that Rainguard(or Eddie Gossage) saw this as an opportunity to get the track surface water tight by contracting RainGuard for a cheaper than normal rate and in exchange giving them sponsorship.

The track should be much easier to dry this year.

I will say I hope we don't see a repeat of last year's ending in so far as the cars all being that close.

Feels good to be live gents.

Things to watch.
Only a handful of teams have tested the new configuration.
I don't think many, if any, of the teams have tested the brand new tire compound. The old one blistered after 10 laps on the new surface so they had to change the compound.
Aero configuration remains the same as last year.

That just looks unsafe, but I guess if it's only ferrying you to places and you weren't expecting a thrilling ride it might not be so bad.

Gabby Chavez is back with Harding racing this weekend.
For those who want a green, small, one off team to do well, there's no better choice in the paddock right now.
>>
>>76434813
I'll root for them just because goddamn we need more teams, and I think greenhorns getting some success would do a lot toward that
>>
>>76434840
I agree.
If Gabby could score a top ten finish, I'm sure the team would be tickled pink.
>>
>IMS radio saying Seabass is out for the season when he's repeatedly said he intends to make it back before the season ends

>>
Teams will be running very high Downforce at Texas.
The super speedways wings don't produce huge amounts of it anyways so teams pile on as much as they can.
Especially these first couple runs where teams are just trying to get comfortable.
>>
>>76434918
he MIGHT make it for the last race, for all intents and purposes he's out for the season
>>
>>76434918
I suspect we'll see Bourdais back by Sonoma.
He's a determined motherfucker if nothing else.
>>
So I thought the device that was placed in front of the camera on Tony Kanaan's car was another camera, but I see the team check it occasionally.
They also are using the same NTTdata sticker they used for Indy because it looks to be worn a bit.
>>
The Harding car is a pretty blue.
Not hard to miss it.

>>
>>76437822
yeah they should have been better, which is why Daly got stuck on Foyt and not a better team.

Foyt is like the team where it's your last chance to somehow make an impression and get on a better team otherwise you're out of IndyCar

Sato made it out of Foyt hell by some miracle but I don't think Daly is gonna be able to.
>>
>>76437871
Sato made it out due to Honda and Panasonic money.
Foyt was moving to Chevrolet, so Sato was out. Carlos was effectively sacrificed for it.
>>
Dixon pole inbound. He always tricks TK into having the shitty setup
>>
>>76437974
poor Carlos
I think he's a way better driver than Daly so maybe he has a chance to escape Foyt

Daly needs to somehow do a complete 180 or else he's probably done as a full time driver

Yeah, munoz was inconsistent at andretti, but always had pace on ovals. Foyt is just an absolute shantytown this year. Theyre missing something huge on setup.
>>
>>76442578
Should we be surprised given they changed to Chevrolet's engine and aero?
Ganassi Adapted to Honda, but they're #2 on the team power charts. Foyt(until this year) only had the accolade of "at least we're not Dale Coyne".

Dale seems to be tired of being just that guy who runs pay drivers who hope to use the opportunity to make an impression and get to a bigger team where they get paid. he's stepping up his game big time. he was even paying Bourdais before he got hurt.

Foyt needs to fix his team or just ducking sell it to someone who is gonna put in the effort to make it competitive. it's embarrassing to have a team this bad in the series desu
>>
>>76442694

Coyne had some consistent musical chair seasons in 2014-2015.

A quick bump and thought for the night.
I hope that the engine manufacturer that was in talks with Indycar was not Geely, the Chinese company that owns Volvo/Lotus etc.
They seemed to be the closest to actually signing something based on rumors prior to the articles put out.
>>
>>76450782
It was apparently Lamborghini according to the article now that it has been updated.
This seems way out of left field, but it does suggest interest in unusual places.
Lamborghini does not sell large amounts of vehicles in the US, like <1000.
Lamborghini would probably be better served doing a sports car works team rather than badging an engine not related. The company is owned by VW I believe.

None of the active drivers in the series will be testing the 2018 kit in the next few months.
There was a commnt from Robin Miller where he mentioned that Ryan Hunter Reay had tested the 2018 aero configuration at Pheonix last year already.
Jay Frye clarified by say that it was a new under tray+ the removal of the rear pods and a few other things that they actually tested.
This was observed at Mid Ohio in June 2016 when Josef Newgarden and others were testing without the rear pods.
