Sports Pope Mike Francesa saves listener on brink of suicide

Mike Francesa took a break from sports Tuesday afternoon to hear a caller’s heart-wrenching story of redemption.

“Mike from Yonkers” called into Francesa’s WFAN show to update the radio host on his recovery from a life-threatening car accident he first spoke about on the show last July. The caller credited Francesa with saving his life two years after the accident, which left him with lingering injuries and self-doubts, as well as an addiction to painkillers.

“You remember eight months ago when I called you, I was crying,” the other Mike told Francesa about that emotional call. “You know why, Mike? ‘Cause I was on opioids and I was gonna kill myself. I had a handful of pills and I was gonna take ’em and God sent you to me at that moment, and you took my mind off of what I was gonna do.”
