>pressure from behind
>need to pit to retain track position against their under cut
>if you do this you will be in traffic
>if you don't you will be giving up the race lead and the 1-2

What do you do? Pit or not?

Ferrari say pit as retaining the lead is important because you can't pass at Monaco.

>you pit and your other driver has found an extra 2s a lap
>you wanted to pit him straight away to keep second olace secured
>but it looks like he can take the lead if he can keep up this pace for 5 laps

What do you do?

Ferrari let him race and drive faster than Kimi. This led to the overcut and taking first.

Helio takes to the merge area to avoid the crash, and that dark area just behind him is a bump that gets him airborne - before Helio lands on the grass. You can see Helio catch air at about the 4:22 mark of this video:

When the fuck is Monaco being retired as a race? It's from a bygone era. The cars are too big and too fast for the track. The podium always look like those stupid steps down because you aren't allowed to stand higher than a monarch. It hasn't been a relevant race for decades.

Everyone knows Hamilton has wanted in at Ferrari from day one. Honestly its not a stretch for Kimi to retire and VET + HAM to do a straight swap. Merc need German drivers, Ferrari need media influencers like ALO and HAM, the two most popular drivers world wide.

Reuniting the bois from 07 for Alonso's final go-around is exactly the kinda thing Ferrari would do.

Reminder that Ferrari didn't DELIBERATELY give Vettel the better strategy. Once Max and Bottas pitted, they had two options:

Worst case scenario is that Vettel overcuts Kimi, keeping the 1-2. Ricciardo was too far behind to challenge.

Worst case scenario is that the undercut works and now you've lost the lead.

I don't understand why people are so salty about this Ferrari thing. I don't really see the motivation to dagger Kimi purposely. Them finishin 1-2 in either order wasn't gonna affect Hamilton's position, and being ahead of him was the goal for the weekend.

Its too dangerous to risk losing a 1-2 and fucking up team chemistry purposely trying to dice them up in the streets of monte carlo.

And regardless of all that. Really, why do people care? We are getting the best season since 2012. Thats all I care about. HAM is always better at the later tracks, so anyone who is a fan of the sport should want VET stretching his lead now so it gets close later in the year.

>>
>>76197955
The Hamilton fan club is in full defence force implying Sebastian doesn't deserve to be in first and doesn't deserve to be this year's WDC because he was gifted wins this season by his team.

Similar to how Bossberg didn't deserve to win last year because Lewlew used Hammer time too much and exploded his engine.

They are just desperately grasping to anything they can use to discredit the hard work Sebastian is putting in to win races.

Personally I like to be accurate when talking about what happens and our Swedish friend is bang on the money with what happened.
By pitting they guarantee they have one car ahead of Max and Bottas. When Kimi pitted they realised Sebastian had a lot more pace so they kept him out. When he eventually pitted he had driven faster than Kimi for long enough that he was now on the lead for the race. For some reason the Lewis defence force think driving faster than someone else for an extended period of time makes it so you don't deserve to win.

Bahrain 2017

Mercedes team radio to Bottas, while Bottas is leading:
>So remember, only just positive, it's going to be tight with Vettel, it's going to be tight with Vettel.

Mercedes supporting the driver with earned track position there.

Vettel pits early. Bottas still leading, until safety car - both Mercs pitted (Bottas first, Hamilton straight after). Now Vettel leads the race. And, after safety car, Vettel pulls away (we later learn that Bottas had overinflated tyres, which was hurting his pace).

ONLY WHEN IT WAS FULLY CLEAR THAT BOTTAS COULD NOT CATCH UP VETTEL DID MERCEDES CONSIDER THE OPTION OF TEAM ORDERS

THEY HAD GIVEN BOTTAS A VERY FAIR CHANCE TO WIN THE RACE BEFORE THIS WAS CLEAR

So then Mercedes give Bottas this message:
>So, please let Lewis go.
Then they give Lewis this message:
>He's been given the message.
BUT LEWIS RESPONDS TO LET BOTTAS HAVE HIS POSITION:
>No, he's picked up his pace, it should be okay.

Eventually they did switch, AFTER BOTTAS HAD ALREADY ATTACKED VETTEL SEVERAL TIMES, TRYING TO GET PAST.

Pretty clear that both Hamilton and Mercedes wanted to give Bottas a chance to win the race.

The facts will be lost on Vettel's cocksmokers, though.

Kimi won pole fair and square, so clearly he's still pretty good isn't he?

He didn't expect his team to stab him in the back with the pitstops - he said that he trusted the team's orders.

>Raikkonen said: "I was called in, and that's about it. It didn't work out very well for me, but apart from that, it doesn't matter, does it?
>Asked whether he knew why Ferrari had called him in at that time, he said: "I have no idea. They have reasons for why they do what they do. It is not up to me."

But stab him in the back they did.

If Ferrari were being impartial, then they would have told Kimi on the radio to hurry up. They didn't.

In Bahrain, Mercedes told Bottas to hurry up over the radio. They gave him a fair chance of winning.

>if you do this you will be in traffic
>if you don't you will be giving up the race lead and the 1-2
>What do you do? Pit or not?

You tell your leading driver to step on the gas. Ferrari didn't do this because they obviously don't want Kimi to win, and they want to give Seb the opportunity to win.

>you pit and your other driver has found an extra 2s a lap
>you wanted to pit him straight away to keep second olace secured
>but it looks like he can take the lead if he can keep up this pace for 5 laps
>What do you do?
>Ferrari let him race and drive faster than Kimi. This led to the overcut and taking first.

Exactly, if Ferrari had cared about fairness, they would tell Seb to pit straight away.

In Bahrain we saw Mercedes and Hamilton giving Bottas a fair crack to win the race himself. In Monaco we didn't see anything of the sort towards Kimi.

The media and the social media have been disgraceful towards His Greatness!

They must be so dissatisfied with their lives to laugh at His Greatness' misfortunes!

His Greatness doesn't laugh at others' misfortunes. As a matter of fact, His Greatness is too charismatic (the only charismatic driver on the grid, in fact) to be disliked in the first place.

Also, the media's obsessive speculation of His Greatness retiring is ridiculous and imbecilic.

'Cause what about all these children,
And all their children's children,
And why am I even wondering that today?

Maybe my contribution,
Could be as small as hoping,
That words could turn to birds, and birds would send my thoughts your way.

His Greatness motivated Mercedes with the quote "The battle is not over."
Tifosis and Vettel fanboys should be deeply concerned that His Greatness will overcome this adversity with the set-up issues to win the Driver's Championship, and the Constructor's Championship for Mercedes as well.

A disastrous weekend does not change the fact that His Greatness is the Best In The World and The Greatest of the Generation.
His Greatness is simply the fastest and the best wheel-to-wheel racer.

After all, Vettel will be remembered as the guy who ran away after being dominated in one teammate battle, because he only wants easy teammates, that are inconsistent, past their prime and willing to take the no.2 status.

At the end of the day, His Greatness does not have any problem facing Vettel, or anyone else, in a teammate battle

>In the laps before the pit stops he needed to make a gap to Sainz so he could pit and come out in front of him.
Then why didn't the team do what every team does for every driver in the history of F1. That is, radio him and tell him he needs to create that gap.

>In the fastest car in the field, with clear air, Kimi struggled to do lap times faster than Sainz was doing in a Toro Rosso.
How do you know that Kimi was "struggling" when he set 1.12 laps in qualifying? He beat Seb in both Q2 and Q3.

>>76198730
Or pit Seb first. Or tell Kimi that he needs to hurry up. OR bring in Seb straight after Kimi, to keep it fair.

Remember how Mercedes and Red Bull used to go to lengths to try and keep things fair.

Even in Bahrain, when Bottas has qualified on pole and lead the race in the beginning (before Vettel undercut him), Merc gave both of their drivers the same pit strategy, pitting them at the same time.

Ferrari clearly had no interest in keeping things fair - they stabbed the guy they consider their "number 2" in the back.

Watching the race replay, Pat Symonds comes on and quite clearly explains it wasn't a stitch up.

Raikkonen was dropping to 1:17:500s on the US and struggling, both cars were doing similar lap times yet Vettel as a bit quicker. He says the only course of action is put fresh tyres on Raikkonen and he quite explicitly sates that they couldn't have know that Vettel was capable of doing 1:16:100s - 1:15:500s after getting clear air, and he then says that if they pitted Vettel first Ricciardo would have been in the box seat to pull the entire rug out from underneath Ferrari as he was also lapping about a second quicker than Raikkonen as well.

Crofty, Ted and Sky narrative team can stir the pot all they want but people who actually know what it is to make those sorts of calls can point to this and say it wasn't intended, the person who made this work was Vettel by him actually putting in the lap times needed when it mattered.
>>
>>76198681
>Stoffel did the same thing while he was defending from Perez
Bully hit the wall there as well, so it definitely seems like there was a lack of grip in turn 1. But it's one thing to do it in race conditions, another to do it under safety car.

>>76198730
Kimi was about to catch up to Ericsson right before he pitted. Sure he came out behind Pascal and Button, but he was ahead of Bottas and Max which was all that mattered. Vettel got lucky that Ericsson pitted just as he caught up to him.

>People who said Ferrari's strategy was NOT a deliberate plan to let Vettel win:
>Hamilton
But Hamilton literally said that Ferrari have obviously picked a favourite? And that there's no way the cars would switch like that without it being intentional?

>"If Kimi wanted to win then from lap 25 he should have been lapping in the 1:15s.
Why wasn't Kimi told that him being undercut was a risk? Back in Bahrain, Mercedes warned Bottas who was leading at the time:

>So remember, only just positive, it's going to be tight with Vettel, it's going to be tight with Vettel
https://youtu.be/CsL6Y_-vmtQ?t=1m6s

They warned him. They were telling him to pick up the pace. Did Kimi get such a warning? Given his post-race comments, it doesn't seem that he did:

>Raikkonen said: "I was called in, and that's about it"
>Asked whether he knew why Ferrari had called him in at that time, he said: "I have no idea. They have reasons for why they do what they do. It is not up to me."
>"We are a team and if you don't believe what you have been told then it will get very complicated at some point," Raikkonen said.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/40079221

That last point is critical. He believed the team. He trusted them. They failed him.

If the team had radioed him then it would be the first thing they would say after the race - "we radioed him, we told him to speed up, but he didn't!"

Kimi would have mentioned it too. Instead, he said the he had "no idea" why Ferrari pitted him when they did. It suggests they never gave him any warning.

>>76200305
You don't know the meaning of the words "team orders" do you?

Telling your leading driver that he should speed up in order to keep the leading position is NOT team orders. "Team orders", in F1, almost always refers to the team ordering the drivers to switch positions. Do I seriously have to explain this to you?

Looked to me like Kimi wasn't able to control the race from the front, Seb had gotten inside of 2 seconds as their pit delta approached, Seb then put in a series of WDC sectors after Kimi pitted and then just drove off into the distance after his stop.

It almost seemed as if Kimi got his pole because Seb made a mistake in the second sector on his flyer. What is clear is that Kimi was out driven in the race.

I love Kimi, but Sebastian is just a bit better at this point in their careers and that is okay too.

Forza Ferrari!

Kimi was faster in both Q2 AND Q3.

Also let's remember that Max was viciously complaining to Red Bull for his treatment - exactly the same as Kimi gained from Ferrari.

Max and Kimi both out-qualified their teammates, they had gained track position, and we all know that's incredibly important in Monaco. It's perfectly understandable that they are both pissed off at their teams fucking them over in the pit stops.

>You think that Kimi doesn't understand that under/overcutting exists, and that it's critical to push after a pit stop.
I was actually talking about the idea of pushing BEFORE the pit stop - I'm saying that the team should have radioed him and asked him to pick up the pace, to fend off from an undercut.

Because AFTER the pit stop, he was in traffic. So obviously he couldn't push immediately could he?

Raikkonen's time on his out lap was 1:19.518, and Vettel's was 1:18.650. Almost a whole second difference, because Kimi was stuck behind a McLaren for ages, and then behind a Sauber as well. Whereas Vettel had FREE AIR ahead of him.

>You assume the team doesn't remind him of this based on some very weak evidence.
You're saying it's weak evidence that we never heard a radio message of the team telling him to speed up, and that neither Kimi nor the team mentioned any such instruction after the race, and that Kimi said he had "no idea" why he was asked to pit when he was? Where's your "strong evidence" to suggest that he received such an instruction?

You want them to introduce mandatory rounded noses? Then they'd all basically be the same. I think the "thumb" noses look absolutely fine, and it's good that they allow different teams to take different approaches.

I mean most of the time the pictures are from Japan and she works for Red Bull and Toyota who send her around. For example this weekend she was a Toyota race queen at Nurburgring and the wife's son of Eric picture was taken when he was in Jap F3.

The better question is how did she afford all the race tickets. She has been to at least every Japanese GP since 06 and every Singapore GP since 08.
In addition she regularly rocks up at Suzuka, Fuji and other rounds of Super Formula and SuperGT. She isn't a Toyota race queen then, she is just a fan.

Her parents must have been into motorsport but I've never really seen her father, I found out that her mum did some motocross when she was younger.
She has family in Dubai (Cousin) so I can only assume her dad works out of there, pays for everything and likes to keep shit private.

Seb lost time in sector 2 of Q3 costing him the pole position, he claimed he got too greedy, that was reflected on what was played out on live timing.

I'm not sure how new you are to F1 but success isn't measured by one single sector time in a given qualifying session. You may want to have a look at the drivers stats to better understand why Vettel is considered a better driver or you can pay better attention to the race broadcasts.

he'll go to Toto and do some [autistic screeching], threatening to leave the team if he doesn't order Bottas to crash into Vettel

There 3 blown engines as well so he has no idea what he is talking about.
All 3 were Honda.

Add that to the 8 Honda engine failures in practice and Honda isn't doing so great with reliability even in Indycar.

He's obviously obsessed with it, he immediately started making excuses that Ferrari Will use team orders after Merc made Bottas pull over for him. Now he's at it again accusing Ferrari of sabotaging Kimi's race.

He is so transparent its funny. He's very concerned about his own teams orders and how they will be perceived, much like his insecurity about his receding hairline.

1. The drivers were obviously cycled. That doesn't mean team orders made Kimi move over but Vettel was put on the better strategy.
2. Kimi admitted to not being interested in pursuing P1 after Vettel had passed him because any pass would have risked both cars, hence the +10 s gap before the safety car.
3. The safety car gave Kimi every chance to mount an offensive against Vettel if he really wanted P1, but he sat in 2nd.
Kimi lost the race and Vettel won. Kimi got fucked but the safety car gave him the chance to unfuck himself and he didn't take it. It's Kimi's loss.

I think their road cars are still considered pretty reliable. But go and have a look at some stats and reviews.

But I think their F1 failures have really shown that the Jap way, of closing yourself off for the honour of glorious Nippon, is fucking stupid. Mercedes and Renault and Ferrari cross-hire from each other, so they've got cross-fertilisation of ideas.

Jap road car engines are generally reliable and shit though, because those guys are real fucking hard workers. And I guess they play things pretty safe, and they're very methodical.

Look at stats and shit.

His engineer should have given him better advice - or maybe he just wasn't listening to it. Because it sounded like he didn't really have a fucking clue what the strategy was.

>>76209168
Haha. You reckon that will happen? It could do, I will admit. Then I guess Carlos Sainz would probably take the RBR seat.

This is assuming Vettel doesn't veto RIC though.
>>
>>76209168
He has a RBR contract until the end of next year. And they are pretty water tight.

Also there is no way Vettel wouldn't veto him.

Odds of him being at Ferrari would be similar to his odds of winning this year.

>>76209226
It was pretty reactive so I think the engineer probably told him who had pitted and that an undercut was a possibility. He would have ignored this like he does for most messages like that and kept plodding along. Then the engineer told him to box.
There is no way the engineer just randomly without warning told him to box but it wouldn't be a first if that did happen.

If Vettel somehow failed to secure the WDC, I could see Ferrari just going full ITALIA mode again and dropping him rather than Kimi.

>>76209536
Ricciardo is hungry for a title. He's made that very clear last year. I doubt he doesn't have some sort of release clause like Vettel in 2014.

Do you guys reckon Red Bull will have a shot at a championship anytime soon?

I think with all engine suppliers basically having their own works teams now, and Renault slowly catching up to them in terms of development, I think Red Bull are far from dominating a couple of seasons in a row anytime soon.

Vettel won the Championship 4 times in a row, of course he could make a demand for a release clause if the car suddenly became shit. Ricciardo has nothing to show for so he's really not in a position of power to demand something like that. And Red Bull's contracts are pretty cutthroat.

How do you know this? You're making a big assumption there. Kimi did not say anything about this afterwards, did he? And crucially, neither did the team. You would have thought that the team would point that out, because it would strengthen their defence.

>He would have ignored this like he does for most messages like that and kept plodding along.
I think he genuinely wanted to win that race, you could see his disappointment at the end, and I believe he would have listened to an important message about pit strategy. You could be right, but like I say, it seems to me that the team would point this out, in their defence, in the post-race interviews.

>There is no way the engineer just randomly without warning told him to box but it wouldn't be a first if that did happen.
I think that is what happened. I guess the only way to know for certain is if we can hear the entire radio communication.

Every driver who looks invincible can get taken down a peg - we've seen it with Hamilton (in 2016), Alonso (in 2007) and Schumacher (in his comeback). So yes I guess you are right.

Another thing. Here's an article that dismantles Ferrari's excuses one by one. Enjoy.

>This is where Ferrari's strategy call becomes murky. Neither Verstappen nor Bottas showed particularly impressive pace on their new tyres and it would only be a couple of laps before they got bottled up behind Carlos Sainz, who had yet to pit in his Toro Rosso. Ferrari could argue that it wasn't worth the risk and that's why Raikkonen was told to come into the pits one lap after Bottas, but in his post-race quotes Arrivabene made no mention of the threat from Bottas and instead said Raikkonen pitted on a pre-planned lap.

>Vettel did mention Bottas in the post-race press conference, claiming he was told that the Mercedes was lapping in the 1:16.1s. If that had been the case then Raikkonen's pit call would have been understandable, but the reality was that the Mercedes first four laps out of the pits were a 1:19.431, a 1:17.783, a 1:17.164 and a 1:18.914. At no point in the race -- even in the closing stages on low fuel -- did Bottas' lap times dip below a 1:16.5.

Even if you say all the things that happened to make the conspiracy work are true you end up with this one fact that debunks it that has to be true for it to work.

Vettel was faster than Kimi. If Vettel wasn't faster he doesn't get the over cut done. If he is faster he deserves to win doesn't he? Or do slower drivers deserve to win for some crazy reason?

Kimi had great qualy pace, Vettel had great race pace setting purple sectors as soon as he was free of Kimi.

The series of events:
>2 competitively fast cars behind us pitted for fresh tyres
>if we don't cover them off they could undercut us
>What do we do we don't want to lose the lead
>Kimi box this lap

It was the right call at the time and they would have done it to whoever was in the front at the time. Imagine if they didn't box and the undercut worked.
>>
>>76212635
>If Ferrari had really been worried about the threat from Bottas they would have pitted Vettel the lap after Raikkonen, ensuring the German came out of the pits ahead of the Mercedes and in a safe second place. But now another potential threat was emerging from Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, who had started setting low 1:16s in clear air. It was at this point that Vettel claims he got the message that Bottas was also in the 1:16s and so he started to push and set a series of increasingly quick laps, finally ending up in the low 1:15s.

>Raikkonen wasn't hanging around either, but the disadvantage of the traffic on his outlap meant that at the end of lap 39 Vettel had the magic 21s gap over his teammate and pitted accordingly. Vettel had a stationary time 0.3s shorter than Raikkonen five laps earlier and exited the pits 1.115s ahead of his teammate at the first timing loop following Sainte Devote.

>There's no doubting that Vettel's raw pace between Raikkonen's pit stop and his own had been impressive. On ultra-soft tyres with over 40 laps of use (including qualifying), he was able to set the times he needed to win. But to the watching world, Raikkonen had been fighting Vettel's attack with one hand tied behind his back. The timing of both pit stops smacked of favouritism.

>Had Vettel been driving for a rival team, Raikkonen surely would have been allowed to stay out longer to build up the margin he needed over Wehrlein, and in the process he would have been able to control the pace of Vettel at a crucial point of the race. Looking at it that way, it's hard to say Raikkonen lost the Monaco Grand Prix on anything other than strategy. His pace in clear air was not a match for Vettel, but it wasn't bad either. The difference was track position and Raikkonen's was clearly sacrificed when he pitted from the lead.

>just look at the facts

You need to look at the facts at the time they became available. You don't know the pace of a car on lap 38 when you are all on lap 37.
Take away the hindsight. Anyone can say "you should have done this" after the fact with every bit of information available.

>Bottas pits
>worried about the undercut the race leader pits to stop the undercut
>now with the fresh tyres lap data available it is clear that the undercut wasn't an actual threat, so they leave the new race leader out who is no setting purple sectors in clear air

If you believe this is what happened then Ferrari are the most ruthless and cuntish team on the entire planet. Any other team would radio their driver and say "we need you to pick up the pace - if you can't then we'll have to bring you in, and you'll hit traffic on the way out".

If Ferrari SERIOUSLY made that decision on the basis of PACE, *BEHIND KIMI'S BACK*, then they are in a completely different league of shittiness compared to anything that Mercedes or anyone else have ever done.

>>
>>76213544
>>76213774
Oh wait no sorry I misunderstood you - I thought you were saying that they pitted Kimi AFTER his pace was dropping. But you're saying his pace dropped after he was pitted.

But your picture still paints Ferrari as cunts. Because you're saying that Ferrari knew immediately after pitting Kimi that the supersofts had very good pace - and yet they left Vettel out there anyway. Knowing FULL WELL that Seb was now overcutting Kimi. They were perfectly fine for that to happen - because they wanted it to happen, FUCKING OBVIOUSLY. If they cared about supporting Kimi (like Mercedes cared about supporting their pole winner Bottas in Bahrain - until he had lost the lead, that is), then they would have told Seb to pit straight away.

As the article says:
>If Ferrari had really been worried about the threat from Bottas they would have pitted Vettel the lap after Raikkonen, ensuring the German came out of the pits ahead of the Mercedes and in a safe second place.
