It's to protect face bones or muscles

He broke his nose. Mask helps protect the nose from knocks during a game. Same reason other players wear it (it might also be used for other facial injuries but I think broken noses are most common).

You'd be surprised how easy it is to get an elbow to the face when tussling for the ball.

Nobody cared who he was until he put on the mask.
