The absolute state of that group B

They may as well get rid of the group stages altogether now. When was the last time a first seed didn't qualify?
>>
>>76106873
are you literally about 15 years old?

deportivo won la liga in 2000 and were constantly at the top of the table around the late 90s and early 2000s.

they got to the CL semi-finals in 2004
>>

but they were back then.

there would be different teams in it these days.. if you took the teams from this years last 16, and stuck to the constraints that teams from the same country cant be together, it would look something like this

Barcelona, Man City, Monaco, Napoli
Real Madrid, Benfica, Bayern Munich, Arsenal
Atletico, Dortmund, Leicester, Porto
PSG, Sevilla, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen

would be pretty competitive IMO.
>>
>>76107155
how many years do you think it'll take before barcelona becomes arsenal-tier again? will i get to witness this in my life?

This.

It's exactly why i say football comes and goes in cycles.

Heck in the 90's Real Madrid were shite too
>>

feels like it was more exiciting back. there was less of a gap between the top clubs and everyone else.

globalisation has just led to super clubs getting bigger and bigger and more dominant. smaller clubs don't have a chance now.

now with the 6 super clubs in england, and only 4 champions league places it won't be long until the champions league is revamped again so suit the superclubs. or some sort of european super league is established. i'll give it 5 years max
>>
>>76107199
Nah, I remember it was there since at least the 2000-01 season
>>
>>76107162
the outcome would be the same, juve played endless finals during the 90s and early 2000s, favourites would still make it

>>76107170
I don't know. As a barça fan i think it's starting basically because there isnt a good manager. I thought the same when Luis Enrique was hired though.

But Guardiola years changed it all, not only for Barça but for Halal too.

Now the press stays away from the team, back then was a constant attack, there's some kind of style that you can always go to if something fails and fans are much less prompted to ask to sack everyone. Customers around the world allow to have more money. And there's Messi

It affected Halal too because they had bad years in terms of politics and that was so butthurt that they ended up spending a billion on a team. Back then when one was winning, the other one was shit, now are both fighting at the same time and it looks like it will be like that for a few years.
>>
>>76107170
never, ever.

the big clubs are too powerful.

barcelona finished 6th in 2003.

something like that will, never, ever, ever, ever happen again.
>>
>>76107270
I would like to see a European Super League.

But things aren't that bad, Leicester unironically won our league last year, and Red Bull came 2nd in Germany
>>
>>76107170

>>
>>76107233
not sure about bayern since i've never really followed bundesliga or them in particular, but out of all the giants of football i would say that real madrid is the only team that was always at a high level. sure, they constantly failed in UCL from 2002 till 2014 but they've always been relevant in the league and pretty decent in europe. juve got relegated, lpool biggest achievement in last years is 2nd in the league and an UEL final, milan is absolute shit since they last won the cl, man united has about 3?4? seasons being shit.
can't really see real turning that bad anytime soon. also can't see barca turning that bad, but it's more likely to happen.
>>
>>76107032
>I'm old because I remember Alan Shearer and Roy Makaay xD

Cute. I bet you never watched Eric Cantona live.
>>
>>76107317
Would you say that after Messi's "era" is done barca will fall into a man united-like pit since Ferguson left?
I'm a Real fan(or customer, call me whatever the fuck you like) and can't really say I'm not biased but I've always felt like >we always have been great and barca only started their dominance since pep and messi
>>
>>76107324
isn't man united a big enough club then? i'd say they're even bigger in some areas than barca yet they're still shit since ferguson left
>>
>>76107032
Just because someone started following football seriously in the last few years doesn't make them automatically underage
>>
>>76107354
All in all its all down to the players and management.

If Ronaldo had gone to Real and not been a success, I don't think they'd be at the level they are now. In the same way once BBBC retire for Juve and Allegri moves on , if a club like AC get the right investment they could take they're spot, Liverpool have one of the best young managers in the world atm, but will they sign an Aubameyang or a Nathan Redmond.. United, they're in a bad spell but still winning things, Mourinho feeds off negative energy, can they get the players in attack to supplement they're Stoic defending.

These are the factors that will dictate who's on top, there's alot of randomness
>>
>>76107354
>not sure about bayern
They ended up playing in the Europa League in 2008

>Real Madrid
>pretty decent in europe
I guess so, aside from their six consecutive years getting eliminated in the round of 16.
>>
>>76107395
Messi will create some sort of depression, who knows what player will be there and what condition. 10 years ago Barrça thought they were going to dominate for years with ronaldino, 2 years later he was sacked and gave his number to a 19yo kid that half of the world didnt know and signed a coach with no experience at all that everyone thought that was going to be sacked in less than a mont. So you can't say things for sure.

Halal won more trophies, was way more succesful in the domestic league during the 50-70 era with no doubt. But it started to change back then. What Barça has and Halal doesnt is the hability of destroy itself after winning something.

But if you are less than 30 you've seen more years of Barça dominance than Halals.
>>
>>76107354

The german tap seems to be running dry with absolue shit like Rode being brought in
>>
>>76107457
Ronaldo played a big part in Real's latest succes, but I'd say not as big as Messi did in Barca's last 10 years.
Juve needs to figure out their defense for the next seasons since it'll be pretty tough after BBBC retires, yes. I'd watch Serie A constantly if AC would get to their prime level, man I miss them.
>>76107460
Yeah had no idea about Bayern, my point stands including them.
As for Real's six consecutive eliminations in RO16, I'd say that's still better than not even making the groups or finishing third. That combined with somehow domestic succes it's pretty okay for a bad spawn of time.
>>
>>76107378
no obviously not.

i'd kill myself if i was a 30 year old and still posting on 4chan.
>>
>>76107484
>a 19yo kid that half of the world didnt know
Come on, everyone knew who Messi was after the 2007 season where he copied both of Maradona's most iconic goals and after his hat-trick against Real in that season.
>>
>>76107521
Me too, really liked AC.

Roma are looking pretty good in Serie A atm tho
>>
>>76107531
So then don't pull the oldfag card next time.
>>
>>76107550

They've been absolute shit in Europe. Would expect more from Napoli desu
>>
>>76107484
Messi is kind of a different story than Ronaldinho. He played for what, 5 years? He had a great input in barca's succes but with Messi it's a whole new thing. He started and will probably end his career at barca. The team that made Pep famous was purely amazing. That's why I'm thinking it may kind of collapse when he's done with football/barca.
I'm 24. Yeah, it's been a few painfull years to be a Real fan.

Football is changing so much. Its such a physical game now.

That's the reason you don't see many number 10's like there were back then, players like Rui Costa, Aimar, Sneijder, Kaka etc. They just don't have the space to play in
>>
>>76107582
What i meant was that expectations or what i can think, specially being as pessimist as >we are, doesn't matter because there's always something.

I guess so, but at the moment it was terrible for Real especially since most of the other "greats" (Man Utd, Liverpool, Milan, Inter, Barcelona and Arsenal) were all doing really well in Europe.

Nobody could have foreseen most of those teams going to shit and our current era of Real/Barcelona/Bayern (and I guess now Juve)

the difference is i don't expose myself ignorant buffoon, because i already know plenty about the eras i wasnt old enough to watch.

>>
>>76107697
Still much faster and technical than it used to be than say in the 80s - muddy pitches with everyone kicking the shit out of each other.

Deep lying midfielder becoming a specialised role more and more probably has a lot to do with the lack of classic number 10s. Look at how Kante completely shuts down anybody for example.

Rubin Kazan beat Barcelona, Bremen beat Juventus. One result doesn't disguise the fact you were shit.
