In a little over 2 hours we'll get to see the 2018 Road/street course aero.
>Why should I care?
Because they've actively tried to design it with form and function in mind. The will take design cues from CART and Champ Car, while the function takes a page out of champ car's book, whereby it has a heavy focus on undertray downforce and clean air on top.

Should look pretty 2pm ET is when we'll see it. Hoping for good things.

In the future this may also lead to teams editing small areas of the cars themselves, but that's optimistic, let's just hope for a pretty car first.

Carb Day(Saturday I think?), it's just an hour session for install laps and making sure equipment is ready for Race day.
Otherwise we're prepped for Sunday.

The main things to follow now are just drivers on the media tour, technical talk, and history courtesy of Robin Miller(though he's always a bit hazy) and Marshall Pruett.
Donald Davison is another guy who knows his Indy 500 history unbelievably well.

For those bored, here's the IMS Museum tour with Robin and Marshall. AJ Foyt is a living legend, I'm not sure if there's another driver who has ever won as many races if we add all his Indycar, Sprint, Midget, NASCAR, Le Mans wins together.
That's what the museum displays are about lots of cool old cars and history here.

The big difference between F1 and Indy is that in F1 they just drive the cars, while in Indy, they have to actually race.

That's not a hit on the F1 drivers, but they're just caught in a shit series that basically wastes any talent they may have by being car dependent, rather than driver skill dependent. Other series are much more reliant on driver skill, which is why F1 is shit tier when it comes to actual racing.
>>

F1 can have great racing and it had so the last race e.g., but I will admit that F1 has a lack of parity when it comes to cars and that that is not a good thing (for racing or to compare drivers).

>F1 has a lack of parity when it comes to cars and that that is not a good thing (for racing or to compare drivers).

Agree 100%

The race is pretty much irrelevant compared to the qualification runs in F1, as the car starting in P1 or P2 is going to win more than 90% of the time, barring collisions or mechanical defects. So what's the point?

F1 should just stick with the manufacturing series mantra, eliminate the race day, and just stick with single car, single lap, all out runs for time, in an elimination format like downhill skiing, as the "races" are just a waste of time and boring as fuck to watch.
>>
>>76105733
>being proud of the fact that the race outcomes in his series are random
>>
>>76105780
They wouldn't be so random if Indycar opened the pits under caution and installed a speed limit under yellow.
>>
>>76105780

It's not "random", it's based on who drives better during quali and the race, as opposed to driving the same superior car vs. outmatched cars every single "race".

I don't see how F1 "champions" can live with themselves, knowing that the only reason they won is because they didn't get stuck with the shit cars like 75% of the rest of the drivers.

Not completely true though. Senna has one of the best pole averages and didn't win a third of those races in which he got pole

>inb4 that was 500 years ago!
Schumacher has a few more pole positions than senna and won twice as many races

>inb4 best car!
sometimes that happens, sometimes in f1 a car can be too good, which is what happened between 2001 and 2004 with Ferrari, or what happenened between 2014 and 2016 with Mercedes. Most of the times though, like this season, it isn't the case.

>It's not "random", it's based on who drives better during quali and the race, as opposed to driving the same superior car vs. outmatched cars every single "race".

Maybe, but you also have to consider driver skills. Every driver takes a turn differently, some can do it fast and nicely, some others can make mistakes and be slow. Now consider that in a F1 track that has 20 different curves and compare it to turnleft where you have 4 curves and all are exactly the same, drivers are less likely to make mistakes
>>
casual watcher here...

wtf Alonso qualified 5th?

dear god if he wins the fucking thing that'll be some shit

talk about making waves in both indycar and f1. especially in indycar. how do you cope with an outsider waltzing in and winning your biggest event? that would surely sting. and in f1, it would be perfectly clear that he only smells like shit cause he drives in a car made of shit.

>Not completely true though.

Yea, it's completely true.

>Now consider that in a F1 track that has 20 different curves

Which means the disparity between cars is going to be magnified simply due to the fact that the car with more horsepower, torque, and better braking will be able to outclass every other car 20 times per lap.

>turnleft where you have 4 curves and all are exactly the same, drivers are less likely to make mistakes

That's not true at all, simply due to the fact that they're always taking those turns at max speed and at the limit of traction, while driving an aerodynamic brick....in traffic. Turnleft drivers use the draft to get their competitors loose during the curves in order to make a pass, sending them up the track. They can't do that in F1.

Turnleft can't exploit acceleration and braking advantages the way F1 can, due to the fact that the draft serves as somewhat of an equalizer. In oval racing 2, or more slower cars working together in the draft are faster than any faster car working alone, or caught outside the draft. The way the drivers use the draft to gain, and hold, positions, is what makes oval racing so fun to watch, as it's all about driver vs. driver as opposed to the driver vs. the track of F1.

Regardless, the best teams in Indy, and turnleft, can't dominate the field the way the top teams in F1 can, which makes for actual racing.
>>
>>76106604
>that would surely sting

That would be bad ass, and would clearly demonstrate how shit F1 parity among teams is, since there the dude can't even get points.

I want to see another dude win the triple crown, so that means either JPM has to get off his fat ass and get on a Le Mans team, or Lonzo has to win and then do Lemans.
>>
>>76106771
>>76106862

I was thinking in terms of the inner circle of indycar, the pride of the drivers and teams. maybe sting isn't the right word. what I do know is that if I were a driver or a pro in any other sport for that matter, I wouldn't view alonso the same as a fellow driver. by that i mean losing to other drivers always sucks, but losing to a driver from an outside series really fucking sucks.
>>
>>76107112
Indycar pulled out all stops to get him here once it became an "idea" from the Mclaren side. If they didn't want him to be come they could have simply said "sorry, we only have a limited engine supply". If they didn't want him to be competitive they wouldn't have convinced Stefan Wilson to leave his Andretti seat with a Honda engine.

For the drivers, I have to assume they desire this challenge, to compete against one of the best in the world. Losing to a 2xWDC wouldn't hurt any worse than losing to a rookie or anyone else for that matter.
>>
>>76107228
I can understand that. I'm definitely certain his participation is a great thing for Indycar. It definitely has people talking.

AJ calls Zach Veach a 14 year old, Calls his Lola Cosworth a tub of shit over the PA to 100,000 people, and many more hilarious shenanigans.
AJ Foyt has a very particular way of speaking, he's an honest man who has never held anything back, but he has never had to either. AJ has the winningest career in all of racing(to my knowledge).

>>
>>76119816
I didn't say anything about NASCAR.
I just want it to matter where a driver starts and have the results of the race be an aggregate of how well the driver did during it.
By closing the pits it allows weak driver to be up front based entirely on luck of when the cautions come out and when everyone pitted.

If Indycar opened the pits under caution and installed a speed limiter for safety, then there would be none of this "LOLRANDOM" factor during the races that shuffles the order and can assfuck drivers who were up front and dominating all day.

LUCK SHOULD NOT PLAY A FACTOR IN A RACE WHEN THERE ARE ALTERNATIVE TRIED AND TRUE OPTIONS.

You can't strategize for cautions.
That has nothing to do with fuel and tire strategy, in fact it completely throws both of those things out the fucking window.

Indycar will be testing at Road America June 14th, a little over a week ahead of the race a scheduled for June 25th.
For those who need an example of this massive, beautiful track and facility. Indycar raced there last year to much fanfare.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVyKkIDslB4
Lots of elevation changes and a real classic course.
2018 may see the cars even faster around the track thanks to the decreased drag. Road America favours a low drag, high HP setup.
>>
>>76120430
You're fucking retarded, Rossi's strategy was based on luck, were it not for cautions he would have never made that fuel number and would have needed up 20th or worse.
The problem isn't as bad on ovals, especially Indy, but it is immediately apparent on Road/Street Courses.
There's no reason Bourdais, who started dead last and passed almost no one, should have been gifted the lead in St. Petersburg. It had nothing to do with strategy and everything to do with luck since pits aren't opened under yellow.
Read and educate yourself:

>>
keeping the pits open these days wouldn't change the outcome very much since the top 15 are usually running nose to tail all race anyway and would enter the pits at the same time
>>
>>76120493
>won't change the outcome that much
>except for the position lottery when a caution comes out where leaders are now in 14th position and guys who were 17th inherit the lead
>>
>>76120507
I assume you mean when a leader pits under green but then a yellow comes out when he is in the pits? The position swap would still occur if you left the pits open and everyone ran a standard yellow speed like the old days. Look on youtube for past 500s and it happened. Keeping the pits open won't change the physical fact that you would lose more time in the pits under green while the others pit under yellow. The only difference is that they weren't stuck behind the pace car.
>>
CUTE!
>>
>>76120540
Actually closed pits benefits those who have already pitted under green, it's how Bourdais leap frogged everyone except Simon Pagenaud because they pitted earlier under green.
When guys are doing very well on fuel and leading, they want to run as many laps as possible, but if a yellow comes out during the end of their stint they will be forced to pit, this allows everyone who already pitted under green to casually go around them.

Again, it's a much bigger problem on road and street courses.

So Sebastian Bourdais crash recorded a force of 113G's.
That's an unbelievable amount of force to survive. The car mitigated enough of that force that he survived with no permanent damage, a fractured pelvis, and a broken right hip.
Is there any other vehicle in any series that could mitigate that kind of force?
The SAFER barrier is obviously a large factor too.
Despite everything, stock cars tend to shred themselves, they release a lot of energy, but anytime I see a big crash there I worry for their safety. Those cars have a lot less carbon and other materials that Indycars are made of.
F1 cars use the same materials, but less of it. It's rare for those cars to see a big impact like we see here.
>>
>>76121426
>The car mitigated enough of that force
The car and the steel and foam energy reduction barrier combined actually dissipated that amount of kinetic energy allowing him to survive

>>
>>76121563
I'm interested in the exact numbers

>>
>>76121638
Maybe they'll allow NBCSN or Indycar Radio's broadcasters to to call it

Alternative, but very unlikely angle. ABC still wants the 500 and is going to hire competent broadcasters for the contract year in an effort to keep the 500 on their channel.(I don't condone stupid speculation like this, it is still a sin, but I partake in it)

On other option is that ABC broadcasts the race... with no one in the booth.
>>
>>76121648
I'm not even close to smart enough.
There's probably variables that someone who could answer that would need to know that we don't have.

So some of you may have noticed a general trend, but Robin Miller and Marshall Pruett tend to be the go-to for Indycar news.
They figured out Alonso was coming over before news was even allowed to be made public, but out of respect for Indycar they did not let it become public, they have a good standing.

Anyways, the two guys have recently done weekly reviews of Indycar news.
This week they'll talk about the performance potential of the 2018 kit(Marshall was an engineer) amongst other things.
Worth a listen.

>>76119640
Its like f1 except.

F1 cars produce 700hp + 150 from the electic recovery thing. Indy produces 780ish.

Indy cars have aero kits for ovals and road races where F1 has only road races. On the oval kits they can get a top speed over 230 mph where F1 probably gets 200ish.

F1 cars have way way better breaks and mildly better accleration.

According to Honda the indy car testing they did would be middle of the pack in an F1 race but never competitive.

Indycars have no power steering but does have roll bars and weight adjustments. F1 has every assisst in the book.

indy raicng is cheap roughly 1 million a car where F1 can cost 10 milllion.

Both suffer from the same problems. Its hard to get manufacturers as the tech isn't really easy to translate into a commerical vehicle unlike GT or Formula 1.

Indy is good stuff but very different from nascar. Nascar is just pure muscle and crashing. Indy is F1 with a smaller budget and higher top speed.
Indy has competition where as F1 has a constructor aspect which makes the races....kind of dull.
>>
>>76130835
F1 engines are nearing 1000hp, well above 750. Also they reach 230mph.

*yawn* Ah, good morning Amerifats!

Are we ready to see Fastnando Alonsfast right at the very top of the speed charts again today?

It must be awfully embarrassing to see one of Europe's best come over to America and immediately start destroying the competition on his very first attempt.

Oh yes, didn't I mention? This is Alonsfast's very first race on an oval! The very first one! America's fastest driver, who is starting just one row in front of Alonsfast, a mere 0.3mph faster in qualifying, has been racing at Indianapolis for *pffft* fifteen years!

Don't worry, the Coca Cola 600 will be on later on, and no Europeans want to take part in that, so you'll be guaranteed an American victory on Sunday!

*It was Chevrolet's Aero kit tested at COTA in late 2014.
Those times were being compared to 2014 F1 Qualifying.

The Chevrolet Aero kit as it was originally envisioned would have put it "mid-pack" in F1 qualifying.
It may have looked like the homer mobile, but the thing was quick and producing 8000+lbs of downforce which was absolutely insane.

Naturally we have to put things in perspective, the Indycar that year was carrying more speed through the corners, but the F1 cars had a weight and power advantage allowing them to accelerate and brake faster.
As of 2017 F1 regs they are undoubtedly carrying as much or more speed than the original Chevy aero kit thanks to huge tires and more DF(than F1 2014).

Karan has never been impressive really.
I remember his 3rd place podium in 2015.
He nearly took out Ed Carpenter several times when he was driving erratically. Ed basically told him that he'd kill someone driving like that, low and behold Pocono 2015 happens.
Now Karam is not responsible, but if his driving tendencies had been a bit more tamed he may not have crashed there.

Wilson's accident was unfortunate and no proposed head protection could have saved him given it struck the top of his helmet. We just have to hope it never happens again.

He is an insecurity singularity.
He's black which already makes him have and inferiority complex by default since he's in a traditionally white sport, this manifests itself by complaining about racism sometimes.
He has made it to F1, he's the best thereore he doesn't have to question whether he's actually better than drivers who weren't aboe to make it, using circular logic he's the best because he is.
He has had plenty of teammates do better than him in the last few years and that bothers the SHIT out of him.
He has created this party boy image for himself and has maybe realized that it's not making him happy anymore, but he's too proud to admit it.

The facade of Lewis Hamilton.

It's like Alonso said in his press conference in Alabama, many guys in the F1 paddock can't exist without being negative. Hamilton is probably perturbed that Alonso is demonstrating his skill by picking up a different style of single seater racing so easily, so in Ham's mind the best way to handle this is to mock Indy racing.

Good lord m8, what do you want?
It's lower drag to have the front wing elements that high. If F1 allowed wing elements to go that high, you can bet teams would take advantage.

The tires are extremely draggy, in fact they are the most draggy part of the cars. LMP1 cars have the best DF to Drag Coefficient, the only reason they're not faster than F1 and Indy is that they don't have the power to weight ratio.

What the car really needs is a shorter nose.

Worth noting, re- Hamilton's comments.
Do you think we would have been supportive of AJ Foyt if he said that "them sports car drivers are terrible, we showed up to Le Mans and smoked all of them."
I doubt it, I know I certainly wouldn't have and I believe AJ is arguably the greatest driver to ever live.
I wouldn't support it mostly because it's not true that the sports car drivers were lacking in talent. AJ is just hugely talented and the Ford GT was undeniably the best car at the time.

With the exception of 2008, Lewis Hamilton has won his championships in a car that was undeniably the best car on the grid and the only competition he tended to have was his teammates.
Beginning after 2008 was Lewis' transformation into an arrogant prick.

Fernando's a good guy seeking to become a driver among drivers, have to respect him for putting his reputation to the test.
Hell, he blends right in with the Indycar paddock.

I hate Mclaren but it was good to see Nando having a laugh at the driver's meeting this morning at the track.

Nice to see Dario happy - before Ashley and Chip sucked the life out of him.

RIP Dan.

Twas the night before Indy
And all ’round the track
Not an engine was purring
Not even a cat
The race suits were hung
By the helmets with care
In hopes that St. Marmon
Soon would be there
The drivers were resting
All snug in their beds
While visions of milk bottles
Danced in their heads
The Dallaras sat silent
Awaiting command
While green, white and checkered flags
Stood in their stand

When out on the bricks
I heard such a clatter
I headed down pit lane
To see what’s the matter
In Gasoline Alley
I saw such a sight
’twas the old Marmon Wasp
Like a ghost in the night
With it’s little old driver
His hair turning grey
I knew in a moment
It must be St. Ray
Like Dan Gurney Eagles
The other cars came
He whistled and shouted
And called them by name
Now Offy! Now Novi!
Now Hall’s Chaparral!
Lolas and Marches
McLarens and all!
To the top of the grid
Along the pit wall
Drive away! Drive away!
Drive away all!

And then on a microphone
I heard in the night
A golden-voiced angel
Who brings such delight
The Ghost of Tom Carnegie
With a smile on his face:
“500 miles to all
And to all a good race!”

There is no greater joy in my life than walking into Indy on Saturday while the historic cars are running laps in the morning.

The sound of 33 cars starting a race in the 60's must been glorious.

Hamilton's comments have nothing to do with Indycar, it's all about Fernando.

>Alonso is obsessed with his legacy to the point his is unironically involved with an "Alonso museum"
>considered an amazing driver
>beats Schumacher
>going to be GOAT, right?
>gets BTFO by Hamilton
>gets BTFO by Vettel
>fails at bringing Ferrari back to greatness
>fails at bring McLaren-Honda back to greatness
>needs another way to prove he's GOAT
>"imma do the Indy500 and win the triple crown"
>Hamilton: "lol Indy500 is shit, if you win it means nothing"

It's no different than Fernando telling anyone who would listen about how amazing Adrian Newey was when Vettel was beating him.
In their minds, when it comes to reputation, why try to climb above your rivals when you can just take the easy way out and try to push them below you?
