It's hard to be consistent when you play in a midfield as unbalanced as Real's was during that time. He either had a midfield partner like Gravesen or Guti, or was put out on the left. If he had a stable, cohesive 3 man midfield to play in like modern Barca and Real have he would have shone a lot more often.
