It's not something I can be bothered getting into but it's stupid to say there's no difference between watching names and no names. But that's exactly my point. They make themselves known by being good. A good performance means you pay attention. A good performance means moving higher in the rankings. A good performance does increase attention.
Consistently good performances means they're a quality MMA fighter, so they're fights are likely going to be on a higher technical level than some no name or unranked.

I don't watch some smaller promotions with the same attentiveness I watch the UFC, because the UFC is largely seen as the A-League where people want to break into. The calibre of fighters is generally better. When Jon Jones started out as 0-0, he wasn't the fighter he was when he started making a name for himself. His fights weren't as technically sound.

The name came from how good he was.

The thing about even those fighters is if they consistently win they're going to make a name for themselves anyway, so if they're good it's going to happen and you'll take notice. They'll become a name. Perry isn't the most technically sound fighter, it's actually his personality that has people interested in him so you're sort of saying the same point as me in that names and marketability do matter, just for different reasons

Oh of course. Otherwise no one would sit and watch prelims, or any promotion that isn't the UFC.

But there's a lot to be said about marketability and rankings. They stem from good performances, to dismiss them completely and just view all fights as the same is wrong too. Woodley/Tyron wasn't a great fight, but technically both of them are better MMA fighters tahn Reyes/Kim which is what makes their fight, on paper at least, more exciting and why I'd be more interested in their fight.
It's why people buy into marketability and why it matters. I can't say I enjoy the prelims the same as I do the main card, so I do consider name power and marketability significant in the sense that those things often stem from success in the Octagon.
