In general the West looks much better than the East right now. The Western final series is being played at a level that the Eastern final isn't.

I think the general consensus in r/hockey is that the NHL has no idea how to properly market itself, particularly compared to the other major sports leagues. Most nonsports fans have heard of Lebron James or Tom Brady. The same can't be said about the NHL's best player, Sidney Crosby.

Despite the most predictable playoffs in recent memory, with an average margin of victory of 12.9 points, the NBA is still dominating ratings. Meanwhile, NBC (who has exclusive rights to the entire playoffs), puts most of the playoffs on NBCSN instead of NBC itself. ESPN, in a recent shake-up, has decided the covering the NHL is not worth the money.

Now, I understand why there are barriers to hockey's popularity (cost being the main one) and I don't expect them to reach NFL level popularity or even surpass the NBA, but I honestly think that they can do a better job than what they've done.

So how would you fix the NHL's popularity problems? These can be changes to how it markets itself, it's negotiating (two lockouts since the turn of the century probably haven't helped), or changes to the game itself (. Basically, if you were hired by the NHL and told to make the game more popular, what would you do? You can choose whether you start from scratch (all existing TV, marketing contracts are null and void), or work with the existing system (I believe the current NBC contract runs through 2021).
