pit speeding is usually on the engineers for fucking up the limiter and rpm gauge unless Newgarden blatantly blew by the pit entry above the limit, which I don't recall seeing on the broadcast.

Notice that Josef began lifting his helmet well before the accident was over.
At speeds of 200+ mph, slowing down a great deal to say 60mph feels like you've stopped moving.

Qualifying at Indy is some of the most miserable laps a driver ever has to run.
The cars are trimmed out(low Downforce) to such a degree that it is unstable around every corner and you have to go around the track 4 times.
Today is "fast" Friday, no one will be running race setup today because the engine is set at a higher boost pressure, from 1.3 Bar to 1.4 Bar.

I'm gonna be watching /indy/ for the first time ever when qualifying's on.

Can someone gimme a quick rundown on indycar qualifying.

Tomorrow they will have 4 lap runs and get an average speed which determines their grid position. At the end of the day, the fastest 9 cars are locked into the top 9 spots and on Sunday they each get 1 run on Sunday to decide the order of the top 9 cars. All the slower cars will also run on Sunday, but even if they run faster than the top 9 the highest they can start is 10th.

On Saturday and IIRC for the slower cars on Sunday as well, drivers have the option of deleting their old time to make a 2nd or 3rd run. If they run slower they are stuck woth the slower time and if they run faster they get bumped up the grid.

Qualifying procedures are different depending on the track. For road courses qualifying procedures are similar to what you are presumably used to in f1 with timed Q1, Q2, Q3 etc. For ovals it usually based on a 2 lap average speed where each driver only gets one chance. The Indianapolis 500 has its own set of different procedures. Positions are measured in 4 lap average speed and final positions are determined over two days. Basically the first day determines the qualifying order for the second day (fastest time gets to qualify last) which has two rounds (top 9 advancing to the 2nd round) and determines the final starting order for the race which ultimately doesn't matter in the end because they start 3x3 and race is 500 miles long, but winning the pole is kind of prestegious, people still introduce the leaf as 2016 indianapolis 500 pole sitter

it isn't as important as f1. Passing is common and with some strategy you can move up from to the front from far back, but you still want to qualify well as it shows you have a good car and can avoid being around shitters that might crash you.

That year was such a shitshow too. The series had just split and all the big name teams and drivers went to CART and weren't there. The teams that did stay in IRL were mostly using old chassis they purchased from teams that left for CART. Only one previous winner was in the field and 17 of the 33 drivers were rookies. The polesitter was killed in practice a few days later. The actual race was incredibly sloppy by Indy standards and most of the excitement came from seeing who would embarrass themselves next.

That year seriously damaged the Indy 500's prestige and it wouldn't begin to recover until teams like Penske and Ganassi switched over full-time. In the US at least we're probably only just to the point where it's bigger than the Daytona 500 again and even that's still debatable.

Start position really does not matter at all, considering how easy it is to pass nowadays. For example in 2015 JPM had a minor accident and restarted the race 33rd after a yellow flag, yet won the race. The importance of quali is that it is the first time we really see who has the fastest car.
