There are a large variety of reasons for this phenomenon.

1) Because fans and players are all, collectively, stupid enough to invest emotion in a meaningless system of bread and circus where by definition only a rather small percentage - nowadays only about 3-4% - win the only thing that anyone actually cares about, which is the annual championship. Thus, on an annual basis, 97% of society have to be losers. If sports are meant as an escape from real life, then the simple numbers I've just dropped are instead an all-too-familiar reminder of how shitty real life actually is. Thus sports do not actually fulfill the escapist function that they are supposed to have, most of the time.

2) One hears of Olympic villages, where 13/10 people all fuck like rabbits for a few days. Unfortunately, a highly contagious form of STD which brings on necrotizing fasciitis in its sufferers has not hit such an orgy. Think how wonderful it would be to know that these perfect people with these perfect bodies are all now dying horribly and becoming quite ugly and weak at the height of their powers, and exactly due to their participation in same orgy. Taking them all down a peg.

3) Because the organization of sport itself is a hypocrisy at every level. Who actually plays the sports? Young, athletically gifted men, negroes, and so on. Who organizes and profits best from sport? Old fat ugly unthletic jews, and old fat ugly unathletic men in general.

4) Because the single most popular sport in the world, soccer, is far and away the stupidest and least interesting of all sports. It is regrettable what this state of affairs has to say about humanity in general.

Because you're relying on sports vicariously for validation. If your team wins then you feel good and if they lose then you feel bad. You set a goal to have your team win the game, except you're not even in control of the outcome (lack of control is also why people are more afraid of flying than driving even though it's statistically safer). When your team doesn't win the game, you don't achieve your goal. Unachieved goals create stress.
