But why not make them V8s since FOM seem to actively be targeting "noise" as one of their criteria? Yes getting rid of the MGU-H will improve the noise, but still, they should bring back V8s 2bh famalam

Glock was on slicks and Hamilton passed him with ease on the wet track on intermediates. The strategy to stay on slicks moved him way up in position and he finished higher up than if he had also pitted. If he wanted Hamilton to win he would have just pitted as well so that Hamilton was still ahead of him. Glock had the same final lap time as his team mate on the same strategy indicating he didn't slow.
Glock literally didn't have a say in if Hamilton passed him or not on way quicker inters 2bh.

@75940038
No (You) since you didn't even read the read my post beyond the first line. I'll break it down nice and simply for you so it permeates your skull and sticks in your grey matter instead of going straight out of your ears.

V8 engines are at a technological dead end. The manufacturers are, slowly but surely, abandoning them. Except the inbred luxury supercar market who only car about POWERRRRRRR because they're philistines. They take up more space than a V6. They're heavier than a V6. They're less efficient than a V6. They're not inherently noiser than a V6. They have feeble torque bands. They're becoming less and less relevant to road cars.

If F1 forcibly brings back V8s, Mercedes, Honda and Renault will pull out because of the above reasons, and the sport will be left with just Ferrari unless Cosworth can be convinced to rejoin. Maybe BMW will make a return, as they have a corporate philosophy of never making a V6 engine, but that's about as likely as McLaren-Honda ever winning a race.

Tell that to McLaren - every one of their cars has a twin-turbo V8 in it
Tell that to Ferrari - the 488 has a twin-turbo V8 in it
Tell that to Porsche - the 918 has a V8 in it (naturally aspirated in that case)

Jesus if you're going to come up with an argument at least make it one that isn't so easily debunked.

>they're not inherently noisier than a V6
How? More cylinders = more vibrations = more sound.
Do you think that a single cylinder moped engine is just as loud as a V12 then?

>forcibly
I'm not saying forcibly mate, I just don't accept your arguments that the manufacturers hate them as much as you think they do - especially since they literally all use V8s in their road cars.

>he doesn't like how the V8s sounded

>b-b-b-but those cars are a couple years old now!

Has a single Ferrari ever used a V6? I mean fucking seriously.

Oh yeah and the Merc AMG GT, their latest flagship halo car, uses a twin-turbo V8.

But yeah, the V8 is totally dead bro!

Give you Ferrari but they have pretty much always asked for more cylinders but that's in the luxury car category.

>implied all the Engine suppliers use and want V8's
Mercedes wanted less cylinders than we currently have, they are firmly on the less side of the fence. So are Renault and Honda 2bh, given all their number of cars over 4 cylinders. The only reason we have V6's is because Ferrari threatened to leave.

The V8's did sound pretty bad lad

Pretty much every racing series is moving away from 8 or larger cylinder engines other than MUH POWER American series.
V8's are a thing of the past at this point 2bh, more and more cars are coming out with smaller cheaper engines and are competitive vs the V8's
>>
>>75940618
>Mercedes wanted less cylinders than we currently have
Source? I thought all the manufacturers objected to FOM's I4 plans, they wanted something bigger for the spectacle.

>The only reason we have V6's is because Ferrari threatened to leave.
I've just been reading any article I can find about it and they all say "the manufacturers" didn't like the idea of I4s, not just Ferrari

>Hmmmm V8's aren't dead though, not like Supercars are moving away from
Yeah that must be why all these cars, all released in the last couple of years, all use them:
McLaren 720
Ferrari 488
Mercedes AMG GT
McLaren P1
Porsche 918

Also you're saying "why would Renault and Honda want lots of cylinders when their cars don't have big engines". Well then surely you could say that about the V10 era? Why were they in the sport then, if - by your logic - they only have a desire to build engines of the exact configuration that they're going to put into their road cars?

Your logic there doesn't make sense. Neither of those companies were running V10s in their road cars at the time, as far as I'm aware.

The FIA have stated that one of their explicit goals for the new engines is that they be "noisier". The teams want that too. Mercedes have said they want that. And the FIA want "to maintain high power levels", and "to allow drivers to drive harder at all times". So why the hell wouldn't they consider V8s? They are explicitly looking for more noise, and yes getting rid of the MGU-H will do that to an extent, but why not whack on some cylinders too? It seems ludicrous to me that they wouldn't even consider it.

Why would they want to eat through fuel? They're trying to save fuel mate.

Or are you talking about 2020? Are you saying they should increase the boost on the turbo and use more fuel to make the engine louder and more powerful to increase the spectacle 'n' shiet? Instead of higher displacement / more silindars as a solution to those problems?

Also can I ask, are you genuinely Bahamian? Are you black for one thing?

I know theyre trying to save fuel but I'm asking if these turbos produce enough boost to the point where the ECU (or whatever) has to shove some more fuel in those silindars to keep the poor engine from running to hot and detonating and I'm wondering if this in turn makes their fuel efficiency the same or only very slightly better than a higher displacement/ayt silindar engine

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you again, but why would they turn up the boost that far? The whole point of the turbo is for fuel efficiency. They're just forcing in a bit more air with the fuel for a bigger bang. They're not forcing in SO much air that the mixture is too lean, like you describe. Why would they do that?

The current engines are definitely more efficient than the higher displacement, more cylindered engines of before.

As I say maybe I'm misunderstanding you. I am a noob on mechanics by the way, I don't really know what I'm talking about, beyond a rudimentary understanding.

You must remember that for years, F1 was the main "R&D dept" for street cars. We use many things coming from there, such as ABS brakes, honeycomb reinforced structures, active suspension system, sequential shifting and many other things. The latest big dev F1 gave to street cars was KERS, which are used on eletric and hybrid cars to reduce battery comsumption and giving an extra boost by using braking energy.

>Current drivers you hate

Williams. Red Bull are okay. Renault are cool, I hope they do a bit better. Sauber are cool too, I want them to do better. I guess I like seeing any of the underdog teams pull of some good results, Force India and Toro Rosso and Haas as well.
>Current teams you hate

I mean sequential gearboxes are used in lots of other racing too, did they definitely come from F1?
And with KERS - well hybrid cars, which obviously use a battery for energy, predated F1 using KERS, did they not? The Prius came out in the mid-2000s.

Yes. The 246 exists. Also one of the most beautiful cars in existence.
>>
>>75942278
>a Dino from 40 years ago is one of the only Ferraris to use a V6
That's exactly my point.

Who knows maybe they will stick with V6s in 2020, but since they are talking about noise and power, why wouldn't they consider a V8? And the arguments that the V8 is dead are absolutely ludicrous to me. If anything the V8 is having a fucking renaissance, since lots of supercars are now using them. These are cars that might have had V10s or V12s in years past. Although the V12 is far from dead also, look at the LaFerrari, the Aston Martin DB11, the new Ferrari 812. Sure, I don't expect to see V12s back in F1 anytime soon (unfortunately), but they still exist and are still being put in new cars. So I just don't buy this argument that certain engine configurations are "dying out", it just sounds like utter bullshit.

Speaking of the DB11, they're going to release a cheaper version of that with a Mercedes twin-turbo V8 in it. Hey look, it's yet another modern supercar with a V8! So much for the death of the V8 I guess!

Also to bolster my V8 argument against the naysayers. Twin-turbo V8s especially seem to be all the rage right now. McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes are all using them in their cars. Ferrari switched from using naturally aspirated V8s for fucking ages in their "baby" / mass market line - 458, F430, 360, F355, 348, 328 - having put a twin-turbo V8 in the 488. In fact I think it's the first time that the main version of their "baby" car has been turbocharged.

>>75943115
>the V6's would scream if they were naturally aspirated
Not as much as a V8 would though.

I just think V6s are a bit wimpy for F1, and I think that's exactly what the FIA and the teams want to solve - they have heard the message loud and clear that fans are bit uninspired by the current formula. Toto has talked in the past about the importance of putting on a good show. And like I say, the FIA have explicitly said that noise is one of their objectives in the new engine (lower cost and increased simplicity being other ones).
>>
>3 of the current F1 engine suppliers hardly have a car over 6 Cylinders
>the manufacturer looking to join hardly has a car over 6 cylinders
>Ferrari love more cylinders
>Ferrari will have their way and we will move to backwards to V8's because some British autist can't see that in racing almost every series is moving towards smaller less cylinder engines

You have to go back to 2015 for LMP1 to have a V8 and that's only 1 out of 6 cars
The year before that had 2 of 6
The year before that had 3 of 4

But no the V8 isn't dying out.

Supercars has its first non V8 entries next year, the first year they are available teams are jumping to smaller engines, funny that. But no the V8 isn't dying because expensive niche supercars still have more cylinders.

As long as Americans are fat, they'll need V8 torque to get around.

So the Indy 500 is *after* Monaco? I guess that makes sense because of timezones. In which case then yes I'll watch some of it probably to see how Alonso's doing, but I'm not going to miss Monaco.

You going to watch Monaco? You better do. Else I won't watch your shitty race.

>3 of the current F1 engine suppliers hardly have a car over 6 Cylinders
Both Mercedes and Ferrari have twin-turbo V8s in some of their flagship vehicles. Why are you trying to talk about a subject that you clearly know nothing about?

And hang on mate, is there a single Renault car that even has a 6 cylinder engine? And is there a single Honda apart from the NSX? So by your logic they should all be running inline 4s shouldn't they? And by your logic why did Renault and Honda get involved in the V10 era since I'm pretty sure neither of them produced cars with V10s in them at that point? Do you realise how stupid you sound?

>some faggy racing series have some faggy eco bullshit dickwaving engines where the dickwave about eking out fuel efficiency, therefore F1 is going to follow suit, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE FIA HAVE EXPLICITLY SAID THAT CHEAPER, NOISIER, SIMPLER ENGINES ARE THEIR OBJECTIVE FOR THE NEW FORMULA
Why the fuck am I even talking to an absolute retard?

>>75943506
>he keeps banging on about road relevancy and yet cannot answer my simple question of why Renault and Honda got involved in F1 during the V10 era when they did not produce cars with V10 engines at that time
WOW IT'S ALMOST AS IF ROAD RELEVANCY EXTENDS TO MORE THAN JUST THE EXACT SAME ENGINE CONFIGURATION AS WHAT YOU USE IN YOUR ROAD CARS, HUH

WOW IT'S ALMOST AS IF F1 IS A MARKETING OPPORTUNITY AS MUCH AS IT IS A CHANCE TO DEVELOP NEW ENGINE TECHNOLOGIES

I think that's a very valid argument for what will happen. And you just called these great racing series faggy, great defence lad.

>road relevancy shit all together because you talked about it twice even though it doesn't matter or something, or it does matter now but didn't before and doesn't if someone else mentions it
I'm just wondering why you changed your tune from it isn't to it is to it isn't and then back again and again lad.
When you point out cars exist with more cylinders meaning that F1 should do the same, why I can't point out that the actual engine suppliers don't have more cylinders? You haven't actually addressed that other than "this one manufacturer has 1 or 2 cars in its small niche luxury range with more cylinders" Another tick on the "one of us is retarded" box for you there mate.

>raging incoherent all caps
Another tick on the "one of us is retarded" box for you there mate.

>F1 is going to do exactly the same as what other racing series are going to do
>despite the fact that the FIA have explicitly stated that they want LOUDER, CHEAPER, SIMPLER engines for 2020
You still are completely ignoring the points that I am giving you, presumably because you lack the intellectual capacity to engage with them?

>I'm just wondering why you changed your tune from it isn't to it is to it isn't and then back again and again lad.
Nah, that's exactly what you're doing, and you seem to be too clinically retarded to recognise it.

>F1 won't use twin-turbo V8s just because expensive cars do (and because two of the four current engine manufacturers make road cars with twin-turbo V8s in them)! That's ridiculous!
>Oh, but Renault and Honda will DEFINITELY only agree to a formula that coincides with what is going on in their road cars! Despite that fact that Renault don't even make a car with a V6 in it right now! Despite the fact that Renault and Honda didn't make V10 cars when they both participated in F1 back in the 2000s!

Make up your mind! That's probably expecting too much of your two brain cells though.

I don't think I've ever talked to a stupider person on this messageboard, and that's saying something.
>>
>>75944173
I'm assuming "70-80s style" has nothing to do with sponsors and more to do with the paint style, duh.
>>
>>75944415
car liveries are based on the sponsors.

so are the helmets.

yeah there's a little room for the driver to be a special snowflake but they are contractually obligated to have that Monster logo (or in the past, Marlboro logo) on their helmet.
>>
>>75944348
>FIA
>They have total say in what happens to the engine regs
You now remember what you said slightly earlier about how the FIA wanted I4 engines introduced in 2013, and how we ended up with V6's in 2014.
Plus I have only seen Brawn say he wants that just like how he wants DRS removed, so we will have to wait to see if there is any substance behind Brawn's words. I haven't seen any backing behind it from anyone other than the drivers, but they have zero say in the way the Formula develops. So I can't really say much here because I don't sniff around for every comment from FIA on things that might not happen (see HALO).

>No you are
All I have said is that Ferrari is the only supplier that really has many 6+ cylinder cars, everyone else doesn't actually have any or doesn't have many. You are the one banging on about V12's meaning F1 should have more cylinders then raging when someone points out that's only Ferrari who should be less than 1/4th of the say of the manufacturers (we know this isn't reality though).

>make up your mind
I have said the same thing from the start lad, just like how I said it again just above. If you want to talk about V8 vs non V8 vote, you have Ferrari in favour of V8, Mercedes in the middle (they would probably vote for change to get an advantage with their great team at developing shit), then Honda, Renault and Audi (if they follow through with joining they have more experience in racing with V6).
It's not really stacked in V8's favor at all, it's not even likely to split 50-50 either.
If you want to talk about what we don't know much about because other than Ferrari the suppliers haven't been vocal your getting into theory territory.
In theory Renault and Honda would want the engines to stay more or less the same, they are behind and catching up in power, why would they risk falling well behind again? If they do want change why would they want engines that aren't in the area they have an advantage in?

Ericsson was mentally destroyed after Spain, he had the race of his career but still couldn't score points. He's finished.

>Miss Q2 and get outqualified your teammate by LITERALLY 0.005 seconds
>Have an ok start but have to step on the brakes in turn 2 because a finn and a toothpaste suddenly reenter the track right in front of you
>Fight back, overtake Vandoorne and Palmer
>Get stuck behind a slow as fuck Lance Stroll in a 0 drag Mercedes powered Williams
>Only overtaking area is at the end of the straight, you have a 2016 engine
>Manage to get past Stroll but now your tires are fucked
>Team puts you on plan B strategy, your teammate still on the faster one stopper
>Pit LITERALLY the lap before Vandoorne brings out the VSC
>This allows Stroll to pit under VSC and get back in front of you again
>End the race having overtaken Stroll twice, both McLarens and Palmer.
Finish just out of the points, meanwhile everything fell into place for your teammate

Try reading the post again, Ericsson couldn't make a one stopper work because his tyres got worn out from overtaking cars.
Wehrlein had a mega lap one and could hold position and nurse his tires for most of the race. Now that's not me trying to take anything away from Pascal, he had a great race and was better than Ericsson.

>The car on Hamilton's Stamp

JUST
>>
Hamilton's out-lap on his fresh soft tyres was crucial in turning the tide against Ferrari and he delivered with truly awesome times in the middle sector (30.792s) and final sector (28.367). To put those figures in perspective, they were on the sort of pace that would have secured a place in Q3 during qualifying on Saturday despite Hamilton's car being laden with half a tank of fuel for the rest of the race.

Unsurprisingly, the two sector times were still the fastest of the race when the chequered flag fell 30 laps later and were nearly over a second quicker than the sector times from Hamilton's official fastest lap two laps from the end. If they'd been combined with a first sector that didn't involve exiting the pit lane, Hamilton's theoretical fastest race lap would have been in the high 1:21s -- a genuinely brilliant lap time for a car with that fuel load and one that would have been quick enough to secure pole position at last year's Spanish Grand Prix.

>All I have said is that Ferrari is the only supplier that really has many 6+ cylinder cars
That's false because Mercedes does as well, in the current models of all these cars:

AMG GT
S Class
SLK
GLE
SL

Maybe some more but those are the ones I could find.

Look we can resolve this very easily - can you give your source which shows that the manufacturers definitely want smaller engines?
>>
>>75944787
>>75949971
Oh by the way sorry, those Merc cars I mentioned all have V8s in them.

There are other Mercs that have V6s too (and you said 6+ cylinders). E.g. I think the C-Class can be bought with a V6 but not a V8 - ALTHOUGH if you get the AMG version then you CAN have a V8.

So yeah, basically it's very clear that Mercedes absolutely DO use V8s VERY HEAVILY throughout their product line.

Literally every Mercedes that's not based on the A-class or C-class (with the exception of the c class itself) is available with 8 or more cylinders. Why are we even having this discussion, once electric cars are the norm F1 will go back to massive petrol engines without any electric infetterance.

Well there you go, that basically proves my point.

>Why are we even having this discussion, once electric cars are the norm F1 will go back to massive petrol engines without any electric infetterance.
Because the Kiwi seems certain that F1 engines are going to either stay as a V6 or get smaller in the 2020 formula.

They *could* stay as a V6, but all I'm saying is that why wouldn't they at least consider a turbocharged, hybrid V8?

The FIA and teams keep saying they want more noise, and they feel the current formula hasn't engaged fans.

Who knows what they will do, but I reckon a V8 will at least be a talking point in their discussions.

It's not even pronounced like that, if you listen to Sebastian saying it he will say "VETT-el"

Although really, in German, the "V" is more like an "F". So it's really "FETT-el".

Because in German they use "W" for the "V" sound. E.g. Württemberg. Or Wurst. Or Wankel. Or Wunderbar.

He's running in traffic today, yellow just now for track inspection.
Teams are doing short stints to get the race balance/set up on the car correct. It's a bit warmer today than yesterday so what worked then may not work today.

Race sims will probably happen throughout the week, basically teams will fill the car full of fuel, put on new tires, and run them until they crap out. Kid of at the mercy of how many cars are on the circuit though.

Qualifying practice will likely not happen until Fast Friday when the boost is turned up a bit and the drivers have 10% more HP.

Penske's Will Power(Aussie) is playing with an asymmetrical setup.
The pod on the driver's right side is Chevrolet's qualifying low drag pod, the left side is the normal high downforce pod.

yes, they use asymmetrical suspension and I think they still stagger the tires to lessen the amount of speed lost in corners. This is why you might see them slowly drift left on the straightaway and need to turn right before entering the next turn

Yeah, I mean all the suspension and camber setups are asymmetrical which is why the drivers compensate on the straightaways by turning the steering wheel right.
Penske plays with that aero setup every year. I don't think they've ever raced with it though for whatever reason. Speed might not be as beneficial as the extra DF at the cost of drag.

Question yank. Apart from Alonso, has there ever been another rookie at the Indy 500 before who has never done an IndyCar race nor raced on an oval before?

People are comparing to Alonso to Rossi, but Rossi had done the full IndyCar season up until the Indy 500, including the oval of Phoenix (for all intents and purposes it's an oval).

You get to think of creative solutions around problems.
Moving heavy objects was fucking difficult until the wheel was invented as a solution.
Humanity is built around limitations and finding ways around them.

We see the same things in music, the limitations on instruments allow for composers to seek an alternative way to do something(or they invent a new instrument without that limitation)
We certainly see the same things in motorsport. A team finds a loophole and exploits it to great effect. This exploit may not have been thought of without the regulations since you could hace easily just gone faster by producing more DF and HP.

On the other hand, using old cameras for the sake of old cameras is stupid. Cameras were limited then and people found better ways around them.
Use a modern camera folks.

it's literally impossible to make an all-electric race car to rival the performance of a current F1 car

Sure it is. They just have to pit for a new battery trailer every 5 laps.

Brawn is cancelling it because the engines being cheaper themselves is outweighed by the massive research, development and production costs changing engine regulations yet again would bring.

same on ovals, but in practice, where people are getting varying levels of slipstream, it isn't very meaningful to compare.

I feel like not having Bernie "literally a gangster/mafioso" Ecclestone is gonna hurt the position of F1. He brought down Group C because they threatened his product. What will the Americans do when something similar or something actually dangerous might happen?

Source?

Every interview of Brawn I had seen, he is saying "we need to find a new solution for F1, something that is good for the fans and the teams, we know people haven't been enthused by the current formula"

Anyway we know that they're going to change the formula, the only question is how much.

it's simple, they are going for the burger route.
One chassis, less electronics, memecedes engines, worse tyres and so on. Also they'll make more kids cry
>>
>>75954335
Brawn also said he wants spec parts like wings and engines. Which will never happen.

Brawn is just shitting it up with what thought happens to cross his mind when being interviewed.

anyway you're right, Bernie was a conservative asshole, autistic enough to keep F1 an elitist sport

Some people seem to be forgetting to take a salt mine pinch of salt with anything he says
>>

I've not heard him say that but okay.

But anyway the article I linked isn't just the musings of Ross Brawn. It's about a meeting between the FIA, current manufacturers, and potential manufacturers. And they agreed on "cheaper" and "noisier" engines.

Anyway the author of this article gives his reasons why he thinks the next formula will be a twin-turbo V6, ditching the MGU-H, and beefing up the MGU-K. So it will be louder (without the MGU-H), more powerful, and simpler - because the MGU-H is the most complicated part of the current engine.
